The Magnificat ST. MARY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Crystal Lake, Illinois May, 2014 Vol.39, No.5 "Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us…” – from the Collect of the Third Sunday of Advent A Joyful Eastertide to the St. Mary's family! I am using this edition of Stirrings to tell you about some new and some ongoing ministry initiatives that are a part of my ministry as your Interim Rector. You have heard me talk about lay leadership in collaboration with clergy as the preferred model of building a stronger mission oriented community. This Stirrings is intended to reinforce that message with information about specific plans and actions to be implemented. First, the website is being totally transformed under the leadership of Alison Wild and the team consisting of Amy Noe, Mike Higgins and me. The planning of a new website has evolved into a new Communications Team, chaired by Alison, and including those just named. This group is entrusted with the work of keeping the St. Mary's community fully informed (thus more fully involved). This group will also have the responsibility of strengthening our current efforts to communicate to McHenry County and beyond what's going on at St. Mary's, the Diocese of Chicago, and the Episcopal Church. Our Stewardship Ministry Team is, as a way of keeping us aware of our ministries and opportunities, is planning to install a large flat-screen TV monitor in the Great Hall. The TV will also provide a format for adult education as well as youth education, family movie nights etc.; it will also be used to connect us with diocesan and Episcopal Church news and events. Watch for it...coming soon! The new Outreach Team, chaired by Cate Williams, is in the beginning stages of becoming a powerful expression of the best energy of this good St. Mary's community, bringing the generosity of God's abundance to those most in need. Youth ministry leadership has been in communication with St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Wilmette looking for "best practice" ideas to learn and share. Youth ministry will be meeting regularly over the summer working to create a stronger program for the fall semester. Pastoral Care, already strengthened by the addition of a qualified lay chaplain, Chris Moore, will be expanded to offer a wider variety of services; this team is just now being formed; its members will be provided necessary formation opportunities, specific training as required, and will be a great addition to our life together. This group should be operative by this coming autumn. A word of appreciation to John Amrein and the Transition/Search leadership team; they play a critical role in implementing the core vision for St. Mary's future as outlined clearly in the parish Profile. My notion of Interim Ministry is not about maintenance and survival; it’s about building community, facilitating growth, creating opportunities for lay leadership.....change at St. Mary's, has, for the most part, been accepted generously as I have come to expect here. (continued on page 2) Vol.39, No.5 Page (continued) A note about Confirmation: we will be celebrating Confirmation at St. Mary's this autumn on Sunday, September 14. Bishop John C. Buchanan will be the confirming bishop. Confirmation 'classes' will be available to all interested in taking this step toward leadership in the parish and in the Episcopal Church. Adults who have not been previously confirmed are most heartily invited to be confirmed; please let me know of your interest, or if you would like to talk it over before committing, just give me a call/e-mail. Grace and Peace, Jack+ Easter Celebration The 2013-2014 Adult Formation Forum on Anglican Spirituality concludes May 4 with the focus on “Being Easter People”. A wonderful Easter Celebration (“Cuatro de mayo”) will follow the 10:00 a.m. service. There will be a delicious taco bar lunch, accompanied by plenty of entertainment. If Mother Nature cooperates, the celebration will be held outside in the Courtyard. In case of rain (or snow!), we’ll move to the Great Hall. Please plan to attend this special event, as we continue to celebrate the joy of our risen Lord! 22nd Annual National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive There are two ways you can help the Crystal Lake Food Pantry make this annual food drive a success. First, please collect and bag non-perishable food items, and place the bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 10. Your letter carrier will collect and deliver the bags to the food drive. Secondly, you and your family/friends/neighbors can stop by the Algonquin Township Building (3702 Rte 14 in CL) in the afternoon, Saturday, May 10th. All donated food will be transported there, and we hope for many hands to help lighten the load of sorting and boxing the food. If you’d like to volunteer, please stop by at 3:30 p.m. (in the back building) to be part of the action. Questions, call the pantry at 815-455-0961. Thanks for your support in feeding those in need. Memorial Day Crystal Lake Food Pantry Thanks to all our parishioners who continue to step forward each month to staff the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. Your support is very much appreciated! The next date St. Mary’s is scheduled to staff the pantry is Wednesday, May 14. Shift times are 9:30 a.m. to Noon, and Noon to 2:30 p.m. If you are interested in helping, please contact Heather Horeled at 815-455-3596. Future staffing dates are Monday, June 16, and Friday, July 18. Please mark these dates on your calendar. If you are unable to help in May, perhaps one of these other dates will fit your schedule. And don’t forget, there are donation envelopes for the Food Pantry located in the Narthex. When the pantry makes purchases through the Northern Illinois Food Bank, they can s-t-r-e-t-c-h your dollars much further than purchasing groceries at a local retailer. Many Thanks MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL for your prayers, thoughts, concerns, phone calls, cards, flowers and other gifts. And, I was humbled by your gracious welcome back to me on Palm Sunday. It's no fun having a broken leg, but knowing you are rooting for me helps a lot. While some healing has taken place, there is still a ways to go and I will be using a walker for quite some time. It means so very much to have your support. I will be reappearing in the liturgy as my healing progresses. I have missed being at the altar and serving you. Blessings, Dn. Barb The Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. Page 2 The Magnificat Annual Spring Clean-up Day All hands on deck!! We will have our annual Spring work day on Saturday, May 17, from 9:00 a.m. until Noon. After such a long, cold, harsh winter, our buildings and grounds need a little TLC! There will be plenty of tasks for all ages, both inside and out. We know everyone’s lives are very busy, but if you can even spare just an hour, it would be greatly appreciated. The more hands we have, the quicker our tasks will be. If you have any favorite gardening tools, or other tools that you like to use, feel free to bring them along. Afterwards, Junior Warden, Bill Wayne, promises a tasty lunch for a job well done! Contact Bill Wayne with any questions / suggestions. Bee Gees The Altar Guild does a wonderful job maintaining the sanctuary and altar at St. Mary’s. We have some opportunities to follow their example and be good stewards of our buildings and grounds. We are forming a group to work these opportunities. Did you think the only place for fellowship at St. Mary’s is the Great Hall on Sundays? We have a new opportunity for you to meet and get to know our fellow parishioners. We are forming a new group, Bee Gees – Building and Grounds Guild. Bee Gees will maintain and improve our buildings and grounds while giving us the opportunity to work together and get to know each other better. While a small team mows our lawn and the garden club tends to the gardens, there are many more opportunities to pitch in. Many hands make light work. Bee Gees activities will not be limited to Spring and Fall Clean Up days. We will get together occasionally in small groups and large ones to tackle general clean ups to big improvements. What’s your favorite tool? Paint brush, vacuum, mop, hammer, rake, shovel, spade, transit? Is your inner Tim (Tool Time) Taylor looking for an outlet? St. Mary’s projects, inside and out, large and small require tools from a broom to a ditch witch. Come join us. Do you have some Tupperware to spare? As you know, St. Mary’s is very generous when it comes to potlucks, special event dinners and yes, funeral luncheons. Many times after those meals there is food left, and many people want to take home a "bite or two". Could you check your cupboard and see if you have a few extra plastic containers that you could donate? Sorry they won't be able to be returned, but you will know that someone is enjoying our hospitality. Just drop off your donations in the kitchen and mark the bag “plastic ware to share”. Thank you. Attention St. Mary’s Youth Christian Education Volunteers On Sunday, May 18, 2014, all of our SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS, SUBSTITUTES, ROOM ASSISTANTS, SMART MINISTRY PARTICIPANTS, CHILDREN’S WORSHIP LEADERS & ASSISTANTS, YOUTH GROUP LEADERS, and NURSERY STAFF will be recognized during the 10:00 a.m. Choral Community Eucharist in honor of your ministries on behalf of our parish children and youth. Please plan to attend worship on this Sunday. MAY 18, 2014 Last Day of Sunday School Before Summer Break On Sunday, May 18, immediately following Sunday School dismissal and the SMART program activities at 11:30 a.m., there will be an ice cream social in the Great Hall for our children, young adults, and their families. We hope to see all of you on Sunday, May 18, 2014! Please sign up in the Great Hall or contact Bill Wayne. Heads Up: Summer Schedule The Summer service schedule will begin on Sunday, June 1, with ONE combined service at 9:00 a.m. What a terrific way to get to know the folks that usually attend the “other service”. Vol.39, No.5 Page 3 Art Gallery News Many, many thanks to Marge Smith, Carol and Jim Dingle for putting up and contributing to the lovely fabric arts exhibit. And, thanks to all of you who brought items to share – such a variety of works. It is a beautiful array of different kinds of fabric arts, so if you've not taken a closer look please do so. Amazing what our hands can create! Deacon Barb Senior Luncheon St. Mary Seniors (SMS) please remember to mark your calendars for Saturday, May 31, 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall, to meet for a tasty lunch and great conversation. Please contact Amy Noe at 815/4591009, (email [email protected]) to let her know you will be attending. We look forward to seeing you on May 31st! Deacons’ Challenge Update 'Brother can you spare a dime?' Yes, we did! The Deacons' Challenge on behalf of our Bishop brought in $535.44 as of April 27, to help our own Crystal Lake Food Pantry. Thanks to all who contributed. Lives are being touched by your generosity. Special thanks, also, to Janet Stiff for coordinating this project and to Hannah Stiff for her creative art work in preparing the posters and collections jars. Blessings – Dns. Barb & Diane Forward Day by Day The booklet, Forward Day by Day, provides daily bible readings and meditations, which many parishioners find very helpful. The next quarter’s edition, for the months of May/June/July, is now available on a Narthex table, priced at a very reasonable 85 cents. If you haven’t previously used this daily devotional guide, please pick up a copy and try it. The Picnic A Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at the town's annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter. "This baked ham is really delicious," the priest teased the rabbi. "You really ought to try it. I know it's against your religion, but I can't understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don't know what you're missing. You just haven't lived until you've tried Mrs. Hall's prized Virginia Baked Ham. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?" Stained Glass Window of the Month: THE HOLY SPIRIT WINDOW St. Mary’s is blessed to have several, very beautiful stained glass windows in our church. They were designed by Robert Bak of Michaudel Studios, Chicago, in 1958. Each month, we will feature one of the windows, and we thank parishioner, John Munson, who photographed them. The Holy Spirit window is located above the main entrance to the church, facing McHenry Ave. In many churches and cathedrals this large, round window is also known as the great rose, or wheel window. Page 4 The rabbi looked at the priest with a big grin, and said, "At your wedding." It’s almost here! We’ve been working hard, behind the scenes, to bring you a fresh, new St. Mary’s website, which will go “live” this month. Watch for announcements in the bulletin, and your email.
