Matthew Kelly Event – Thanks! On Friday, November 7, best selling author (Rediscover Catholicism) and noted speaker Matthew Kelly came to St. Mary of the Lake and spoke to a church full of people eager to live life with greater purpose and passion. I am grateful to the many people who made this event possible, most especially our Rediscover Team – Heidi and Dave Harvey and Rachel and Brian Bonin, along with Kathy Matschke and a host of eager and generous volunteers who helped make the evening a great success. I am also very grateful to the parish staff, especially Mary Scherping and Laurie Munns, who did a lot of work behind the scenes. Finally, I thank the pastors and volunteers from the surrounding parishes of St. Pius X, St. Jude of the Lake, St. Genevieve and St. Peter of North St. Paul who advertised and encouraged this event. Debt Questions Our recent capital campaign feasibility study surfaced some questions regarding the parish debt. I am using my bulletin column to respond to the questions. Last week, I addressed the question of how we got into debt. This week, the question is: Q2: Why do we need another campaign? Our monthly debt payment is $43,332.72 (a total of $520,000 every year). Without a campaign, we will pay that amount every month until March 2027 (yes 2027), when the note is due and we would still owe an additional balloon payment of $3.3 million. If we proceeded on that course, we would not only pay the principal of $7.9 million, but would also pay an additional $2.1 million in interest. Currently, the parish makes its monthly payments through a combination of dollars from operations and reserves from the last campaign. Those reserves will run out in 2015, meaning that the entire $520,000 for debt service would need to come from operations. That is approximately 1/3 of our entire plate and envelope. We could not direct that level of resources to debt service and still maintain our current level of programming and ministries. The goal of a campaign would be to raise enough money that we make a significant reduction in our principal, so that a) we would save money in interest payments, b) more not less money could be directed to programming and ministries and c) so that we could service the debt from operations. If you have a question, please call me, drop me a note or email me at [email protected] and I would be happy to respond to you. Peace, Fr. Talbot Page 3 November 16, 2014 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time BAPTISMS We welcome into the Christian family the following children who were baptized last weekend: Zachary John Kanz, son of James and Tiffany; Vivian Laurel Morris, daughter of Zachary and Corrine; Jane Catherine Hughes, daughter of Matthew and Heidi. The following hard working volunteers made a seemingly overwhelming job fall into place in short order. THANK YOU so very much! The rummage sale netted $7,537.66 which finances the publication and mailing of the annual Alumni Newsletter. Two hundred dollars ($200) was given to the eighth grade toward their annual class trip to Washington D.C. Frassati classrooms, offices, Resource Center, Youth Group, Recycled Wardrobes, Listening House, Bridging Inc., Savers, Half Price Books, and Joseph's Coat all benefited from sale donations. Thank you to A to Z Rental for their donation of clothing racks and to all of our shoppers and the following super volunteers who made this sale so successful. Our apology to any helper who was not acknowledged here. Your assistance was vital to the success of our sale. Watch for the Spring Rummage Sale. See you there! Opportunities to share time and talent are published periodically in the announcements and/or newsletter. Volunteer hours should be recorded in the office volunteer box. Each volunteer is expected to adhere to the policies of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. It is required that all volunteers and staff of Catholic schools, including parents and guardians, who devote time to school activities involving children undergo a background check, VIRTUS training, and sign a volunteer code of conduct.
