Although many Catholics are not familiar with it, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults was restored to the Church in 1972 at the request of the Second Vatican Council. All Souls Day is Sunday, Nov. 2nd. Thr oughout all of November, we will prayerfully remember our faithful departed. ALL SOULS envelopes are available in your envelope packet or in the back of the church. You may write the names of your departed loved ones on the ALL SOULS envelopes, place a stipend inside the envelope, and place them in the collection basket. Scripture Insights In most of the Old Testament, there was no belief in the afterlife: the believer’s only opportunity to live with God was in this life. Physical death was seen as the end of life in the presence of God. The First Reading form the Book of Wisdom shows some of the first indications of the belief that the deceased survive physical death. The Responsorial Psalm today is the most beloved prayer in the Bible; the Lords Prayer. The Shepherd is our true guide, not only in this life , but as our soul navigates the final journey through death to new life in Christ. The Gospel presents Jesus as the source of eternal life after death. As the visible presence of the invisible God, he enacts only the will “of the one who sent me”, who commanded that he should not “lose” anyone in his charge. A subtle condition suggests we must receive the life Jesus offers: “everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life”. Seeing and believing are complementary and necessary ways of accepting this grace.
