“We all have struggled”
Bronx Community College graduates set off

I
t was large – and wide.
The 2015 graduating class of Bronx
Community College, of the City University
of New York, was simply massive.
“This is the largest graduation class in
the history of BCC,” reported Eduardo J.
Marti, BCC’s Interim President, during the
55th commencement held late last month on
campus.
Comprised of 2,149 students from over 70
countries, it was an unprecedented display of
diversity.
Marti noted that the class included war
veterans, immigrants, and parents – graduates
of all ages.
“The youngest graduate is 18 and the oldest
67,” said Marti.

to contribute thoughtfully, energetically to
your community and the world.”
Moreover, over half of the student body
were the first in their families to earn a college
degree.
“You have overcome obstacles, you have
persevered,” said Marti. “Congratulations.”
“It wasn’t easy for us to get to this point,”
agreed Quintin Price, President of the Student
Government Association. Some of his
classmates, he observed, had been raised in
foster homes, possessed criminal records, and
had endured homelessness.
“We all have struggled,” he said.
At first glance, Kirssy Martinez might
appear to be the exception.
Martinez, one of the class valedictorians,
maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
During her remarks, she happily
acknowledged her father Guillermo, who had
flown in just for the occasion.
But his visit with his daughter would be
shorter than most.
He had come in from the Dominican
Republic on a special 11-hour temporary
travel visa provided directly from Senator
Charles Schumer.
The two had not seen each other in 13 years.
Martinez was brought to the United States
from the Dominican Republic at age 14 to live
with an aunt in the Bronx.
After graduating high school, she realized
that as an undocumented resident, applying
for, being admitted to, and studying at college
was going to be a challenge.
“Back in 2005 I wanted to go to college but
was terrified to apply,” said the 27-year-old.
Her greatest fear was being asked for a
Social Security Number that she didn’t have.
“Being undocumented was the biggest
challenge.”
But in June 2012, with President Barack
Obama’s executive action, she became
eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA) program.
It allowed immigrants who had entered

S
hirley Lam’s last career lasted
a quarter of a century.
She expects her next one to last even
longer.
After arriving from China decades ago,
Lam worked full-time as a housewife.
At 45, she decided to head back to school.
“I always wanted to
have my own business,”
explained Lam.
Soon after graduating
from Suffolk Community
College with a business
degree, she began selling
medical supplies.
Her inspiration?
A quick glance at a
newspaper advertisement
just a few days shy of graduation.
“It said ‘baby boomer adult diapers,’”
recalled Lam about the Wall Street Journal
ad that instantly caught her attention and
ultimately changed her life.
“This is the market I was looking for,”
she said. “I want[ed] to sell adult diapers.”
Now, Lam is the head of a medical supply
service that dispenses everything from adult
diapers to surgical instruments.
“I sell so many products,” said a joyous
Lam, noting that her company sold in volume
to hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics,
among others.
She also employs nearly all of her immediate
family members, including her husband
whom she reports was, at first, somewhat
dismissive of his wife’s entrepreneurial drive.

(M/WBEs) at the Ninth
Annual Procurement Fair
at the Bank of New York
Mellon. They met with
purchasers from more
than 70 city and state
agencies in addition to
private sector companies.
In addition, the fair offered “Opportunity
Rooms” in which participants learned more
about contracting opportunities with projects
like Build it Back and PlaNYC.

Business Services (SBS), the event is intended
to help connect minority and women-owned
businesses with public and private contracting

The task of expanding access to M/WBEs
falls to SBS Commissioner Torres-Springer;
Maya Wiley, the mayor’s Chief Legal
Counsel; and Lisette Camilo, Director of the
Mayor’s Office of Contract Services.
The procurement fair comes at a time
when the de Blasio administration has been
criticized for what some say has been less than
sufficient progress in ensuring that minority
and women-owned businesses receive their
fair share of the city’s procurement contracts.
Bertha Lewis, a founding member of the
Working Families Party and President of
the Black Institute, was joined by Public
Advocate Letitia “Tish” James and other
elected officials and community leaders in
April at a City Hall press conference during
which a 60-page report titled Not Good
Enough: The Myth of ‘Good Efforts and
Best Efforts’ was released.
It determined that approximately 4
percent of the city’s prime and sub contracts
had been awarded to M/WBEs, which
Lewis deplored as “a little bit disgraceful.”
James has called for the appointment of a
Chief Diversity Officer, similar to the statelevel post.

am a Bronx native,
daughter, sister, mother of
three beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer and
motivator,” says contributor
Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican
descent, as she continues to
explore her hometown.
Here is her latest installment.
It is such an exciting time to be here.
Though I was born and raised in the
borough, I have come to discover how
little I knew about the Bronx. In 2011, as
I embarked on this journey of discovery,
I created a bucket list of places to see and
things to do.
It has been amazing.
In this year alone, I have been able to
canoe along five miles of the Bronx River.
The Bronx River Alliance kicks off canoe
season with its annual Flotilla, during
which hundreds make their way from Shoe
Lace Park at 219th Street, all the way to
Hunts Point Riverside Park on Lafayette
Avenue.
I was one of those upon the river,
and I can tell you, if you have not yet
canoed the Bronx River, you have
not fully experienced the Bronx.
Another item I was able to check off my
list this year was spending time at the old
Bronx Borough Courthouse on 161st Street
between Third and Brook Avenues. It had
been closed to the public since 1977, but
now the nonprofit arts organization No
Longer Empty is providing free community
programming there every weekend through
July 19th.
Make your way there and explore it for
yourself.
I was also recently a guest at the Bronx
Ball, an annual event which is part of Bronx
Week, a 10-day series of events highlighting
the best of our county. The elegant Ball is held
outdoors, under a large white tent at Orchard
Beach and celebrates inductees of the Bronx
Walk of Fame. It was an amazing evening,
one I look forward to enjoying again next
year.
I always dreamed of having one of my
Bronx photos be part of an exhibition. Some
months ago, I entered a photo contest through
the Friends of Pelham Bay Park, and I was
thrilled to have won first place. The photo
will be at display at the City Island Nautical
Museum beginning July, and the exhibition
will then travel to other venues throughout
our borough.
There are slightly more idiosyncratic items
too.
Weird as it may sound, I had written down
“eating at Chipotle in the Bronx,” as I truly
enjoy the restaurant’s food.
Well, the popular chain opened its first
location by the Third Avenue Plaza earlier this
year, and I will no longer have to catch a train
for the eatery’s delicious food.
And there is more to come.
I am very excited that soon, the High Bridge
is finally reopening, and despite years of
delays, this vital link between the Bronx and
Manhattan will again be accessible to the public.
And later this summer, I will be able to
cross out yet another item as the highly
anticipated Randall’s Island connector is set
to be complete. This link will connect the
South Bronx, over the Bronx Kill, directly
to Randall’s Island. It is part of the South
Bronx Greenway, and the bike and pedestrian
lanes led to 400 acres of open space.
It is quite an honor to witness these amazing
occurrences in our borough, and my ultimate
goal is for you also to be excited. Create your
own list and start living those experiences.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here your
entire life, or a few years, there is always
something to do to discover and enjoy the
wonder of the Bronx.

aquí.
Aunque yo nací y crecí en el condado, he
llegado a descubrir lo poco que sabía sobre el
Bronx. En 2011, cuando me embarqué en este

aceptadas.

SUMMER STEM 2015, a
new citywide program to provide
students who just completed
grades 2, 7, and 10 with free,
full-day, high-quality STEM
instruction, are now being
accepted.
SUMMER STEM will serve 1,200
students – 400 from each grade.
SUMMER STEM is open to all students
in 2nd, 7th, and 10th grades who have
had at least 90% attendance during this
school year and are not required to attend
summer school. Applications and the list
of SUMMER STEM sites are available
online
at
http://on.nyc.gov/1QxGIt9.
Parents can also get more information
and support, including paper applications
and applications in languages other than
English, by contacting their school’s parent
coordinator. Applicants may rank up to
two sites on their applications, and will be
selected for the program by lottery.
All applications must be received by June
15.
The sessions will run Mondays through
Thursdays – from July 6 to July 30 for 2nd
graders, and from July 6 to August 6 for 7th
and 10th graders.
Breakfast and lunch will be served at the
program sites.
For the 2nd grade SUMMER STEM
program, the DOE will use the “Engineering
is Elementary” curriculum that integrates
engineering and technology concepts
and skills with science topics. In the 7th
and 10th grade programs, students will
learn robotics and “Science of Smart
Cities,” a program that focuses on the
engineering, technology, and science of
urban development and sustainability. All
SUMMER STEM curricula will involve
hands-on learning. In addition, students
will have arts and physical education
enrichment opportunities.
SUMMER STEM 2015 was developed
in coordination with Microsoft, NYU
Polytechnic, the Boston Museum of
Science, and the New York Hall of Science.
“Summer learning opportunities are
crucial for staving off learning loss and
preparing students for their next school
year, and there is no better time for
students to immerse themselves in the
important STEM disciplines,” said Schools
Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “In SUMMER
STEM 2015, our students will have an
opportunity to discover their passions and
learn valuable science and math skills. I
look forward to seeing the work they do.”

Driver arrested
in fatal
hit-and-run
The hit-and-run took place at West 225th Street.
A
Manhattan man has been
arrested and charged in the
February hit-and-run death of a
38-year-old Columbia University
employee in Marble Hill.
Michael Longo, 58, is accused of running
over Daniel Cabrera, a father of one and
Columbia University budget manager, as
he crossed Broadway at West 225th Street
shortly before 7 p.m. on February 23.
According to prosecutors, Longo was
driving a 2007 Dodge Magnum when he hit
Cabrera, then sped away, leaving Cabrera for
dead.
The vehicle, which was not registered to
Longo, was later recovered in Washington
Heights.
“The incident was captured on video
surveillance, and after the collision the
defendant did not stop the vehicle, and
went right over the Broadway Bridge into
Manhattan,” said Bronx Assistant District
Attorney Sharon Adler.
At a June 2 arraignment, Longo was
charged with leaving the scene of an incident
without reporting.
Longo, who pleaded not guilty, faces up to
seven years in prison if convicted.
Cabrera, a resident of Cortlandt Manor in
Westchester County, was on his way to the
Marble Hill Metro-North station at the time
of the incident, authorities said.
Because the incident occurred within 500
yards of Bronx County, jurisdiction falls to the
Bronx District Attorney’s office.
Longo has a lengthy rap sheet, including a
17-year prison stint for an attempted murder
conviction, as well as convictions for firearms
and assault charges.
At the arraignment, Adler requested that the
defendant be remanded, but Supreme Court
Justice George Villegas set bail at $25,000
bond or $15,000 cash.
The case has been adjourned until August 25.

sido arrestado y acusado por

Michael Longo, de 58 años, está acusado
de atropellar a Daniel Cabrera -padre y

Visit the Bronx Documentary Center for a
viewing of Rubble Kings, a new documentary
film about the street gang revolution that
impacted the world over through hip hop.
Archival footage and present-day interviews
with former gang members lead to a
presentation on an age when confronting a
bankrupt, decaying city and the dashed
hopes of the civil rights generation, AfricanAmerican and Latino teenagers, including
the Savage Skulls and the Ghetto Brothers,
took over the streets of 1970’s New York.
Interviews reveal how peace was brokered in
a most unlikely manner, laying the foundation

amille Stanford has struggled –
with struggling.
For the Hostos Community College
student, balancing her work, academic and
life responsibilities are simply in a day’s
work.
She has been a straight A student who had
earned the salutatorian spot in her class.
But when it all became too much in 2014,
Stanford sought help.
“I was very stressed out with personal,
work and school issues,” she explained. She
visited with trusted administrators at Hostos
and began counseling.
Though she had family members and friends
to talk with, the value of an independent and
neutral sounding board was critical.
“I am on the receiving end of therapy,” said
Stanford. “[It] is a place to talk to somebody.”
Stanford spoke at the Urban Youth Alliance
International’s 11 Annual Bronx Mental
Health Forum held on Fri., Jun. 5th at the
Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center;
this year’s discussion focused on how mental
health is addressed in schools.
Opening remarks were delivered by New
York City’s First Lady Chirlane McCray,
who also serves as the Chair of the nonprofit
organization, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance
New York City.
McCray has been an outspoken advocate
for mental health initiatives, and has shared

of 18, revealed that she was suffering from
anxiety, depression, and addiction.
“Children bring their pain into school,”
said McCray.
“It’s personal,” she said at another recent

recently talked about her struggles. But also
in my life, I feel as though it’s the one thing
that no one ever talks about.”
Among those in attendance were industry
and academic professionals, elected officials,
family members, students and residents.

C
uando escuchas por las calles de
Nueva York la canción “¡Qué Bonita
Bandera!” sabes que la celebración
latina más grande de esta ciudad está
próxima a celebrarse. El Desfile Nacional
Puertorriqueño inunda la Quinta Avenida
con banderas rojas, blancas y azules,
y los ritmos de salsa, bomba, plena, y
reguetón.
Desde 1958, los puertorriqueños en Nueva
York y los que llegan de la isla y otros estados,
hacen de este evento una gran fiesta que agrupa
a poco más de 2 millones de personas. El evento,
más que un desfile, es la mejor celebración
de la cultura y el orgullo puertorriqueño, y un
recordatorio a todos los neoyorquinos de las
enormes contribuciones que esta comunidad ha
dado a la ciudad, el estado y el país.
Los puertorriqueños han recorrido un largo
camino desde las luchas en los años 60 y 70.

año pasado, el legendario Regimiento 165 de
Infantería, Los Borinqueneers, se convirtió en
el primer grupo de latinos que recibe la Medalla
de Oro del Congreso, por su sacrificio en defensa
de la libertad de este país.
Los puertorriqueños también han llegado a
la luna con el astronauta Joseph Acabá y han
brillado con sus grandes estrellas del mundo
artístico. Una de ellas, Rita Moreno, la Gran
Mariscal del desfile de este año, es una de las 12
personas -y la única latina o latino-, en ganar los
premios Oscar, Emmy, Grammy y Tony.
Este año, el desfile también honra las
contribuciones de afro-puertorriqueños como
Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, un historiador, escritor
y activista que creó conciencia sobre los aportes
que los afro-latinos y afroamericanos han ofrecido
al país. Como primer afroamericano electo
presidente de la Asamblea de Nueva York, me
siento orgulloso de su legado.
En el pasado, he marchado en el desfile
puertorriqueño, tanto en mi rol como asambleísta
representando mi comunidad en El Bronx y
como presidente del Comité Demócrata de
ese condado, y este año mi participación tiene
un significado especial tras asumir mi nuevo
cargo. Como siempre, felicito a la comunidad
puertorriqueña por esta importante celebración
y por todas sus contribuciones a la ciudad, el
estado y el país. ¡Viva Puerto Rico!

in Washington Heights. I used to marvel
at it when I was growing up, and now as
the Commissioner of our city’s primary
capital construction agency, I am inspired
by it.”
Councilmember Mark Levine, who
serves as the Parks Committee Chair,
underscored the value of investing in
public spaces.
“Today we are showing what the city
is capable of doing when we dream big,”
said Levine, adding that reopening the
bridge and reconnecting communities was
“correcting a historic wrong.”

Visit Wave Hill on Sun., June 14th at 1:30
p.m. for an artist talk with Tamara Johnson and
Eto Otitigbe, who will discuss the installations
they have on view in the Sunroom Project Space.
Otitigbe creates mixed-media sculptural forms
which combine the man-made and the organic,
using engineered and repurposed materials.
Otitigbe’s multi-step process results in a small
series of relief panels and sculptures inspired
by organic patterns that reference natural
mathematical phenomena. In the Sun Porch,
Johnson installs a whimsical replica of the
stone balustrade bordering Wave Hill’s lower
lawn. Johnson’s installation calls attention to
the function of architecture to delineate space,
shift pathways and frame viewpoints.

Healing Right

A
lthough warmer weather
means more outdoor activities,
it can also mean more scrapes,
cuts and scratches. Whenever
your skin is injured — whether
by falling off of a bike or tripping
over a ball — a scar may form, as
this is a natural part of the healing
process. Fortunately, there are
things people can do at home to
help care for these types of minor
injuries and reduce the appearance
of scars.
“The appearance of a scar often depends
on how well your wound heals,” said
board-certified dermatologist Ellen
S. Marmur, MD, FAAD,
Associate
Clinical
Professor
of
Dermatology,
Icahn
School of Medicine at
Mount Sinai. “While
scars from surgery or
over joints like the knees
and elbows are hard to
avoid, scars caused by
minor cuts and scrapes
can become less noticeable by properly
treating your wound at home.”
To reduce the appearance of scars
caused by minor injuries, Dr. Marmur
recommends the following tips:
1.Always keep your cut, scrape or
other skin injury clean. Gently
wash the area with mild soap and
water to keep out germs and remove
debris.
2.To help the injured skin heal, use
petroleum jelly to keep the wound
moist. Petroleum jelly prevents the
wound from drying out and forming
a scab; wounds with scabs take
longer to heal. This will also help
prevent a scar from getting too large,
deep or itchy. As long as the wound
is cleaned daily, it is not necessary to
use anti-bacterial ointments.
3.After cleaning the wound and
applying petroleum jelly or
a
similar
ointment, cover
the skin with an
adhesive bandage.
For large scrapes, sores, burns or
persistent redness, it may be helpful
to use hydrogel or silicone gel
sheets.
4.
Change
your
bandage daily to
keep the wound
clean
while
it
on the package for changing the sheets.
5. If your injury requires stitches,
follow your doctor’s advice on how to
care for the wound and when to get
the stitches removed.This may help
minimize the appearance of a scar.
6. Apply sunscreen to the wound
after it has healed. Sun protection may
help reduce red or brown discoloration
and help the scar fade faster. Always
use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with
an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply
frequently.
“Although no scar can be completely
eliminated, most scars do fade over
time,” said Dr. Marmur. “If you’re
worried about the appearance of a scar,
see a board-certified dermatologist.

The case was settled in December 2014 and
called for children to be sent to ERs only in
the cases of a real medical emergency rather
than as a disciplinary or punitive measure.
Angela McBride, the DOE’s Director of
Evaluation and Eligibility at the Division of
Specialized Instruction and Student Support,
stressed the need to treat children with specific
disabilities in less restrictive environments.
“Children do better when they have positive
peers,” said McBride. Children benefited
from being in school and in proximity with
others that could act as their role models.
McBride also spoke about the referral
process for children with special needs. She
said that parents who thought their children
needed special education measures should
simply write a letter to school administrators
stating as much and seeking a formal
evaluation.
However, admitting and maintaining a
child in a special education class required
consent by both parents and school mental
health counselors.
“Any parent with a child in any special
education class has the right to revoke consent
at any time,” said McBride.
George Nodarse, Clinical Director of
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital’s Child Study
Center, highlighted the advantages of a
school-based mental health center.
It can provide on-site assessment and crisis
intervention, helping avoid delays in academic
development, he noted, and said that the onsite model had so far yielded positive results.
“In the group we treat, we see a decrease
in psychiatric hospitalization,” said Nodarse.
It was important to engage all parties, he
added.
“We should train our teachers to become
more aware,” he said.
And all agreed that, despite strides made in
destigmatizing struggles with mental health,
more needed to be done to provide sensitive
and targeted care.
“You have to have a cultural change,” said
Belkin.
For Camille Stanford, the change was a
result of intervention and engagement right
at school– and she wants the same for others.
She was grateful to be able to access
services at Hostos, and expressed the desire
to see similar services replicated for students
throughout the city.
“It is a program that should exist in schools
of all levels,” she said.
“Therapy worked and it’s still working.”

school administrators would look to remove
children who evinced disruptions or problems
from class and send them to local hospitals
for treatment, said Nelson Mar, Senior Staff
Attorney and Education Law Specialist at
Legal Services NYC- Bronx.
“Schools have been sending disruptive
students to hospital emergency rooms,” said
Mar.
But in 2013, Legal Services NYC and

seguro” o la sensación de seguridad.
“Sentir que el mundo es seguro es algo que te
puede dar resistencia para el resto de tu vida”,
dijo Belkin, quien recomienda que las escuelas
ofrezcan prácticas de relajación.
El concejal Andrew Cohen, quien también
es presidente del Comité de Salud Mental
del Concejo, argumentó que las escuelas
frecuentemente carecen de recursos.
“Hay una escasez tal”, dijo. “Realmente se
trata de enfocarnos en cómo hacer que la ciudad
lo logre con los recursos que tiene”.

de Salud Mental del Departamento de Educación

“Es importante que entendamos el idioma de
la escuela, la cultura”, dijo. “Queremos alinear
el programa de salud mental a la visión [de la
escuela] y su misión”.
Entender el entorno familiar de los niños y los
propios antecedentes personales de sus padres,
dijo, es otro componente relevante para abordar
los problemas de salud mental.
