Agencies on alert

T
he American Dream is being
hijacked.
So charged State Senator Jeff Klein in
a City Hall press conference convened on
Thurs., May 7th.
“Immigrants come here to better their life,
and are finding individuals who are quick to
take advantage of them,” said Klein.
He led a coalition of legislators and
advocates including State Senator Diane
Savino, Assemblymember Francisco Moya,
Councilmember Ritchie Torres, immigrant
rights and community groups in releasing an
investigative report on unscrupulous practices
occurring at many city employment agencies.
The results of the undercover investigation
showed that fraudulent practices are pervasive
at the agencies, which often target immigrant
communities.
The report highlighted the frequency with
which properly registered agencies often
violate existing laws, and how unregistered
and illicit agencies scam workers out of cash
with promises to secure employment that
does not exist.
“Bogus employment agencies, filled with
unscrupulous men and women, are targeting
and exploiting immigrants searching for
work,” insisted Klein, who, together with
Moya, has introduced legislation intended to
remedy the agencies’ fraudulent practices and

job but are often left with no real job leads

“It’s absolutely unconscionable to fleece
the unemployed, many whom are immigrants
looking for decent work. New York must pass
[this] bill to protect workers from employment
scams,” said State Senator Diane Savino.
Known as the Justice for Job Seekers bill,
the new legislation, introduced in the Senate
and Assembly, seeks to modify licensing
procedures to make it more difficult for
agencies to defraud workers, to improve
existing regulations and to facilitate legal help
to victims of fraud.
“This legislation is going to end the
corruption of these employment agencies,”
said Moya. “We are going to send a clear
message: The abuse stops today.”

Klein encabezó una coalición de legisladores y
defensores incluyendo la Senadora Estatal Diane
Savino, Francisco Moya miembro de la Asamblea,
el Concejal Ritchie Torres, grupos de derechos

A

This weekend, there will be no denying
the call of the streets, as tens of thousands
will flock to the Lower East Side for one of
the city’s largest Latino pride events.
Down on Avenue C, the streets will be
bustling with the arrival of the Loisaida
Festival.
Yes, there will be
Hector “Papote” Jiménez
channeling
old-school
soneros such as Benny
Moré, Ismael Rivera and
Hector LaVoe.
Y si, DMob, the
Dominican
immigrant
MCs, will bring socially
conscious hip-hop rhymes
en español.
Certainly, the exuberance
of traditional plena won’t be missing, with
Capá Prieto performing the songs and verses
long thought to be forgotten.
That’s all just on the main stage.
For six blocks, there will be countless
performances, workshops, presentations
and shows in which to participate, create,
observe and enjoy.
But, more than an exuberant celebration
of culture, the festival is a testament to the
endurance of a singular legacy of deeply
rooted activism and heritage.
Since 1987, the annual event is traditionally
held the Sunday before Memorial Day, and is
sponsored by Loisaida Inc., the oldest Puerto
Rican non-for-profit organization in the
neighborhood.
Founded as a grassroots movement by
activists and residents in the mid-1970’s,
Loisaida Inc. would become formally
incorporated as a local
development corporation
focused on combatting
economic and social
disenfranchisement and
highlighting the rich
culture of the surrounding
Puerto Rican and Latin
American community.
But by 2008, and
now at the center of
a quickly gentrifying
neighborhood,
the
organization faced hard economic times itself.
That same year, the National Trust for Historic
Places classified the neighborhood as one of
America’s most endangered places.
“Few places in America can boast such a
rich tapestry of history, culture and architecture
as New York’s Lower Easat Siade. However,

MCs, traerán conciencia social con rimas de
hip-hop en español.
Ciertamente, la exuberancia de la tradicional
plena no se extrañará, con Capá Prieto

Y esto tan solo en el escenario principal.
Durante seis bloques habrá actuaciones
innumerables, talleres, presentaciones y
espectáculos en los cuales participar, crear,
observar y disfrutar.
Pero, más que una celebración exuberante
de la cultura, el festival es un testimonio de la
resistencia de un legado singular de un activismo
y una herencia profundamente arraigados.
Desde 1987, el evento anual se celebra
tradicionalmente el domingo antes de Día de

organización puertorriqueña sin fines de lucro más
antigua del barrio.
Fundada por activistas y residentes como

home for waves of immigrants since the
18th century—is now undergoing rapid
development,” explained the Trust
in its statement. “New hotels and
condominium towers are being
erected across the area, looming
large over the original
tenement
streetscape. As this building trend
shows no sign of abating, it
threatens to erode the fabric of
the community and wipe away the
collective memory of generations of
immigrant families.”
The city seized most of the 709 East
9th Street building for development, and the
center, which also housed a day care facility,
soon came under threat of eviction.
A rally of community support and the
intervention of local officials and local
Community Board 3, Loisaida Inc. was
able to stave off displacement.
But support critical to its
long-term sustainability as a
community hub, however,
came when the Acacia
Network,
Inc.
(Acacia), the largest
Hispanic-based
non-profit community
development organization
in New York State, and the
second largest in the United
States, stepped in.
In September 2012, Loisaida Inc.
became an affiliate of the network, which
provided planning and strategic resources,
management assistance and institutional
and capacity development.

exhibitions along the shoreline at Randall’s
Island Park. FLOW is aimed at fostering

uando actores inescrupulosos
deciden establecer una conexión
de gas ilegal, empiezan un reloj
potencialmente mortal que pone el
destino de ese edificio, así como las
personas en y alrededor de ella, en
grave riesgo.

he moment unscrupulous
actors set up an illegal gas
hook-up, they start the clock on
a dangerous timer that puts the
fate of that building, as well as the
people in and around it, at serious
risk.
And clocks like this have been ticking all
over Washington Heights for months.
The problem of illegal gas hook-ups came
into focus after an unlawful connection led
to an explosion that caused four deaths, at
least nineteen injuries and the destruction
of three buildings. Multiple individuals
and families in the affected area lost their
homes and businesses had to close amid the
wreckage and debris.
The consequences of these dangerous
hook-ups reach far and wide, and yet
alarmingly, such cases of illegal gas
hookups may be more common than we are
currently led to believe.
That rate strains
credulity.
A recent tip about illegal gas hook-ups
in eight buildings in northern Manhattan
and the Bronx, reported first to ABC 7
Eyewitness News, revealed that these
buildings, all owned by Alma Realty,
were using an illegal gas connection. ABC
reported the tip to Con Edison, who verified
the claim and shut off gas either partially or
entirely to all eight buildings.
Five of the eight Alma Realty-owned
buildings found to be using an illegal
gas hook-up are located in Washington
Heights, including one in my district at 600
W. 161st street.
Not only were the tenants in that building
put in jeopardy, but the aftermath has
made regular day to day tasks challenging,
forcing tenants to spend more on food and
laundry.
Although the landlord could face
penalties or fines after the city reviews the
violations, preemptive safety measures are
lacking. More proactive efforts from the
city and utilities companies are essential to
provide meaningful assurances of security
to tenants.
One bill I proposed with
Councilmember Elizabeth
Crowley of Queens earlier
this year, Intro 738,
would improve safety by
creating a robust standard
for plumbers to perform
this sensitive gas work. It
would create new testing
and licensing requirements
for non-master plumbers
seeking to do gas-line repairs, removal or
installation.
But to prevent another tragedy, there’s
even more that we can do. Con Edison
reports that in the last year, they found
only 150 cases of illegal gas hook-ups out
of their 1.1 million customers.
That’s a rate of .01 percent and it strains
credulity.
It’s time to think creatively about how we
can catch more of these illegal gas hookups. In the coming months, I look forward
to working with utilities, the Department of
Buildings and my colleagues on the City
Council, so we can get in front of this issue
with solutions that will protect the public.
The security of tenants in Washington
Heights and around the city demands no
less.

Here is her latest installment.
The Bronx Volunteer Coalition held its
Second Annual Bronx Volunteers of the
Year awards ceremony this past week.
The Coalition is compromised of 40 serviceminded organizations that seek to increase
volunteerism in the borough.
It was an amazing time celebrating
the work of those in the community who
dedicate countless hours to helping the
Bronx is so many different ways. From
feeding the homeless, to working with the
elderly and advocating for housing rights,
these volunteers are on the forefront of
change.
Often, volunteers do not want recognition.
The work they do is a labor of love, and
they do not seek to be in the limelight with
awards.
But these recognitions are well deserved.
Friends and family members came out to
support the nominees and winners, and they
too were excited to be able to hear the many
ways folks get involved in the community.
Miriam Tabb, the Master of Ceremonies,
was comical from the moment she began
the program. Laughs can be heard from the
lower level of the Bronx Museum for the
Arts.
Keynote speaker NYC Chief Service
Officer Paula Gavin shared her love for
volunteerism and how it has personally
impacted her life. She currently travels to
Haiti several times a year as a board member
of the YMCA program and also sits on the
board of the Association for a Better New
York.
The categories, and winners, were as
follows: Youth Volunteer Leader Award,
Jailine Casado; Neighborhood Impact
Award, Mike Gupta; Organized Volunteer
Impact Award, Second Chance Christian
Center; and Lifetime Volunteer Service

I had the honor of presenting each nominee
and winner with his or her recognition.
It was nice to be able to meet others who
love the Bronx as much as I do, and who
work tirelessly to make it a better place.
Guests enjoyed ood from the Bronx Havana
Cafe and those of age sipped on beer from
the Bronx Beer Hall. There is nothing better
than being supported by local businesses,
especially when the theme was Bronxbased.
Though it was a Monday night, and
school and work followed the next morning,
folks stayed to the very end.
It was a wonderful way to celebrate
the accomplishment of volunteers and
to invigorate and inspire others to get
involved.

La Coalición de Voluntarios del Bronx celebró
su segunda entrega de premios anuales a los
voluntarios del Bronx esta semana pasada.
La Coalición está compuesta por 40
organizaciones con espíritu de servicio que
buscan aumentar el voluntariado en el Bronx.
Lo pasamos de maravilla celebrando el
trabajo de aquellos en la comunidad que
dedican incontables horas para ayudar al
Bronx de muchas maneras diferentes. Desde
alimentar a las personas sin hogar y trabajar
con las personas mayores hasta abogar por los
derechos de vivienda. Estos voluntarios están a
la vanguardia del cambio.
Muchas veces, los voluntarios no quieren
reconocimiento. La labor que realizan es un
trabajo de amor y no buscan estar el centro de
la atención con premios.
Pero estos reconocimientos son bien
merecidos.
Amigos y familiares apoyaron a los
nominados y ganadores, y ellos también
estaban contentos de poder escuchar las
muchas maneras en que la gente se involucra
en la comunidad. Miriam Tabb, la maestra de ceremonias, fue
cómica desde el momento en que comenzó
el programa. Las risas se podían escuchar
desde la planta baja del Museo de las Artes del
Bronx.
Paula Gavin, directora de servicio de NYC,
fue la oradora principal y compartió su amor
por el voluntariado y cómo ha impactado

suficiente bebieron cerveza del Bronx Beer
Hall. No hay nada mejor que ser apoyado por
los negocios locales, especialmente cuando el
tema era el Bronx.
A pesar de que era un lunes por la noche,
y que había escuela y trabajo a la mañana
siguiente, la gente se quedó hasta el final.
Fue una maravillosa manera de celebrar el

AIDS Community Leader Dies
arbara Williams, the first
HIV+ woman on the New York
State AIDS Advisory Council, died
in the Bronx on May 10, 2015.
An extraordinary leader, Williams
also served as the Coordinator for Health
People’s AIDS Family Support program,
which assisted AIDS-impacted families in
the Bronx, the borough with the highest
number per-population of parents trying to
raise their children through the despair and
challenges of having AIDS. A mother of five
herself, Williams was able to bring hundreds
of these families stability and hope. The
program she ran consistently had the largest
enrollment of any similarly federally-funded
program in New York. Unfortunately, it ended in 2006 when
the Bloomberg Administration
switched millions in federal

AIDS funding from the
Bronx to Manhattan, leaving
the Bronx without any funding
at all for such a program. “I was really proud of that
program,” Williams said.
“Whether it was encouraging
a mother to go back to school or get in drug
treatment, we were there for them.” Appointed to the New York State AIDS
Advisory Council by Governor George
Pataki, where she served for 11 years, she
was a major voice for reform of New York
State’s HIV Partner Notification procedures. She, herself, had contracted HIV from a

to realize, at the time, New York State Law

physicians
and public health
agencies from trying
to even inform partners
anonymously that they may have
been exposed to HIV.
The new state law she fought
for, which went into effect
in 2000, by embracing
routine partner counseling,
was life-saving for literally
thousands of New Yorkers.
Perhaps most impressive was that Williams
was self-taught. She didn’t have a high
school degree or even GED but when AIDS
hit her family, she determined to learn all
about the epidemic. She first took AIDS
trainings at Health People because a relative
was sick, took more training after she learned
that she, herself, had contracted HIV, became
a volunteer Peer Educator, then an Assistant
Coordinator, and Coordinator.
“Her degree was in people,” said Chris
Norwood, Executive Director of Health
People. “She loved them. She wanted
everyone to have the best.”
In addition to her five children, and her
husband Danny, she leaves behind many
nieces, nephews and grandchildren who
adored her.

y los retos de tener SIDA. Aún con cinco hijos,

secundaria, ni siquiera un GED, pero cuando
el SIDA golpeó a su familia, decidió aprender
todo acerca de la epidemia. Primero se
capacitó respecto al SIDA en Health People
porque un pariente estaba enfermo, tomó más
entrenamiento después de enterarse de que
había contraído el VIH, se convirtió en educadora
voluntaria, después en coordinadora adjunta y
luego en coordinadora.
“Su grado estaba en la gente”, dijo Chris
Norwood, director ejecutivo de Health People.
“Ella amaba a las personas. Quería que todos
tuvieran lo mejor”.
Además de sus cinco hijos, y su marido Danny,

Riding high

e just wishes he’d done it first.
“I would be a millionaire now,” smiled
Evaristo Torres.
Torres has been a Bronx driver at Uber for
the past 9 months. They are referred to as
“driver-partners” at the ride-sharing service,
which is now available in over 200 cities
worldwide - including the Bronx.
Torres said it was the simplicity of the
concept - that those in need of a ride would
need only to swipe or tap to connect directly
with an available professional driver- that was
most appealing. Torres gathered with fellow Bronx drivers
at the Willis Avenue Community Garden
on Wed., May 13th for a “Driver-Partner
Appreciation Event” hosted by Uber as part
of Bronx Week.
“We want to get together and tell our drivers
how much we appreciate them,” explained
Josh Mohrer, general manager at Uber NYC,
noting that close to 2,500 of their drivers live
in the Bronx. “We are here to celebrate this
wonderful and growing community.”
Uber is a mobile-application-based
transportation service. Launched in San
Francisco in 2010, it has rapidly expanding
in other parts of the country and the world.

Celebrating Bronx drivers made strategic
sense, explained Mohrer.
“One out of 3 trips starts in the
boroughs,” he said. “The Bronx is the fastest
growing borough right now.”
City Councilmember Annabel Palma, who
represents the 18th District, which includes
Parkchester, Soundview, Castle Hill, Clason
Point and Harding Park, lauded Uber for its
innovation and its rapid expansion.
“I was extremely proud at the statistics and
the number of drivers in my district,” said the
Councilmember.
Palma expressed support for the e-hail
company and praised the use of technology to
attract riders, as well as the flexibility drivers
had to make up their own schedules and
become “their own bosses.”
“A little competition is good,” said Palma.
“People have choices, and Uber is a good
choice for the people in my community.”

Though Uber has faced criticism for
being what some have termed a disruptive
influence within the car service industry,
the drivers at the garden insisted that the
service had proven a boon.
“I make my own schedule. I can take days
off whenever I want,” said Gabriel Rivera,
who joined the Uber team two months ago.
Rivera, who used to drive a school bus but
was laid off last August, said he applied for his
Uber online. With his Taxi and Limousine
Commission (TLC) in hand,he was ready to
start.
His wife Yesenia Adorno, whom he married
last year, was happy as well.
“He spends more time with his family, and
can spend weekends with his son,” she said.
Others offered different reasons.
“I love [it] because Uber makes my life

at the Monroe College Mintz Auditorium on Tues., May
26th from 1:00 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. to speak bout self-defense,
self-confidence, and self-empowerment.

Sanchez is originally from California and won the 2014 Miss USA title as
Miss Nevada.
She is an avid fan of jazz and
ballet, but also an enthusiastic
practitioner of Taekwondo and holds
a fourth degree black belt.
“I learned at a young age that you
need to be confident and be able to
defend yourself and I think that’s
something we should really implement for a lot of women,” she said. “More
awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves.”
In addition to talking with the Monroe students about self-defense, she will
be able to relate to them on a very personal level, because of her first-hand
understanding of the challenges many face when growing up in tough urban
environments.
At the age of six, Sanchez lived with her mom in a women’s shelter. Now, she
works in one. “I can really relate to the women on a personal level because I’ve
been there and I’ve been through those experiences,” she said.

ARTFUL HEALTH is a series of programs presented
by the Bronx Museum focused on an array of
health issues of extreme relevance to the Bronx

conditions such as asthma, obesity, diabetes,
sexually transmitted infections, and mental illness

into the Acacia fold as the organization’s first
cultural organization was a natural fit.
“It is a great victory,” he said. “We have
an opportunity to preserve the history of
the Puerto Rican and Latino community by
providing a space to celebrate and cultivate
our history.”
As Russi and his team have conceived
it, in addition to celebrating deeply rooted
traditions, the reconstituted organization will
also serve as a foundational hub that will
incubate and develop new talent and new
experiences.
“We can educate newcomers into the
neighborhood about the contributions made,”
said Russi. “And with the passion of an
incredibly talented and committed core team,
we are fully reactivating the new center.”
That core team, as led by Lymaris Alboris,
Acacia’s Director of Project Management,
Communications and External Affairs, is
fueled by the conviction that organizations
such as Loisaida Inc. must be responsive in
order to remain thriving at the heart of the
communities they serve.
“Preserving our organizations is at the heart
of what we do,” said Alboris. “We build on the
legacy to build for the future.”
It is a vision keenly shared by Libertad
Guerra, Chief Curator and Artistic Director.
“We want to reclaim the Latino spirit in the
Lower East Side,” said Guerra.
She makes reference to the name of the
center – and the neighborhood itself: Loisaida,
which hails from a Spanglish term originally
attributed to poet and activist Bimbo Rivas.
“The word speaks to activism of the time,”
said Guerra. “It speaks to who we were, and

showcases many dance and theater workshops,
and frequently hosts community events.
Since reopening, the center has offered a
steady source of focused programming. In the
last year, there has been a multidisciplinary
exhibit of poet Julia de Burgos; a residency
collaboration with the Flux Theater Company;
and community screen printing workshops
that explore themes of cultural history and
immigrant identity. Also offered was the
PLENATORIUM, a project focused on the
study and practice of the Puerto Rican musical
genre of plena.

to the end of July) are now being accepted.
The organization seeks to put together a
group of 20 female students ages 18-24 who
have either a high school diploma or a GED/

who want to attend CUNY in fall 2015. Some stipend support is available via this
scholarship.
The content of Grace Outreach’s College
Prep program is to give the students intensive
instruction to prepare for the COMPASS/
remedial exams at CUNY, and to enter
CUNY in Fall 2015.
Students who begin their college work
with zero or only one remedial class
have a much better chance statistically of
graduating within 3 years for an associate’s
degree. Grace Outreach operates this special
summer program as a member of the Bronx
Opportunity Network (BON) consortium.
Applications are due June 1, 2015 and
potential students are urged to submit as
soon as possible due to high demand for
these seats.

Loisaida Inc. will offer computer training and
culinary programs.
In February, the center received a grant
of $150,000 from Investors Foundation
and Investors Bank aimed at expanding
its capacity in cultural fields, S.T.E.A.M.
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts
and Mathematics), design, and youth
development.
The grant will facilitate, among other goals,
the development of the state-of-the-art Media
Arts and Technology, and Healthy Living/
Teaching Commercial Kitchen Components,
which is slated to serve over 500 youths.
And then there is the festival.
Now in its 28th year, the festival will
bring to the corridor of Avenue C scores of
artists, artisans, vendors, and community
organizations from across the city and from
Puerto Rico as well. There will be a community
parade, outdoor screenings and theater
workshops in La Plaza Cultural, a community
garden that serves as an art space. In addition,
health and human services organizations will
offer interactive experiences and resources to
highlight health and wellness.
The festival, explain organizers, is as
much an expression of pride as it is a call
to collaboration and inclusion.
“The Lower East Side represents
diversity,” explained Carlos “Tato”
Torres, Deputy of Community Affairs.
“The Festival is more important today
than ever,” he added. “We are planting
our flag.”
For Alejandro Epifanio Juan, Technical
and Media Manager, working directly
to engage residents, including local
schoolchildren, has been the most
gratifying experience.
“It really is incredible to see them make
their own connections with the history,” he
remarked.
The anticipation is contagious.
A visit to the iconic restaurant Casa Adela
on Loisaida Avenue yields more than a taste
of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine of roasted
pernil and rotisserie chicken.
The restaurant’s owners have weathered
many of the changes; the eatery was founded
in 1976.
Co-owner Luis Rivera explained that
Casa Adela would again be making its
indelible presence known at the event – with
delicious platters of food, yes, but also its own
percussion band.
“It is one of the best festivals that honors the
Puerto Rican roots of the Lower East Side,” he
enthused.
Nearby, Wanda Gutiérrez smiled – she too
would be in attendance.
“The festival is very rich in many cultures,”
she noted. “It is very beautiful.”

A
cut to the heart.
That’s what advocates who rallied
this past Fri., May 15th say that funding
cuts to the city’s three public library systems
constitute for the millions of residents who
rely on its services.
The city’s three systems are the Brooklyn
Public Library, the Queens Library and the
New York Public Library (NYPL), which
serves Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten
Island.
Representatives of all three systems,
elected officials and allies gathered at City
Hall to demand that the City Council and

“The libraries are the hearts of our
communities,” said District Council 37’s
Executive Director Henry Garrido. “But
budget cuts since the recession have reduced
services and hours, and desperately needed
infrastructure work was set aside.”
District Council 37 is the city’s largest
municipal employees union, with 121,000
municipal workers, including those at city
libraries.
In the aftermath of the 2008 recession, the
Bloomberg administration cut funding for
the library systems. Since 2009, the city has
reduced funding by nearly a fifth.
Despite subsequent growth in city
revenues, and soaring
attendance rates, funds
have not been restored to
pre-recession levels.
Moreover, in the 2016
budget submitted by
Mayor Bill de Blasio,
the three systems lost
approximately
$10
million in their operating
budgets.
In 2015, the three
systems received $323
million, which included
$5 million from the City
Council in operating
funds; this year, only
$313 million was

the 99 percent.”
The Mayor’s proposed 2016 budget did not
include the capital funds requested.

Penguin Pride
colony of little
penguins (Eudyptula
minor) has made its debut in the
Aquatic Bird House at WCS’s
(Wildlife Conservation Society)
Bronx Zoo.
Named for their small size and characteristic
bluish hue, little penguins are also known as
blue penguins, little blue penguins, and fairy
penguins.
Full-grown adults are only about 13 inches
tall and weigh 2 to 3 pounds. They are the
smallest of the 18 penguin species and
native to coastal southern Australia and New
Zealand. These are the first little penguins to be on
exhibit at the Bronx Zoo and there are only
three facilities in the U.S. that currently have
them.
All of the birds in the colony were hatched
at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia and
brought to the Bronx Zoo as part of a breeding
program. Approximately 15 penguins a
year hatch at Taronga, making it the most
successful little penguin breeding program in
the world. The Bronx Zoo penguins will help
ensure continued genetic diversity in the little
penguin populations in the U.S.
“The little penguins are acclimating well
to their new home and are quite a sight to
see,” said Jim Breheny, WCS Executive
Vice President and General Director of the
U
WCS Zoos and Aquarium. “The Bronx Zoo
is focused on the conservation of the species
we exhibit, and international partnerships
and breeding programs like that of the little
penguin are vital to ensuring the survival of
the species in the wild through education,
awareness, and connecting people to nature in
a way that can only be accomplished through
close, in-person encounters.”
Taronga Zoo Director and Chief Executive
Cameron Kerr said, “The little penguins
at the Bronx Zoo have taken on the role of
international ambassadors for their species.
Visitors to the Bronx Zoo from around the
world can come to learn about these wonderful
Australian marine animals. This group of little
penguins will ensure a thriving population in
the U.S. for many years to come.”
The species occurs in temperate marine
waters and feed on fish, cephalopods and
crustaceans. They nest colonially in burrows
on sand dunes or rocky beach areas. Like
other penguin species, they use a wide
range of vocalizations to communicate with
each other. In the wild, their populations are
threatened by climate change and human
activities.The Bronx Zoo is supporting
Taronga Zoo’s little penguin conservation
programs in Sydney Harbor. The work
includes monitoring, awareness campaigns,
rescue and rehabilitation, breeding programs,
and more. Man-made nest boxes can provide
safety from introduced predators and guard
dogs have been used in some places to
discourage predation.
WCS has field conservation programs in
more than 60 countries and all of the
world’s oceans. These programs use sciencebased solutions to save wildlife, including
several penguin species, and their habitats.

Frederick Douglas presenta una gran cantidad
de alimentos para el alma de autoservicio y
ensaladas.
Es uno de siete Restaurantes Manna’s a
lo largo de la ciudad, con 4 en Harlem y 3 en
Brooklyn.
Las bandejas del buffet están llenas de
alimentos para el alma como macarrones con
queso, ensaladas, pollo frito, costillas, patas de

48th Annual Salute of the Children’s
Program. Each winner received
a ConEdison Yankees Kid jacket

counties, are selected for their academic

The event is part of Gov.
Andrew Cuomo’s continuing
Citizen
Preparedness
Corps Training Program,
which gives citizens the
knowledge and tools to
prepare for emergencies
and disasters, respond
accordingly, and recover
as quickly as possible to
pre-disaster
conditions.
Working with the New York
State Division of Homeland
Emergency
Security
and
Services (DHSES) and local
emergency management personnel, troops
are conducting these training events across
the state.
The venue is located at 3630 Third
Avenue.
Citizens should register for the event
at
www.dhses.ny.gov/aware-prepare/
nysprepare/registration.
Since the program’s launch in early
February 2014, troops have held more
than 280 events statewide, and taught over
33,200 citizens how to be better prepared for
emergencies and disasters.
The program, designed by DHSES, covers
a broad range of emergency-preparedness
topics, like developing a family emergency
plan, stocking up on emergency
supplies, and registering for
NY-Alert, the free statewide
emergency alert system.

receive
a
training
certificate, a walletsized “Z-Card” with
emergency preparedness
information, and a free
Citizen
Preparedness
Starter Kit (one per family).
The kit includes a firstaid kit, face mask, pocket
radio with batteries, food bars,
emergency blanket and other key items
to help citizens in the immediate aftermath
of a disaster. The classes include information
about what other supplies and items citizens
should add to their kits.

agencies are in the rise, from 328 complaints

Fraudulent agencies frequently operate from

del Contralor estima que el 44% de la fuerza
laboral de la ciudad de Nueva York, algunos 1.9
millones de residentes, son inmigrantes.

empleo a las personas”, dijo ella.
