HOLY SATURDAY
SÁBADO SANTO
From our Pastor......
Because of the arcane formula of vernal equinox, full moon,
and other elements that determine its date, Easter has arrived
early for several years in a row. It surely seems that way to me.
We have barely put away wreaths and swept up pine needles,
and already there are palm branches lying in my backyard.
Neither is it the easiest thing to jump from the joyous warmth
of Christmas to the austerities of Lent, with but a few weeks
in between. Nevertheless, we have arrived at the great day of
wonder and mystery that is both the source and sustenance
of our faith, Easter. All that Jesus of Nazareth taught, even his
miracles, would not be remembered were it not for the event of
Easter, the Resurrection. As said St. Paul said so well, “if Christ
is not raised, your faith is in vain and we remain in our sins.”
More than ever, we need to challenge ourselves to live as people
of the Resurrection; people for which new life is possible even
in the face of death’s memory and despair.
Whether we ourselves are in danger of death, or we mourn the
passing of a loved one, the hope of rising to new life, in body
and in spirit, is the lesson of Easter. It is a lesson not only with
respect to the next world, but for this world as well, knowing
that we have the capacity to rise to new life in the spirit, and to
reclaim authentic hope from seeming hopelessness. Hope, after

all, is one of the cardinal virtues of Christian faith. In St.
Paul’s writing, hope binds together the virtues of Faith and
Love. In this sense, it extends beyond our personal horizon,
since abiding Love, or Charity, is our Christian posture
with respect to the wider world. Our calling, as people of
the Resurrection, is to be witnesses for Hope, even beacons
of Hope, in a world that has chosen to follow down the
dark path of fear, anger, violence, and despair for too many
years. A wonderful friend and mentor, Fr. Luke Buckles OP
once said that standing at the foot of the cross, the Blessed
Mother had no reason for human optimism, but she had
every reason to Hope. Given the immeasurable needs of
this world, nothing is possible without Hope. Yet given the
truth of our Faith, that with God nothing is impossible;
no human problem is insurmountable, if our Hope is both
true and alive. Hope is our Christian legacy, and we must
invest it well and wisely. May the Hope of Easter inform
our spirit and guide our lives this day and always.

We hope this year in Lent you have had the time to reflect, to pray
and to listen to the silence of God. Sometimes this is best enjoyed
as we marvel at the wonder of nature. The setting sun, the gentle
waves and even the stormy skies are all a part of our journey
through life. There is hope in the knowledge that we can find peace.
As we approach the Easter Season we have wonderful books,
bibles and prayer books as well as books of spirituality. Our
selection of children’s books is extensive and as always there are
many new additions for the upcoming Communion season.
We hope you will take the time to come in and browse, sit a
while and read, or listen to the music. Our staff is knowledgeable
and friendly – eager to help you or just share a little fellowship.
We are here to serve you 7 days a week, from 9-5PM. You may
also visit us online at www.missionsanluisobispo.org – click on

Happy Easter – He has risen!
Wishing you a joyful celebration.
Faith formation meets April 12 &
19 this month. Our first retreat on
the Eucharist is April 19.
Look for this quote in the email
attachment I sent to you on
“Celebrating Easter – ideas for
busy parents”: “An unbiased
observer, perhaps a visitor from
another planet, might conclude that
our Easter celebration is as much a
festival of bunnies, eggs, candy, and
new clothes as a celebration of Jesus’
resurrection.” This Easter you
might help your child make the
connection between baby chicks,
eggs and bunnies as symbols
of new life and then help them
make the connection to Jesus’
resurrection to new life and our
new life in him. Easter blessings!

tierra. (Continuará).
