NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY O WILLIAMSVILLE, NY THE PASTOR’S VIEWPOINT n Wednesday, January 15, 2014, the Diocese of Buffalo held a press conference at Notre Dame Academy in South Buffalo. This event concluded a process of consultation and assessment of all parochial and regional Catholic schools in our eight county diocese. In this bulletin in recent weeks, I shared with you this process and its many components. Mrs. Cherie Ansuini and I have attended numerous meetings in this process, providing all the requested data about Nativity School while listening to that same data being shared by six other schools in our cluster. Our cluster parishes are: St. Mary, Swormville; Christ the King, Snyder; St. Leo, Sweet Home; SS Peter & Paul, Williamsville; St. Benedict, Eggertsville, and St. Gregory the Great, Williamsville. Enrollment, finances, buildings, local demographics predicting future numbers of students available, state test scores, etc. were items considered in this process. The ideal model for a long-term viable Catholic school was one with an enrollment of around 400 students and the facilities to accommodate them, including the most recent technologies. Accessibility of such a school and quality of education were key assessment norms. The unavoidable truth of this process is the fact that the available number of children in Western New York is declining significantly. All government/public school districts are experiencing these facts. Families are smaller, incomes are stagnant, yet local school taxes rise to meet legacy costs and insurance needs. Catholic school tuitions are pricing potential students from our marketplace. Without assistance many families, while desiring a Catholic school education, simply cannot see themselves paying both government school taxes plus annually increasing PASTORAL tuition bills. A growing home-schooling SHARINGS community also impacts our Catholic schools. So, to keep costs contained, yet quality enhanced, fund raising, tuitions, and parish support must face challenges. With all this and more in mind, the Diocese of Buffalo is proceeding to revitalize its network of Catholic schools so as to provide quality options into the future. Nativity was informed at 11 AM on Wednesday, January 15, that we will remain in operation. However, our future remains precarious if we do not continue to grow our enrollment, contain our costs, and market ourselves to a larger constituency. I want to express my gratitude to Mrs. Ansuini, our faculty and staff, along with our Nativity Catholic school parents, all of whom have worked so very well, especially in these last few years, to make Nativity school such a desirable culture. Courtney Frish, our parish Advancement Director, has been invaluable in working with school parents to market our school. Only through these efforts do we continue this ministry. Only through even further efforts will we nurture and sustain it. None of us can, with certainty, predict the future. What we can do is to offer our best efforts for parents and children who treasure the gift of a quality Catholic School. I will now be challenging our Parish Council and our Finance Committee to respond to our circumstance with all the competencies they possess. Your own involvement through these consultative bodies is welcomed. AN AFTERNOON OF MUSIC FOR SENIORS YOUTH MINISTRY STOCKHOLDER MASS & DINNER Fr. John Leising will present a piano concert for Seniors (all ages are welcome) on Tuesday, January 28, at 2 PM in the East Wing of the church. The easiest access will be through the East entrance (parking lot side). The concert will last under an hour and a half. Some seats in the East Wing are padded, but most are not. You may want to bring a cushion. After introductory, prayerful music, Fr. John will present “A Taste of Light Classics,” “What They Were Singing When You Were Born,” “From the Piano Bench” and Eric Coates Piano Stylings. The Youth Ministry Stockholder’s Mass & Dinner which was originally scheduled for Friday, January 3, has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 8. Mass is at 5 PM, followed by dinner in the School Cafeteria at 6 PM. If you are a Youth Ministry Stockholder and are able to attend on this rescheduled date, please contact Stephanie Moss in the Family Faith Formation/Youth Ministry Office by Monday, February 3, via email (smoss@nativityharris hill.org) or phone (634-3130). NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY WILLIAMSVILLE, NY CATHOLICISM A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE FAITH THE FIRE OF HIS LOVE: PRAYER AND THE LIFE OF THE SPIRIT WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 7 TO 9 PM MSGR. PAA CENTER REFRESHMENTS AT 6:30 PM The Parish’s Adult Education Committee invites you to continue or join for the first time on an exciting journey based on the acclaimed documentary film series Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of Faith. This series explores not only what Catholics believe and why, but also displays in breathtaking visual detail the richness of the Church’s global culture. At each session in the series, you will be invited to view a video presentation of the Church’s essential teaching and travel with Father Robert Barron around the globe to see the Faith in the depth of its beliefs and practices. Through guided questions, reflection and sharing, you will be invited to explore more deeply our shared Catholic faith and its application to our daily lives. In the next session in the series on Jan. 22, Father Barron helps us to begin to comprehend the nature of prayer and the power of prayer. He invites us to “sit at the feet of a series of masters and try to catch some of their wisdom in regard to this mysterious and alluring act of raising the mind and the heart to God.” Father Barron maintains that we will understand this kind of communion only through careful attention to the lives of some of the people who have practiced it. So in this session, we will look at the prayer life and revelations of Thomas Merton, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Augustine and Aquinas. It should help all of us to better understand the nature and power of prayer in our life, and is sure to be a fascinating and moving session you won’t want to miss.
