Hedging their bets

K
irssy Martínez was 14 when
she moved to New York from
the Dominican Republic.
When she graduated high school in 2005,
she lacked both the financial resources to
pursue higher education and the legal status
to qualify for financial aid.
But in 2012, things took a positive turn.
With an executive order from President
Obama, she became eligible for DACA
(Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
The federal program allows for a deferral
in removal status for up to two years for
undocumented persons brought to the United
States before their 16th birthdays.
While it does not provide lawful status,
DACA would allow Martínez to stay in the
country temporarily and makes her eligible
for work authorization.
It also made her eligible for TheDream.
US Scholarship, a multimillion dollar
National Scholarship Fund for DREAMers,
as those undocumented youths who seek
higher education opportunities often refer to
themselves.
The TheDream.US Scholarship Fund
was created to help immigrant youth with
DACA or TPS (Temporary
Protected Status), awarding
first-time college students
or
community
college
graduates across the nation
up to $25,000 in scholarship
funding to achieve higher
education.
“A DREAMer is someone
who expects changes and has
hopes. We dream of going to
college,” said Martínez.
She was a scholarship
recipient in 2013 – one of
the first 30 City University of
New York (CUNY) students to
receive the scholarship that year.
Only three of CUNY’s
community colleges were part of
the TheDream.US program then.
This past Tues., May 5th at CUNY’s
Graduate Center, Martinez spoke as 2015
Bronx Community College valedictorian at a
reception for the new recipients of TheDream.

“The sky is the limit, education is the
vehicle,” she said.
Shortly after his arrival in June 2014, CUNY
Chancellor James B. Milliken made it a priority
to expand the scholarship’s reach; the program
was soon extended to all CUNY schools. “Soon as it was announced that I’d be

foundation and what it was doing around the
country,” recalled the Chancellor, referring to
The Dream.US co-founder Don Graham.
“[Today], CUNY is the #1 university in
the country in terms of applicants [and] #1 in
the country in terms of scholarship winners –
over 10 times more scholarship winners this
year than when we sat and spoke about this a
year ago,” he noted.
The 2014 scholarship winners were
announced last December. 50 percent of the
new scholarships – a total of 242 – went to
students from CUNY.
The selection process was described as
rigorous – and the rewards great.
In addition to the funding, students will
receive consistent support from designated
advisors, and participate in communitybuilding activities with other scholars. “I could not be prouder to be Chancellor
of the university where you will be students,”
said Milliken.
He was not alone in his enthusiasm.
Filled with beaming, sometimes tearful
parents and excited students, the event was
charged with emotion.

The renovation of Van
Nest Park, which is in the
theme of a 19th century
railroad, includes new play
equipment, a spray shower,
swings, drinking fountain, benches,
new painted game lines, and
landscaping. Funding for this $1.35
million project was allocated by
Councilmembers Torres and Vacca
and Bronx Borough President Díaz
Jr.
Van Nest Park takes its name from the
Van Nest Railroad Station, which served
the community in the late 19th century. The
New York, New Haven, Hartford Railroad
Company established the railroad station
in the neighborhood even before there was
a settlement. The station was named by

Abraham Reynier Van Nest, the director
of the New York, New Haven, Hartford
Railroad, in honor of his father, Reynier Van
Nest, a successful saddle maker. The Van Nest
family traces its roots to Pieter Pietersen Van
Nest, who came from the Netherlands in 1647
to settle in the young Dutch colony.

T
“She has matured at a young
age,” says Jesus Ares of
his daughter Jeralene.
he Ares family is going against
the odds.
But they’re skipping the scratch-off tickets.
Instead, the family is preparing to travel to
New York from Rhode Island to ensure that
Jeralene is granted a greater shot of success at
finding a match.
The 11-year-old is battling sickle cell
anemia – and she needs a stem cell transplant.
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited cell
disorder that affects red blood cells.
Jeralene was diagnosed at birth, and her
first flare-up occurred when she was only
eight months old. Though medication has
helped to ease her pain, Jeralene has already
been hospitalized numerous times.
This Sat., May 16th, the New York Blood
Center will host a blood and bone marrow
registry drive in New York for the Blessed
Sacrament School sixth grader, who will
attend in person together with family
members.
Her best bet is a Hispanic donor.
“We need help to fight this disease that
mostly affects people of color,” explains
Jesús Ares, Jeralene’s father. Both Jeralene’s
parents are Hispanic, of Dominican and
Puerto Rican descent.
And though over 100 donors participated in

Prep program for Summer 2015 (mid-June
to the end of July) are now being accepted.
The organization seeks to put together a
group of 20 female students ages 18-24 who
have either a high school diploma or a GED/
TASC/high school equivalency diploma,
who want to attend CUNY in fall 2015. Some stipend support is available via this
scholarship.
The content of Grace Outreach’s College
Prep program is to give the students intensive
instruction to prepare for the COMPASS/
remedial exams at CUNY, and to enter
CUNY in Fall 2015.
Students who begin their college work

with zero or only one remedial class
have a much better chance statistically of
graduating within 3 years for an associate’s
degree. Grace Outreach operates this special
summer program as a member of the Bronx
Opportunity Network (BON) consortium.

an earlier drive in Rhode Island, her family
has yet to find a match for Jeralene, whose
best chance with a donor with a similar ethnic
background.
But Latinos and other ethnic minorities
usually have difficulty finding a match
because people of color are underrepresented
in the registry.
It is why Jeralene and her family are
traveling to New York, home to a large Latino
population, including Jeralene’s extended
family, which resides throughout the Bronx
and Northern Manhattan.
Ares explained that his daughter was
currently taking oral medication, without
which it would be difficult for her to get by.
“She loves her classes and enjoys learning
new things,” reports her father. “Her illness is
being controlled with medication, yes. [But]
it prevents her from enjoying herself and
activities as other children would.”
The concern is always that a new flare-up,
which can be incredibly painful and often
leads to hospitalization, is just a moment
away.

Artist-Specific Healthcare Program Enters
New Era at Lincoln Medical Center

ome of the most vulnerable
patients, principally
children and those battling
behavioral health issues,
who have been hospitalized
at Lincoln Medical Center
over the last three years, have
been privy to the creative
work of artists from multiple
disciplines and cultural
backgrounds.
Musicians playing soft melodies
in waiting room areas… Poets,
writers and actors reading out-loud
to patients… Painters creating and
restoring murals in public spaces…
Teaching artists doing arts and
crafts with children... Performers
entertaining listeners at events…
These are some examples of how
artists are helping to transform the
patient experience at Lincoln.
This is all due to the Lincoln Art
Exchange, an artist-specific healthcare
program that allows eligible NYC-based
artists to exchange their creative services
for comprehensive healthcare. For every
hour of creative service contributed,
qualifying artists receive 40 credits,
which is equivalent to 40 dollars, and
is redeemable for healthcare services at
Lincoln.
More than 50 artists have participated
in the barter-style initiative since it was
launched in January 2012. Following the
enactment of the Affordable Care Act
(ACA), the Art Exchange Program entered
into a new phase serving those not covered
by the Federal legislation.
ACA was meant to make healthcare
coverage accessible to everyone. But
not all individuals benefit, including
undocumented immigrants and those who
are not eligible for Medicaid and have
opted not to purchase insurance through
the marketplace. So rather than making
the Art Exchange Program obsolete, the
Affordable Care Act has helped narrow its

“Before joining the
Art Exchange Program, I dealt with my
health by avoidance”, says musician Mark
Ackerman, 59, who participated in Phase
I. “The initiative helped me pay for my
medical bills, and it also introduced me to
behavioral health and the healing power of
music and art”.

del Lincoln (Lincoln Art
Exchange), un programa
de salud que permite a los

T
hey want to see their way clear.
New York City bus operators and advocates
gathered recently to address safety concerns,
blind spots, and Vision Zero.
Members of Amalgamated Transit Union
(ATU), the largest labor union of transit
and allied workers in the United States and
Canada, held a meeting with Transit Union
Workers Local 100 (TWU) members, to
discuss some of the dangers faced on – and
off – the road.
“The buses that we operate come with a
variety of blind spots,” said J.P. Patafio, TWU
Surface Vice President.
During his remarks, he and others broadcast
large-scale images, diagrams, and videos to
underscore their claims that drivers’ vision is
obscured by the fleet’s current design.
A primary focus of the discussion on Apr.
22nd at the Woolworth Tower Kitchen was
the current design of the driver’s side-view
mirror, which can be over 14 inches wide,
and the pillar upon which it rests. In contrast,
buses designed in the 1950’s and 1960’s used
different front window designs with thinner
pillars and greater space between side mirrors.
These blind spots, said Patafio,
compromises drivers’ ability to operate their
buses safely, increases the likelihood of
traffic accidents – and places them at risk of
incarceration under Vision Zero.

injury, the driver is subject to a $250 fine and
30 days in jail.
Since the enactment of the socalled “Right of Way” law on
Aug. 22nd 2014, 22 people have
been arrested for the misdemeanor
failure to yield.
Just over a quarter of those
arrested thus far have been MTA
bus operators.
Bus operators and their
advocates have been vocal in their opposition
to the law, charging that it unfairly targets
them and criminalizes their work.
“We support the goals of Vision Zero, that
being safer streets,” said TWU Local 100
President John Samuelsen. “But bus operation
must not be criminalized. Subjecting bus
operators to undeserved arrests does not solve
the issue of dangerous hit-and-run driving.”
“There is a blind spot in the current Vision
Zero,” argued Larry Hanley, International
President of ATU. “The Council didn’t
deliberate sufficiently when making this

Fierce in the FORCE
E
ver since finding out she had
lung cancer eight years ago,
Nancy Vandespool wasn’t sure
anybody would understand her
diagnosis.
The three-mile LUNG FORCE Walk has
changed that.
Now, Vandespool says she feels like she is
part of something larger.
”It gets lonely; you think there is nobody out
there that knows what you’re going through,”
says Vandespool, of Puerto Rican descent. “I
wasn’t able to connect with anyone, so this
walk means a lot to me.”
Vandespool will participate in the Lung
Association’s LUNG FORCE Walk in New
York City on Saturday, May 16 at Pier 16,
South Street Seaport.
It has been a long journey.
Vandespool went to the doctor with severe
coughing and back pain. After initially
suspecting kidney stones, her doctors
conducted a CT-scan and delivered the news
she had lung cancer.
“I couldn’t believe what they were telling
me,” she recalls.
“I never smoked a day in my life.”
Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of
women, killing almost twice as many women
as any other cancer. In fact, statistics show that
fewer than half of all women diagnosed with
lung cancer survive one year after diagnosis.

LUNG FORCE is a national health
education movement that seeks to unite
women to combat lung cancer and to advocate
for lung health.
“The Lung Association is honored to
have Nancy participating in our first LUNG
FORCE Walk in New York City,” said Jeff
Seyler, CEO and President of the American
Lung Association of the Northeast. “Nobody
deserves lung cancer, but it’s important for the
public to understand that you don’t have to
smoke to get the disease. Stories like Nancy’s
are what the LUNG FORCE campaign is all
about. The Lung Association is dedicated to
increasing awareness and advocacy for lung
cancer among women. We wish Nancy the
best in her recovery and hope to see her at
our future LUNG FORCE Walks.”
In remission for four years, Vandespool is
hoping her story will inspire others to learn
more about lung cancer, especially those in
the Hispanic community.
“Coming to this country when I was 26
years old from Puerto Rico, I barely knew
the language, let alone anything about lung
cancer,” she said. “Now, I hope other Spanishspeaking people will want to learn more about
this and get involved. A lot of times we don’t
know where to go and now we have something
to learn from.”
Vandespool is looking forward to getting
out to walk – and getting out the word to
others.
“Something so simple changed my life,”
she says.

esde que descubrió hace ocho
años atrás que tenía cáncer en el
pulmón, Nancy Vandespool no estaba
segura que alguien entendería su
diagnóstico.
Pero con la Caminata Fuerza Pulmonar de
tres millas, Vandespool ha sentido que tiene algo
con lo cual conectarse.
“Se siente solo, piensas que allá afuera no hay
nadie que sabe por lo que estás pasando”, dijo
Vandespool, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
“No podía conectar con nadie, así es que esta
caminata significa mucho para mí”.
Vandespool participará en la Caminata Fuerza
Pulmonar de la Asociación de Pulmones en
la ciudad de Nueva York, el 16 de mayo en el
Muelle 16, en la Calle South Seaport.
Ha sido un largo viaje.
Vandespool fue al doctor con tos severa
y dolor en la espalda. Luego de inicialmente
sospechar de piedra en los riñones, sus doctores
le practicaron un CT-Scan y le dieron la noticia
de que tenía cáncer en los pulmones.
“No podía creer lo que me estaban diciendo”,
recuerda.
“Nunca fumé en mi vida”.
El cáncer en los pulmones es el asesino
número uno en las mujeres, matando a casi dos
veces más mujeres que cualquier otro cáncer.
De hecho, las estadísticas muestran que menos
de la mitad de las mujeres diagnosticadas con
cáncer en el pulmón sobreviven un año después
del diagnóstico.
Fuerza Pulmonar es un movimiento nacional
de educación de la salud con la singular misión
de unir a las mujeres a sostenerse juntas contra
el cáncer del pulmón y por la salud del
pulmón.
“La Asociación Pulmonar está honrada
de tener a Nancy participando en nuestra
primera Caminata Fuerza Pulmonar
en la ciudad de Nueva York”, dijo Jeff
Seyler, CEO y presidente de la Asociación

irssy Martínez tenía 14 años cuando
se mudó a Nueva York desde la
República Dominicana.
Cuando se graduó de la escuela preparatoria
en 2005, carecía de los recursos financieros para
continuar con su educación superior, además del
estatus legal para calificar para ayuda financiera.
“No podría estar más orgulloso”, dijo el
canciller de CUNY James B. Milliken.
Pero en 2012 las cosas tomaron un giro
positivo.
Con una orden ejecutiva del presidente
Obama, se convirtió en elegible para DACA
(Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia).
El programa federal permite un aplazamiento
en el estado de eliminación para un máximo de
dos años para los indocumentados traídos a los
Estados Unidos antes de su cumpleaños 16°.
Si bien no proporciona estatus legal, DACA
le permitiría a Martínez permanecer en el país
de manera temporal y la hace elegible para un
permiso de trabajo.
También la hizo elegible para la beca
TheDream.US, un fondo nacional multimillonario
de becas para los DREAMers, como esos
jóvenes indocumentados que buscan
oportunidades de educación superior a

aged 50-plus in the five boroughs, found
that identity theft or credit card fraud had
impacted roughly one-fifth to one-fourth of
voters in the same age demographic.
AARP also surveyed older New York
voters on whether they were concerned about
being victims of fraud and if so, which kinds
of frauds they were concerned about the most.
An overwhelming number of respondents
(75 percent) said they were most worried
about identity theft, and Hispanics evinced
the most concern.
“84 percent of Hispanic voters age 50 and
over said identity theft was their top concern

a familia Ares va en contra de las

Pero evitan los billetes raspaditos.
En lugar de ello, la familia se prepara
para viajar a Nueva York desde Rhode
Island para asegurar que Jeralene tenga una
mayor oportunidad de éxito en encontrar una
coincidencia.
La niña de 11 años de edad lucha contra la
anemia de células falciformes y necesita un
trasplante de células madre.
La anemia de células falciformes es un
trastorno hereditario que afecta las células de los
glóbulos rojos.
Jeralene fue diagnosticada al nacer y su
primer brote ocurrió cuando tenía tan sólo ocho
meses de edad. Aunque los medicamentos han
ayudado a aliviar su dolor, Jeralene ya ha sido

Este sábado 16 mayo, el Centro de Sangre

registro de sangre y médula ósea en Nueva York
para la estudiante de sexto grado de la escuela
del Santísimo Sacramento, quien asistirá en
persona junto con familiares.

“Necesitamos ayuda para luchar contra esta
enfermedad que afecta principalmente a las
personas de color”, explica Jesús Ares, padre de
Jeralene. Los padres de Jeralene son hispanos,
de ascendencia dominicana y puertorriqueña.

Y a pesar de que más de 100 donantes
participaron en una campaña previa en Rhode
Island, su familia todavía tiene que encontrar
una coincidencia para Jeralene, cuya mejor
oportunidad es un donante con antecedentes
étnicos similares.
Pero los latinos y otras minorías étnicas suelen
tener dificultades para encontrar una coincidencia
porque la gente de color está sub representada
en el registro.
Es por eso que Jeralene y su familia viajarán a
Nueva York, hogar de una gran población latina,

Manna’s Restaurant, which was
established in 1984, offers the good stuff.
The eatery at the 2331 Frederick
Douglas location features a large selfserve soul food and salad bar.
It is one of 7 Manna’s Restaurants
throughout the city, with 4 in Harlem and
3 in Brooklyn.
The buffet’s trays are filled with soul
staples such as mac and cheese, collard
greens, fried chicken, ribs, pig feet,
candied yams, and rice and beans.
“[People] come here for the variety and
the customer service,” explained manager
Wayne Zanders, who has worked at
Manna’s for 4 years.
The eatery is also a haven for
vegetarians, with an abundant selection of
salads, grilled vegetables and fresh pastas.
There is also a separate fish and chips
section, where patrons can choose from
fried whiting fish sandwiches and platters
of shrimp and chips, and even oysters and
chips.
For Mike Thompson, who has been
a regular since 2009, it is all about the
seafood.
Manna’s is where he takes his lunch
break when doing work in the city.

“It is a pleasant place,”
said David Murray.
“Friday is a good day. They have a lot of
fish,” explained Thompson, with his favorite
fish sandwich in one hand, and a can of ginger
ale in the other.
He was far from alone.
“[People] come from all over,” explained
Zanders. “We have a lot of regulars from
within the community, and tourists too.”
Oliver Craig and his son, Conor, were the
latter. The duo was visiting from London and,
after touring the Apollo Theater nearby, they
had chosen Manna’s for their last meal in the
Big Apple.
Their tour director at the theater had
suggested Manna’s, and they were glad for
the recommendation.
“The food is very good,” reported Conor
as he savored a full plate with yellow rice,
broccoli and peppers.
Derrick Marcelle is a die-hard regular. He
frequents the restaurant about 5 to 6 times per
week, sometimes on his own, sometimes with
friends.
“It is like a home-cooked meal,” said
Marcelle, digging into his lunch of baked
chicken, collards, rice and corn bread.
David Murray’s perspective is as unique as
are his many roles at Manna’s. A Harlemite
through and through, Murray was born and
raised in the neighborhood and now serves
as one of one of the kitchen’s cooks. He also
bakes, creating sweet confections such as the
best-selling carrot and red velvet cakes, as
well as mini sweet potato pies.
“The morale is always high here. Customers
come in and enjoy,” he said. “It is a pleasant
place.”

Pershing Square Foundation and one of
the most famous hedge-fund activists in
the world, stepped to the microphone, the
intensity only grew.
The Pershing Square Foundation had
already provided $200,000 to CUNY for the
Dreamers Club, which provides personal
and professional development to students,
and had donated a separate $10 million
grant to the scholarship fund.
Ackman, widely known for his aggressive
stance against the supplement company
Herbalife, which he has labeled a pyramid
scheme, recalled the journey of Abraham
Dexman, his great-grandfather.

“Because New York City is very diverse,
our blood drive has to also be diverse,” said
Patrick Foley, Account Manager at the New
York Blood Center.
Foley is hoping to register at least 100
people during the drive, preferably many
more.
“When it comes to finding a bone marrow
match, it has to be a more precise match, not
simply the blood type,” he said, urging donors
of all ethnicities to stop by. “You never know.”
The Ares family is determined to continue
their search, and they are planning to conduct
further drives, including one in Puerto Rico.
Her father says the family is committed to
remaining optimistic.
“We continue learning to deal with her
condition on a daily basis,” he remarked.
Despite the education the family has
acquired over the years during numerous
doctors’ visits, in managing health crises,
monitoring medication and arranging for new
drives, it is Jeralene to whom they all look to
first – for information and for inspiration.
“She has a great level of understanding,”
says Ares of the young girl who loves to
dance and play basketball. “She has matured
at a young age. We have to prepare ourselves
mentally and physically to help her.”

But he was hopeful that they could identify

“People with this disease don’t live more
than 25 or 30 years,” he said. “A transplant

In a recent report to NBC 10 News in
Rhode Island, Dr. Carolyn Young of the
Rhode Island Blood Center explained more
about the disease.
“These red cells are in the shape of a
sickle,” said Dr. Young. “Because they’re in
the shape of a sickle, they’re not able to get
through the blood vessels well and they get
stuck. When they get stuck, the cells behind
them can’t get through, so nothing can get
through, and what’s in front of them isn’t able
to get oxygen.”

added Ares. “It is hard.”

TWU, which represents 38,000 active
members, has sought to have the law amended
in the City Council and has also sued the de
Blasio administration, claiming the law is
unconstitutionally vague.
During their presentation, advocates also
noted that traffic patterns and congestion as
well as pedestrians who take undue risks, play
a role in accidents.
“I had to make turns in the most congested
parts of the city,” said Patafio. “Pedestrians
cross when they want to cross.”
In addition, those present called on the New
York Transit Authority (NYTA) to fix the
blind spots that currently exist so as to allow
for full visibility, and/or to replace the fleet
out on the road now.
“We believe the Transit Authority should
fix these buses to address these blind spots,”
said safety expert Brian Sherlock.
According to Sherlock, the costs to reengineer the pillars to eliminate the central
blind spot was estimated at $300.

Government Affairs, was hopeful that
engaging all parties in the discussion was key.
“We are just starting the dialogue,” said
Rosenberg. “There has not been a lot of talk.
We want to shed light on this and we hope we
can move in the right direction.”

presidente de TWU Local 100. “Pero la operación
del autobús no debe ser criminalizada. Someter

beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer
and motivator,” says
contributor Nilka
Martell, of Puerto Rican
descent, as she continues
to explore her hometown.
Here is her latest
installment.
It was time.
This past Sat., May 9th, the
family and friends of Kristopher
Morgan Powell gathered at the
Woolworth Chapel at Woodlawn
Cemetery to pay their respects.
His hat was placed next to his

portrait hung in the background.
He was a dear friend to me and
my children, a part of our family.
He wore many hats, as a researcher, activist,
historian, environmentalist, blogger and
landscaper. He offered free walking tours
and presentations which were very well
attended.
Morgan passed away suddenly in
September 2014. Directly after, his friends
quickly mobilized to locate his family and
started an online fundraiser to bury him.
After some time, his family decided that
Woodlawn Cemetery, where he conducted
several free walking tours, was a fitting
place to lay him to rest.
The service began with a saxophone
tribute by Joe Sherman, who played the jazz
songs of some of great musicians buried in
Woodlawn. Sherman was good friends with
Morgan. He often attended his tours with an
instrument to play along the way.
Family and friends shared memories, and
we made our way to the memorial stone
located on the Brookside section of the
grounds.
Minister Romall Smalls led us in prayer,
and flowers were placed by the stone.

Su sombrero fue colocado junto a sus restos
cremados y un retrato favorito colgaba en el
fondo.
Él era un amigo muy querido para mí y mis
hijos, una parte de nuestra familia. Usaba
muchos sombreros, como investigador,
activista, historiador, ecologista, bloguero y
paisajista. Ofreció excursiones gratuitas a pie y
presentaciones que tenían gran asistencia.
Morgan falleció repentinamente en
septiembre de 2014. De inmediato, sus amigos

The kick-off included garden-themed
activities for children and youths, cooking
demonstrations, and smoke-free housing
education.

helps to increase healthy eating,” said

“Prevention is worth a pound a cure,”
said Comptroller Scott Stringer.
Concern was certainly evident this past
Monday, as residents, aided by AARP
volunteers, lined up in front of a large truck to
dump their documents for shredding.
“It is very important to shred papers,” said
volunteer Carol Mills, who also brought her
personal documents. “I just shredded five
big bags of papers from the 80’s, 90’s, court
cases, and Social Security letters.”
It was Santa Ortega’s second Shred Day
event, as she had previously participated in
2014. She said she was well aware of the risks
involved. “I don’t like to throw my papers in the trash
because someone could rob my identity,” said
Ortega. Stringer said that the best way to protect
new Yorkers from scammers was to raise
awareness and to spread the word.
“Prevention is worth a pound a cure,” said
the Comptroller, noting that senior citizens
were among the most vulnerable targets of the
“billion dollar fraud industry.”
Finkel urged the elderly not to underestimate
the ability of criminals in the fraud industry
who, she assured, were rapidly multiplying.
“Identity theft is the nation’s fastestgrowing crime,” she said.
It’s a story Harris knows all too well.
“Do not send money to phone solicitors,”
she urged. “Be mindful. It is time for all of us
to open our eyes and ears.”
