From the Pastor Dear brothers and sisters, Today is both “Laity Sunday” and “World Mission Sunday”. We have missionaries from various societies who come to our parish two or three times a year. We do so because we are all part of one Church and since most of us can’t go out to foreign countries ourselves we can assist through our prayers and through our sacrificial giving. I am glad that we have so many missionaries who come to visit us. Sometimes I feel badly when I see how much we give but at least we are giving something. Speaking of missionaries we will have a visit from a priest named Father Timothy Ryan. He works for Cross Catholic Outreach. He worked in Columbia for several years and so can speak Spanish. He will be here next weekend to preach at all the Masses and we are invited to take home some of his literature and give as we are able. I hope you will give as sacrificially as possible. The work of the Church involves announcing the Kingdom of God to the ends of the earth. We have been doing so for 2,000 years. It is an awesome task but fundamental to our lives as Catholics. Catholic, of course means “universal” and the message that we bring is for all peoples everywhere. Many of the missionary groups that have come to visit us serve the poorest of the poor. It is a great privilege to give to Christ disguised in these poor people. “Whatsoever you did to the least of my brethren you did for me.” Perhaps some members of our community will be called to join missionary societies. The Church needs those who can go out to foreign countries and dedicate their lives to preaching the Gospel of Christ and serve Him in the poor. I will be leaving to go to Rome tomorrow, October 20th for the pilgrimage trip to celebrate the permission of Pope Benedict XVI called “Summorum October 19, 2014 Pontificum” which grants permission to all the world’s priest to celebrate the traditional liturgy as long as the priest knows how to do it and there is a group of the faithful who are requesting it. There are about 20 pilgrims from the U.S. who have signed on to the trip and we will be met by thousands of other Catholics who are coming from all over the world to celebrate this special permission of Pope Benedict. I will be back on October 28th. Please pray for us and we will pray for you. The construction of the new chapel is progressing slowly but surely. I hope that soon there will be even more signs of this progress. The renovation work on the old convent is also coming along under the capable supervision of Jim Crow and the Knights of Columbus. The construction company working on our chapel are also lending us a hand. We are very hopeful that the convent will be ready by next August for the sisters’ arrival. Bishop Slattery is fully supportive and is assisting us in this project. I am looking for donations as we will have to furnish beds, chairs, dining room table, refrigerator, stove, washing machine and dryer, new windows, insulation, kitchen items such as plates, and silverware, glasses, sheets and blankets, and pillows etc. etc. You can imagine all the things that will be needed in order to make the convent a home. It will be wonderful to have the sisters living right here on our campus. Please pray that the construction of the chapel and the reconstruction of the convent progresses well and we are able to finish the chapel by May 21st of next year and the convent by August of next year. God bless and keep you in His great love. Father Timothy Davison When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel at its beauty and power; when they see what little impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at what we say. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button for debate was so-called “general absolution,” by which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely varying traditions in both east and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy See had already given this permission, during the First and Second Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind of “blanket permission.” Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with three different forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.
