Shroud of Turin Talk
Dr. Larry Mueller, a St. Mark’s parishioner and
thoracic surgeon, will offer an encore presentation from
his unique perspective of “The Shroud of Turin” on
Tuesday, March 31st, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM, here at
St. Mark’s. A thoracic surgeon is a medical doctor who
performs operations on the heart, lungs, esophagus, and
other organs in the chest. You won’t want to miss this
amazing talk!
Music Notes by Dawne Mechlinski
Learning something ‘by heart’ requires more than
just rote memorization, although that is a part of it,
too. For to learn something ‘by heart’ means more
than just inputting data into your system…it lives in
you and finds life inside you. Musicians often learn
music ‘by heart’ and will be especially accustomed to
the process. Musicians memorize the notes on the
page, teaching their muscles to remember the moves,
visualizing the music and listening to it. So it is, with
the ways and knowledge of the Lord. When we as
choir members and church communicants learn
hymns, chants and our favorite songs by heart we are
not only memorizing music but also scripture verses
that we can recall when in prayer, through our own or
others suffering or even in rejoicing. It is a double
blessing! “I will place my law within them, and write it
upon their hearts. No longer will they have need to
teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the
Lord. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says
the Lord.” (Excerpt from Old Testament reading this
weekend Jeremiah 31: 31-34)
During Lent, we are singing parts of the LaƟn Mass, known
as Jubilate Deo LaƟn Chants, which can be found in the
One in Faith hymnal beginning on page 156.
Calling all Moms! If you have any
gently-used or new spring-weight
clothing for babies or toddlers,
our Spanish ministry has a great need!
We also need clothing donations
for teens.
If you are looking for a way to help the poor in your
community this Easter, we always welcome donations
of new clothes and small kitchen appliances in working
order for our families.
Please bring your donation to the church basement on
Sundays at 4 PM when volunteers are on hand to sort
and distribute them!

Irish Nite Thank Yous by Pam Pertgen and Margie Zaccaro, Irish Nite Coordinators
Go raibh cead mile maith agat!! Thanks for making
Irish Night #8 a huge success.
Once again, St. Mark’s Parish Community came
together for a great evening of fun and fellowship. From
11 AM on March 7th, when the decorating and table
setup crew arrived, to 11 PM when the last of the clean
up was finished, we worked together so that we could all
celebrate Irish heritage in song and laughter.
Starting with setup, we would like to thank Mary
Reilly and the wonderful CYO group who hung the
shamrocks and helped to set the tables. Also decorating
were choir members and friends: Helen, Judy, Ann,
Kathy, and the Clancy family. Thanks to Steve L, Lucio
and Edgar for moving and arranging all the tables.
We started the evening upstairs with our prelude of
Irish Songs and Hymns. Thanks to the choir and fellow
cantors for the gift of song which continued into our
Mass. Thanks to Monsignor Flynn for a beautiful Mass
and for letting all this happen!
Meanwhile, downstairs in Fr. Child Hall, Billy
Lawlor was setting up his keyboard and Bill and Kasey
Passaic of Harrigan’s Pub were cooking and setting up
dinner for a crowd of just under 250 people!! Yes- we
broke the record again! Ran out of potatoes at one point,
threw a few more into the pot and kept on serving. We
can’t thank Bill and Kasey enough for their generosity
and time. Billy Lawlor was wonderful too!
St. Mark’s CYO again supplied inexhaustible energy
by serving the meals. We could not do it without you.
Our friend Mary joined Margie and the food prep
crew in the kitchen and worked hard all night. Our
bartenders were Zeke Zaccaro and Eric Pertgen and two
members of the Knights of Columbus of Asbury Park,
James Ryan McNeeley and Scottie Arigot. The beer and
wine was once again provided by Joe Bassone of 71
liquors. Thanks to all of you!
When it came time for dessert, we cut the delicious
cakes that were donated by Tom Flynn of Saker
ShopRite. His donation of ShopRite gift certificates also
covered the cost of the soda bread. We enjoyed Irish
coffee with cake and cookies while our after-dinner
festivities continued. Since our step dancers had other
commitments this year, we asked YOU to dance and
several of the party going crowd showed off their Caeli
dancing skills. The kids once again danced all night and
had fun leading the Unicorn Song.
The choir led us in the sing-along which is always a
good time. We were overjoyed that choir alumnae Pat M.
and Joe P. (who have moved away) came back to join us
for the event. Joe P.’s rendition of “Danny Boy” was better
than ever.
All too soon, it was time to clean up. Thanks to all of
you partygoers who pitched in at the end of the night.
And special thanks to Carlos Medina and his son Carlos,
and Lucio and Edgar who came to put all the tables and
chairs back into place and stayed late to clean up.
Thanks to all of you who attended and were part of
another night of “great Craic!”
