We celebrated the feast day of Mary McKillop and on Friday, the Assumption of Mary. In today’s gospel Jesus affirms the Canaanite woman for her faith. However with these woman and today’s readings there is a more profound emphasis on acceptance and inclusion of those who are disenfranchised. Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mary McKillop are known and loved for these qualities. The gospels tell us of Mary reaching out to others – Cana, Elizabeth, and of course her acceptance of God’s invitation to be the mother of His Son. Mary McKillop has been recognised with Sainthood for her vision, commitment and outreach to Australia’s poor and isolated. In the gospel the Canaanite woman surprisingly challenges Jesus’ reluctance and achieves a change from Jesus – he does help and heal her daughter. The reading from Isaiah speaks of ‘foreigners who have attached themselves to the Lord’ and beautifully proclaims acceptance and inclusion through - the Lord’s house is a ‘house of prayer for all people’. Paul continues from last week his deep sadness that the Jews continue to reject the gift of salvation offered through Jesus. Whilst Paul is happy in his role of Apostle of the pagans, he sees the blindness and rejection (‘disobedience’ in Paul’s words) by the Jews as excluding themselves from the grace and salvation given through Jesus. There is a thread of hopefulness in Paul’s words – that some of the Jews will see the faith of others and open their hearts to God’s mercy. This week we are challenged to be people of faith and to heed the words of Isaiah: Have a care for justice, act with integrity, for soon my salvation will come.
