Money Counters provide a valued
service to our parish every week. Thank
you!

Get
Together Wednesday, February 11,
11am-1:30pm at
the Southside
Neighborhood Center, 1300 Sixth St.
S. Our guests will be members of the Building Our
Future Together Commission. They will present the
video seen at the Jan. 10th parish meeting. They
will also be interested in your input on what you see
will be needed in a facility if we remodel the existing
building or build new.
Some people complain because God put
thorns on roses, while others praise Him
for putting roses among thorns.
Old Palms Once again this year we will collect
last year’s palms in the box on the ushers table in
the gathering space of church.
February 18th, Ash Wednesday
Masses will be 7:30 am, 12
Noon, and 7:00 pm.
Funeral Servers An additional ministry to the
parish that does not get scheduled is funeral
servers. We are looking for adults who would be
available during the week on short notice to serve
at funerals. If this is a ministry you would be
interested in, please contact Allie in the parish
office at 788-5483 ext. 2.
Old Hymnals for Free The old church hymnals
are free for anyone to keep for personal use. They
will be available in the servers' sacristy (to the left of
the altar) through the weekend of Feb. 21-22. Those
dedicated in the memory of a loved one
have been alphabetized. There are also
plenty of hymnals in good condition that
were dedicated by parish organizations.
These are on a separate table for "General Use"
and are free for anyone to take. These hymnals still
have value because they include Scripture readings
for every Sunday and holy day.
Building Our Future Together
The full
Commission created three work groups and one of
them is the Facilities Committee. This Committee
met twice in recent weeks. A major goal is preparing
a full and reliable analysis of the school building.
There are a lot of talents and abilities among the
Committee members but due to the question about
structural integrity of the school building it was felt it
would be worthwhile seeking bids from some
outside experts for the entire Commission to
consider. Whatever decision is made about the
school building, the Commission, the parish, and the
pastor need to be confident that it is the right
decision.
It was the consensus of the Facilities Committee
to engage outside expertise - architect and
engineering - for a full and reliable analysis. The
Facilities Committee felt it could assist or
supplement that work with our internal abilities and
the Committee was confident in evaluating the
proposals that would be submitted.
The goal of this “Study Phase” would consider
what would need to be done if the school building
(or some part of it) were to be rehabilitated:
1. Feasibility
2. Cost effectiveness
3. Some preliminary ideas to accomplish it
A cost and scope request for bids was sent out
to four architectural firms requesting their proposals
for the Facilities Committee’s review prior to the
next full Commission meeting on February 24.
Please note this proposed engagement is NOT
for any renovation or construction - only for a Study
Phase of the current structural condition of the
school building. If the Commission moves forward
with this Study Phase, the architect chosen would
NOT automatically be the firm that would be chosen
to actually do the renderings for a renovation or new
construction or combination of renovation/new
construction.
Year of Consecrated Life
A
Memory Shared from Verda
Grabinski…
“Sister Rose Francis was my 8th
grade teacher at Holy Trinity
because of a special request I made. Before school
started in September, some of us kids helped get
the rooms ready. While I was helping Sr. Rose
Francis she told me that she was the new principal
for the school and she would be teaching the 8th
Mary Mother of the Church Parish
grade. I saw the student roster and which nuns
would be teaching each grade. My name was on the
list for a combined 7th and 8th grade classroom with
a nun I wasn’t excited to have. So, before I left
school that day, I asked Sr. Rose Francis if she
would please change me to her room. I was so
happy she said yes! She was such a good teacher.
“She would have us diagraming sentences
on the board and would send two of us to go up and
diagram the same one. One day she paired me up
with someone who was really good at it. We had
different results, but it turned out that I was correct! I
felt like the smartest person in the classroom at that
moment. It’s an interesting childhood memory tied to
Sr. Rose Francis.
“A few months before Sr. Rose Francis
passed away, a former classmate by the name of
Mary came to visit me in La Crosse. I told her I
would like to see Sr. Rose Francis. So we went to
see her. Mary took a picture of Sr. Rose Francis and
me. I have it in my living room today. I will always
remember her and how kind she was.”
As we celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life,
please consider sharing a story about a favorite
memory of a person from a religious community.

Stewardship Renewal
We recognize that all we possess comes
from God. We are God’s stewards – we have
been empowered to manage the abundant
gifts that we have received. As “good
stewards” it is our responsibility to share the
goods we receive from our generous and loving God.
This coming week you will be receiving a Stewardship
Renewal letter from Father Konopa. Within it there
will also be a schedule of Lenten activities and
devotions here at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish.
As we begin our Stewardship Renewal Appeal, let us
all take the time to recommit ourselves to the Lord by
reassessing our weekly schedules, our talents and
abilities, and our household budgets. Let us ask for the
Lord’s help in being good stewards. “Lord guide me by
Your wisdom; correct me with Your justice; comfort
me with Your mercy; and protect me with Your
power.”
