Saturday, August 15th St. Mary will celebrate our 150th Birthday Party!! Dear Members of St. Mary, Jesus’ rising from the dead is the bedrock of everything else we proclaim to be true about God and about us. It is the exclamation point (!) of the Good News that in Jesus, God has entered a broken world and redeemed it. Given its centrality to our faith, with what confidence can we proclaim that the Resurrection is true? How do we “know” that it happened? The various Resurrection accounts do not agree in detail. What is common to them is the person of Mary Magdalene. Jesus appeared first to her. She is the one chosen to be the teller of the good news—the evangelizer—to the apostles. Interestingly, the Scriptures never again mention her by name. There is much popular confusion about her background. There is in fact no basis for her being the woman caught in adultery, nor the woman who bathed Jesus’ feet with her tears. We are told that Jesus had “freed her from seven demons.” Over the centuries male celibate writers would associate the demons with her sexuality, which, as someone wrote, “may have been a comment about their own demons, not Mary's.” Contemporary biblical scholarship regards the demons as symptoms of some kind of mental or emotional affliction. As seven is the perfect number in the Bible, we can imagine that prior to knowing Jesus she was perfectly overwhelmed and utterly helpless. The Gospel for this morning is John’s account of Mary’s going to the tomb, finding it empty, and racing to inform the disciples. They in turn run to the tomb and find it as she said. The Lectionary ends the story there. What we should read at home, if we haven’t already, is the rest of the story. The disciples have left Mary alone at the tomb, weeping. She is asked first by two angels, then by Jesus himself (she doesn’t recognize him), why the tears? Jesus also asks, “Whom are you looking for?” She recognizes Jesus only when he says a very special word in a very special way: her name. She knows the Lord is risen only when she hears him say her name. What are we crying for? What is that loss, that wound, or that fear, that keeps us from being whole? What keeps us from recognizing the Lord through our tears? In lives that are so busy and so full of stress, lives that demand hundreds of decisions every day about how to spend our time and energy, who are we looking for through it all? Who is that mysterious presence that promises the fullness of peace? The story of Mary Magdalene is our story as well. Today is the day we listen very closely for a single word, spoken in love, spoken by the Lord himself. We recognize the word as our very own name, and we believe. Have a blessed Easter! Fr. Robert Samuel Brocato THE FIVE 1’S FOR FOLLOWING JESUS One hour a week in prayer One hour a week with Scripture One hour a week studying some aspect of faith or spirituality One hour a week in service to the less fortunate in our community And, in gratitude for all God has given us, One hour of pay in the Sunday Offertory ADA – WEEK 9 Goal: 1,000 families to reach $215,000.00 Totals to Date: 557 Families for $166,030.00 Left to Go: 443 families for $48,970.00 Thanks be to God for leading the 557; may the Spirit move the other 443 leaders! Special thanks go to all who made donations of, or offerings toward, our Easter flowers and plants, to members of the Liturgy Community, Choir and friends for the preparations of our liturgies and church for this Feast, to all of our office volunteers who spend one day preparing the yearly Easter mailing, and to all others who scarified to make our Holy Week as prayerful, enjoyable and inviting as it has been. Happy Easter!! Padre Robert Samuel Brocato FELICITACIONES EN LA PASCUA! Easter Sunday - April 5, 2015 LITURGY 408-847-5151 [email protected] Happy Easter! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to transform our Lent environment into the explosion of color and joy that says “Happy Easter.” All the symbols of Easter have to do with new life. Light: the days are growing longer and lighter; Jesus is the light of the world; our lives are illuminated by our belief in the Resurrection. Water: necessary for life itself; cleansing; pure. White and gold: colors of purity and light. Easter is the core of our beliefs as Catholic Christians. That’s why our celebration lasts 50 days. May God bless you and yours in your joyful celebration of Easter. Rose Barry, Pastoral Associate He is Risen! They hold signs urging us to pray for and work for peace. The Women in Black is an international, non-religious group who stand in silent witness to the horror of war. It was begun by a group of Israeli mothers who wanted to do something to stop the violence that surrounds them and affects every family in the Holy Land. Their peaceful, quiet, prayerful witness appealed to folks around the world who hope and pray that one day, we will live in a peaceful world. Next time you drive by when they are there, we hope you will honk or wave in support. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY/NAMETAG WEEKEND This favorite event will return April 19th. When she arrives, the stone has been rolled back; the tomb is empty! She runs to tell the Apostles that someone has taken the body of the Lord. 2. John and Peter come running to the tomb. They think someone has stolen the body. When John sees the cloth that has covered Jesus’s head neatly rolled up and set aside they knew the body had not been stolen. Thieves would certainly not be so tidy! The cloth helped John come to know that Jesus is risen. 3. What serves as a sign to us of the Lord’s Resurrection?
