Fourth Sunday in Ordinary time
FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD IN THE TEMPLE - Monday, February 2nd
Mary and Joseph brought the Child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth as was prescribed for every
first-born male according to Jewish law. However, this child’s entry into the temple symbolized a dramatic change,
as he was destined from all eternity to be the cornerstone of a new temple made up of all who live in his Spirit.
Hence, this feast is always celebrated on February 2nd, forty days after Christmas. The feast is also known as
Candlemas Day since Simeon recognized the child as the “Glory of Israel” and the “light to the Gentiles” when presented in the temple. Hence, the use and blessing of candles! All are urged to come to Mass
and celebrate Christ the Lord as our true light; Mass that morning at 8:00 a.m. with the special blessing of
the candles and of those who bear them in their hands just as they bear Christ, the true light, in their hearts.
Some Scriptural Quotes That Pertain to God’s Light
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. God saw how good the light was.
Cod then separated the light from the darkness”.
Genesis 1:3-4
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
Upon those who lived in a land of gloom a light has shone”.
Isaiah 9:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?
The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?”
Psalms 27:1
“You are the light of the world; ,a city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Men do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a stand, where it gives light to all in the house.
In the same way your light must shine before others, that they may see goodness in your acts
and give praise to your heavenly Father”.
Matthew 5:14-16
“There was a time when you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Well then, live as children of light.
Light produces every kind of goodness and justice and truth”.
Ephesians 5:8-9
“Here is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you: that God is light; in him there is no darkness”.
1John 1:5
“I saw no temple in the city, the Lord God, the Almighty, it is temple-he and the Lamb.
The city had no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb.
The nations shall walk by its light, to it the kings of the earth will bring their treasures”.
Revelation 21:22-24
Lenten Day of Recollection - Saturday, February 21, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Lent usually begins in February, and this year almost in the smack middle of the month.
While many activities will be announced in coming weeks, one demands our attention now.
The annual Parish Day of Recollection will be given by Fr. Richard Fragomeni
from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago where he is professor of liturgy & preaching.
The topic will be: The Eucharist as a sharing in the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection.
After the Mass there will be a light breakfast and then a lunch served at noon.
Sign-up sheet is in the vestibule; hopefully a good number will sign up by Sun., Feb. 15th.
Men and women of all ages; invite non-parishioners also! Free will offering!
