National Life@50+ Event and Expo
Let’s celebrate all life has to offer @50+!
From May 14th through 16th, AARP will organize
the National Life@50+ Event and Expo in the
sunny and cosmopolitan city of Miami. We will
present multiple programs and activities all related

Williamsbridge has grown up.
At 47, Heastie is one of the most powerful
elected officials in the New York State – one
of the so-called “three men in a room” which
includes Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senate
Majority Leader Dean Skelos.
Heastie has been elected Speaker of the
New York State Assembly, where he has
represented the Bronx’s 83rd Assembly District
since 2000.
Moreover, Heastie, who had also previously
served as the Bronx County Democratic Chair,
made history as the first Bronxite and the first
African-American Speaker.
He was elected on Feb. 3rd, after former
Speaker Sheldon Silver, who had held the
post for over two decades, stepped down after
federal prosecutors charged him on counts
that involved political corruption.
And so, this past Sat., Apr. 25th, roughly
three months into his tenure at his new
post, and after having concluded the budget
process on Apr. 1st, it was finally time for a
homecoming celebration.
The Community Protestant Church on East
Gun Hill Road hosted the Speaker’s swearingin ceremony.
It was a full house.
“There is no place like home,” said Heastie,
standing before a room packed with hundreds
of supporters and attendees.

The 13th Annual CUNY Citizenship
NOW! Call-In was kicked off this past Mon.,
Apr. 27th at the City University of New
York’s (CUNY’s) Stella and Charles Guttman
Community College.
The hotline provides free and confidential
immigration and citizenship information.
Citizenship NOW!, supported by CUNY
and The Daily News,
is the largest program
of its kind in America.
Nearly
136,000
callers have been
assisted since the
program’s inception in
1997.
“While
Congress
and the courts debate
President
Obama’s
programs to provide
relief for undocumented
immigrants,
the
Citizenship
NOW!
Hotline is more important than ever,” said
Daily News President and Editor-in-Chief
Colin Myler. “We will help callers know if
they qualify, and if they do, how they can
prepare their documentation.”
“We are going to help thousands of
people,” said CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor
and Board Secretary Jay Hershenson, who
founded the initiative. “We do this because
we want to help.”
Professor Allan Wernick, who teaches at
Baruch College, has served as Director of
CUNY Citizenship Now! since its inception.
“Our goal is to empower immigrant New
Yorkers,” said Wernick. “Immigrants can’t
wait for Congress and the courts to find them
a path to citizenship. They need help now.”
Among the visitors stopping in on Monday
was Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo noted that he was the grandson
of Italian immigrants
who moved to New York
“penniless.”The state –
and the nation – would not
be as dynamic or diverse
without immigrants, he
argued.
“Immigration is a good
thing,” he insisted.
“40 percent of the
people in New York City
were foreign born, [and]
20 percent of the State,”
said Cuomo. “We made
New York the greatest
state on the planet by welcoming people and
using their strengths.”
“We don’t just welcome immigrants,”
he said. “We say, we will work with you in
partnership because we want you to do well,
because we believe that if you do well and if
you succeed, it’s not just good for your family,

May 1st, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Calls will be
answered in English and Spanish, as well
as Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Korean,

answering calls over the course of the week

On Monday, immigration paralegal Peter
Ramírez served as a hotline volunteer, as he
has done for the past 9 years.
“We have come very far with people’s
help,” said Ramírez, who is an immigrant
from Colombia. “It is my job to give back.”
Volunteers are prepared to respond to a
variety of questions, including eligibility for
President Obama’s Deferred Action program,
which is temporarily on hold.
“The questions are [often] about basic
eligibility for citizenship and where to go if
they need help,” explained volunteer Hasan
Shafiqullah, an immigration lawyer at the
Legal Aid Society.

The Fairy Godmother Initiative, in
partnership with South Bronx NeON, will
host its 8th Annual Prom Dress Boutique
event on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 10
a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The program looks to help
lessen the burden and cost of attending prom
by providing high school girls free prom

l deseo natural de todo padre es
tener un bebé saludable. Pero,
desafortunadamente, no siempre sucede.
Aproximadamente 120,000 bebés en Estados
Unidos nacen con defectos cada año, según la
Red Nacional de Prevención de los Defectos de
Nacimiento, una organización que promueve la
educación y el alcance comunitario. Los defectos
de nacimiento pueden afectar a cualquier familia,
independientemente de su raza, país de origen,

of Cram
Don’t get crammed.
Many New York cell phone customers
may be eligible to receive up to hundreds of
dollars each in refunds due to a multi-million
dollar Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
settlement with major wireless carriers, who have
been investigated for unfair billing practices.
But many consumers are unaware of their
entitled refunds – and the stated deadlines to file
a claim are looming.
In November 2013, after the
FTC became involved, all major
cell phone carriers agreed to stop
a billing practice that allowed
third parties to bill customers with
excessive fees for ringtones, daily
horoscopes, and other extraneous
cellular subscriptions; the practice
is known as ‘cramming.’
U.S. Senator Charles E.
Schumer said consumers may have been billed
hundreds of millions of dollars per year because
of hidden and multiple $9.99/month charges for
extraneous subscriptions.
“I’m dialing up the FTC today urging them to
provide consumers with more than just a busy
signal, after being duped by their major wireless
carriers. Consumers deserve ample opportunity
to submit for these FTC settlement funds,” said
Schumer. “The FTC should better publicize the
practice of cramming and explain how consumers
can apply for their well-deserved refunds.”
According to the FCC, cramming is the illegal

act of placing unauthorized charges on one’s
wireless telephone bill. The FCC estimates
that cramming has harmed tens of millions of
American households. When unauthorized,
cramming may include charges for services
disguised as: service fees, service charges, other
fees, membership, etc. Cramming charges may
have been added to telephone bills every month
without a clear explanation of the services
provided. Unauthorized charges for ringtones,
cell phone wallpaper, premium
text messages, celebrity gossip or
daily horoscopes may actually be
cramming.
AT&T has agreed to settle
allegations of cramming for current
and former AT&T customers who
paid for unauthorized third-party
charges after January 1, 2009. The
efforts between AT&T and the FTC
have resulted in a $105 million
settlement. The last day to file a claim
for AT&T is May 1, 2015.
T-Mobile has also agreed to settle allegations
of cramming, paying at least $90 million. The
deadline to file a claim for T-Mobile is June
30, 2015. Other major carriers like Verizon and
Sprint are in talks right now with the FTC on
reaching a settlement.

Ensuring Affordable Housing

holding onto or maintaining rentstabilized and rent-controlled
apartments. Succession rights are
in place to ensure just that. But
more and more, landlords are not
following the rules to keep families
in their homes.

Nueva York les permite a los inquilinos
actuales y a sus familiares renovar sus contratos
de alquiler estabilizado o estar protegidos
de ser desalojados de un apartamento con
alquiler controlado si un familiar muere o deja el
apartamento. Aunque la definición y relación de
los “familiares” puede variar en las situaciones
de sucesión de alquiler, lo que sí es claro es
que no se han implementado protecciones
para asegurar que los derechos de sucesión se
apliquen apropiadamente. El problema es que un
sin número de solicitudes para obtener derechos
de sucesión se someten diariamente, pero no se
les da el seguimiento apropiado o se reportan a
pesar de su alta importancia.
Mi objetivo es abordar este problema
presentando nueva legislación que fortalecerá
la aplicación de las leyes de sucesión actuales y
harán el proceso más transparente. Bajo la ley
actual, los caseros pueden rechazar la solicitud
para derechos de sucesión sin tener que proveer
una razón específica al respecto.
Con mi legislación, el Proyecto de Ley de la
Asamblea A.6974, propongo que trabajemos
para responsabilizar a los caseros y requerirles

para que podamos rectificar este problema.

I am seeking to address
this problem by introducing new
legislation that will enforce current
succession rights laws and make
the process more transparent.
Under current law, landlords
can reject an application for succession rights
without even having to provide a specific
reason for this rejection.
Under my new bill, Assembly
Bill A. 6974, I propose that we work
to hold landlords more accountable
and require them to provide
essential data to HCR so that we
can rectify this problem. Too often,
laws need to be updated, specifically
laws directed at the well-being
of housing our community. With
new data, we can put in place clear, rational
solutions that can find the appropriate balance
between the rights of tenants and landlords.

continue to be, a major concern for all Bronx
families unless we work towards addressing
these issues today.

livia Techuatl was hot.
The mother of three recently visited
the Mott Haven branch of the New York
Public Library (NYPL) and borrowed a hot
spot device. “This helps my family,” said Techuatl. “My
children use it to do research.”
Her family was taking part in the NYPL’s
wi-fi lending pilot program, the Library
Hot Spot, now in its second stage. At Mott
Haven, 15 families with children, including
Techuatl’s, have already received their
devices.
Since December 2014, NYPL has been
lending Wi-Fi hot spots to patrons to address
the needs of the nearly 3 million New Yorkers
without access to broadband internet at
home. Initially, the only eligible patrons were
those enrolled in one of the Library’s free
educational programs – or who had children
enrolled in the same.
But now, in the second round of lending,
the program’s eligibility has expanded to
include any patrons over the age of 18 with a
fine-free library card. They will be able now
to borrow a device for up to a year at one of 11

event” at a branch, during which patrons
will receive information such as how to use
the devices. Lending events are scheduled
through May 9, and it is expected that NYPL
will expand the number of sites offering the
program over the summer.
“Just like we lend out books, we lend out
hot spots,” said NYPL President Tony Marx. branches located within “high needs” areas.
With lending events scheduled through
May 9th, the city’s three library systems,
which include NYPL, the Brooklyn Public
Library and the Queens Borough Public
Library, plan on distributing 10,000 hot spot
devices by the end of the year.
So far, about 2,600 devices have been
borrowed.
“Just like we lend out books, we lend out
hot spots,” explained NYPL President Tony
Marx. To kick off the second phase of the
initiative, Marx was joined by City Council
Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYPL
officials and local residents at the Mott Haven
branch on Thurs., Apr. 23rd.
The Speaker noted that expanded access
was imperative for families in need, as it leads
to greater academic and career opportunities,
as well as yielding more access to information,
research and communication.
“The goal simply is to provide more
Internet access to those who don’t have it,”
said the Speaker. “Broadband access should
no longer be a luxury.”

hoda and Milton Schloss were
a couple – on a date.
“We come here every year,” explained
Rhoda.
The duo, residents of Pelham Parkway
in the Bronx, had arrived at New YorkPresbyterian’s Allen Hospital on Tues., Apr.
14th for its Annual Spring Health Fair.
The fair is organized specifically to address
the needs of senior residents from Northern
Manhattan and the Bronx, such as Rhoda
and Milton. It includes free health screenings
for blood pressure, posture and balance; grip
measurement; hearing; and pulse oximetry.

Hundreds of seniors took part in the two
hour fair.
“The community responds,” observed
Kevin F. Curtin, Allen’s Vice President of
Operations. “The fair seems to grow every
single year.”
The spring event is one of two annual fairs
held by Allen Hospital and is designed to
assist seniors in keeping their health in check.
Without having to make a doctor’s
appointment, elder seniors have access to
multiple health screenings, as administered at

Time Warner Cable (TWC) has announced that all calls placed
by its Home Phone and Business Services customers to landline
and mobile numbers in Nepal will be free through May 25, 2015,
and is retroactive for all calls placed since April 25.
TWC’s Home Phone National plan also provides free, unlimited
calling to neighboring countries China and India, which were
also impacted by the earthquake.
“Our thoughts are with those who have loved ones in Nepal and surrounding areas impacted by the
devastating earthquake on April 25,” said Time Warner Cable chairman Rob Marcus in a statement. “Being
able to connect with family and friends is crucial during this time and, we hope, will bring some comfort
and peace of mind.”
The United Nations estimates that at least 8 million people have been affected by the earthquake, and the
official death toll from the 7.8-magnitude quake is at 5,000 and could reach 10,000.

is again on the search for 24
college-bound teens from South
Bronx schools to participate in
the History Makers Scholars
program this summer at Fordham
University.
The five-week summer program, which is
held each year, will last from June 30 to July
31, and will center on Fordham’s Rose Hill
campus at 441 East Fordham Road.
History Makers is a collaboration of
BronxWorks’ Center for Achieving Future
Education (CAFÉ) and Fordham’s Dorothy
Day Center for Service and Justice, and
is enabled by a grant from the Teagle
Foundation.
The History Makers Scholars will be
assigned independent research projects
related to the African-American experience
in the Bronx, leading up to papers that will
be presented at a graduation assembly at the
end of the program, said Jean-Pierre LaCour,
coordinator of CAFÉ and organizer of
History Makers. In addition to proving they
can conduct “college-level history research
beyond the textbook,” participants will also
gain familiarity with the routines of campus
life applicable to any college they attend, he
noted.

been funded with donations from a host
of organizations, including a $1 million
donation from Google, a $500,000 grant from
the Knight News Challenge, an initiative of
the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation,
Open Society Foundations, and Robin Hood
Foundation. “Thousands of families in my district and
across the city will be able to access a vital
resource to improve their quality of life, job
opportunities and educational growth,” said
the Speaker. “I’m proud of this collective
achievement and look forward to finding
even more ways to make internet access as
universally available as possible.”
Present also at the launch was Google
External Affairs Director William Floyd, who
highlighted the shared goals of the institutions
involved.

Nearly 3 million New Yorkers have not
access to broadband Internet at home, and
the Mott Haven community is expected to

Take in the artistry of saints at the Pregones
Theatre on Sat., May 2nd, with Hagiografías
(Hagiographies). Hagiografías is a collage
of theatrical vignettes exploring the notions
of sainthood. Among the pieces on display
are two pilgrims wait for a train in a ghost
station in the Puerto Rico of the 1940´s and
a vampire in a barbershop turns out to be
a graffitero that kills and resurrects images of
saints on the streets by painting over them in
New York City.
Hagiografías moves between English
and Spanish (as well as other real languages
and invented ones) as the intention is to be
experienced and understood in different
ways, depending on your relationship with
these languages spoken and unspoken.
Hagiografías is a workshop production of
Casa Cruz de la Luna Theatre Company as

daughter, sister, mother of
three beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer and
motivator,” says contributor
Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican
descent, as she continues to
explore her hometown.
Here is her latest installment.
I have always been fascinated with the
massive Beaux-Arts building known as the
Old Courthouse, which is located on streets
of East 161st Street, between Brook and
Third Avenues.
As a teenager, I worked on Third Avenue
and East 152nd Street. I’d often walk over
to admire the building. Years later, a friend
opened up a business on Third Avenue and
East 159th Street, and then I would also
head over to check the building out.
At times, its facade was strewn with
graffiti, and for almost four decades, it has
been closed to the public.
Two months ago, I was invited to a
community input meeting at the courthouse.
No Longer Empty, a not-for-profit whose
mission is to “activate public engagement
with contemporary art through curated,
community-responsive exhibitions and
education programs that revive underutilized
properties,” hosted the meeting.
The group would be occupying the old
Courthouse for its exhibition “When You
Cut Into the Present the Future Leaks Out,”
(a quote from American novelist William
Burroughs), and had helped organize the
meeting to receive community input.
I was not sure what to expect, but
was very excited about having access to
the building. A group of over 50 people
attended, including representatives of
community-based organizations, elected
officials’ offices, community gardens and
schools. There were also local residents and
artists.
During the meeting, attendees shared
stories and memories of the building. Artists
asked questions and many stayed for hours
brainstorming programming ideas. I listened
attentively, glad to be present for such an
amazing moment in time.
The opening reception on Apr. 23rd was
well attended with hundreds flocking to the
Courthouse.
Though I’ve been fortunate to be exposed
to art throughout my life, I have not always
understood it. This exhibit, however, had
a number of installations that I found
thought-provoking and compelling. Among
some of my favorite pieces was a 12 foot
long, 3-panel, plywood installation of the
Bronx River by Melissa Calderon and the
reconstructed timeline of the Lindbergh
kidnapping by Skowmon Hastanan.
The building has tremendous history
and is an architectural gem. Marble floors,
ornamental designs, and exposed intricate
brick patterns are just a few of the many
glimpses into the

hija, hermana, madre de
tres hermosos bebés del Bronx,
fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice la colaboradora Nilka
Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña, mientras continúa
explorando su barrio natal.

Siempre he estado fascinada con la enorme
Corte Vieja de arquitectura Beaux-Arts, que

Turning serious, the Governor said that
while he had always thought highly of Heastie
the Assemblymember, it was his recent turn
as Speaker while passing the state’s roughly
$150 billion budget that had thoroughly
impressed him.
He specifically praised Heastie’s skills as a
negotiator. Getting the two houses to agree on
funding issues, assured Cuomo, was never an
easy task.
“Whatever one house wants the other
hates,” said the Governor. “It is like
negotiating holidays with your in-laws.”
And he noted that the borough’s residents
would be well served by having one of their
own in power.
“He is in a position to do good for you,”
said Cuomo, to cheers.
The Church is located
on East Gun Hill Road.
The Speaker’s fellow elected officials from
the borough lavished their own praise.
“The Bronx has two speakers,” said a proud
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito,
whose district spans parts of the South Bronx.

had, despite the many challenges, proven to
be the best time of his life. He was pleased,
he said, by the work he and his colleagues in
government had accomplished thus far.
“I think this is the finest budget we [have]
put together in the State of New York in 15
years,” said the Speaker.

That note of support was echoed by Church
Pastor Calvin Owens. “Don’t forget to stop by here every now
and then,” he reminded Heastie.
“These folks will have your back,” added
Public Advocate James, as she surveyed the
pews. “Make sure you always come home.”
As she watched, Elva Heastie Gamble
could not contain her marvel.
The Speaker’s aunt explained that her
nephew was the youngest grandson of Edward
Heastie, an immigrant of the Bahamas.
“Little Carl had the least of the 10
grandchildren,” said the spry 89-year-old.
“But look at him now. I am just blown away.”

She said that some hearing deterioration
was common in older adults. Many of the
patients she monitored suffered from a
condition called tinnitus, caused by noise
exposure. The symptoms are sporadic buzzing
and hissing in the ear.
“80 percent of the older population has
it,” said Ronan. If the problem persists for a
prolonged period of time, it is recommended
that treatment be sought.
Attendee Betty Dennis took full advantage
of the free screenings and services. She had
her blood pressure screened, received Reiki
treatment, and underwent a hearing test.
After the latter examination, she was
advised to follow up.
“They told me to see a doctor to remove the
wax,” said the 77-year-old.
Several more events for seniors are
scheduled in the near future at Allen. Among
them is the highly expected Talent Show,
which is to be held on Fri., May 1st.
Now in its second year, the event
showcases the talents of seniors and hospital
administrators and staff. Last year, it included
dancers, singers, and musicians, among other
performers.
And, based on reports, the highlight of last
year’s show was an 84-year-old male bellydancer, who performed a memorable number.
To the delight of all, he has already confirmed
his participation this year.
Curtin, who has served as Vice President
since 2010, pledged not to miss the show.
Moreover, while he did not say whether
he’d perform, he did day he would also be
attending all future shows.
“I will carve out time of my schedule every
single year,” he promised.

Designate your donation. Find out what
percentage of your donation will directly go
toward the cause as opposed to administrative
costs. Ask the charity whether you can
designate your donation to a specific effort
rather than a general contribution fund.
Resist high-pressure tactics. Watch
out for direct e-mails from “victims” and
solicitors who employ heart-wrenching
stories, insisting that you donate immediately.
It is strongly advised not to give money over
the phone to unsolicited telemarketers, and
instead ask the caller to send written materials
about the charity.
Do not disclose personal or financial
information. Never give your Social Security
number, credit card or debit card number or
other personal identifying information in
response to an unsolicited charitable request.
Avoid giving cash. Give your contribution
by check or credit card to ensure that you have

check that the website is secure and that your
computer is equipped with the latest anti-virus
