Those are the words used – by students, leaders
and administrators – to describe The Model New
York State Senate (Model Senate) program.
Founded in 1997, the Model Senate is
administered
annually
by
CUNY’s Edward T. Rogowsky
Internship (ETR) Program, in
collaboration with the Puerto
Rican and Hispanic Task Force
of the New York State Legislature
and the State University of New
York (SUNY).
For nearly two decades, the
Model Senate, as founded by CUNY Senior Vice
Chancellor Jay Hershenson, in partnership with
Task Force leaders, and administered by Program
Director Dr. Anthony Maniscalco and Assistant
Director Ernesto Malavé,
Jr., has been a forefront
model of experiential
earning in public policy.
Each year, more than 60
CUNY and SUNY students
come together for a series
of
intensive
training
seminars on representation,
state policy formulation,
and the legislative process.
“This contingent of
ambitious and talented
students receives unique
insight on the state
legislative process, access
to Albany’s powerbrokers,
and hands-on training,”
explains
Senior
Vice
Chancellor Jay Hershenson.
“Immersing themselves in the deliberative
process that is key to policy-making forges a new
language of leadership for our students.”
While this kind of program is typically offered
to students at Ivy League universities, CUNY
seeks to provide its students the same type of
public service training.
“Students undergo life-changing experiences,”
says Dr. Maniscalco. “They become experts
in public policy issues, and emerge
more adept at thinking critically,
speaking publicly, and advancing an
ethical agenda.”
The ETR Internship Program
coordinates the selection
process
and
the
development
of
participants from
students to Model
Senators.
“Through the
process, students
change the way
they
make
decisions,”
notes Assistant
Mayor
Program
Director
Bill de
Ernesto
Malavé,
Jr.
Blasio
“They begin to understand that if you ever want
to speak for the public, you need to listen first.”
Seminars include visits from prominent New
York State legislators and guest lecturers.
Students are also eligible to participate
in a part-time summer internship with state
legislators on the Task Force in community
outreach, constituent case intake, and field
research. In addition, participating students have
also received more than $250,000 in
scholarships.
The program culminates every year
with students debating legislation on
the floor of the Senate Chamber during
the Somos El Futuro Spring Conference.

Hershenson. “There is no
greater highlight than to see and
hear the brilliant young minds
likely to become the future
leaders of our communities
in action.”

Yunerys Liriano is looking to unlock doors.
The Business Management major knows that the first key to
addressing a community’s needs is engagement.
“This process of working on bills [has shown me] the things that
are going to affect my community and my district,” says the student
of Dominican descent.
As a Model Senator, Yunerys will represent the Bronx’s 33rd Senate
District, and is poised to vote yes on raising the minimum wage.
“Hard-working people deserve to make a higher wage.”
Yunerys, who also serves in the Student Government Association,
says she is looking forward to lending her voice to the cause.
“I get a chance to be a part of something bigger. I get a chance to
speak my mind.”

Marcus Johnson is all over the place – in the best way possible.
The Harlem native has chosen to concentrate on both International
Criminal Justice and Mathematics.
“Studying criminal justice shows me data and arguments based in law,
[and] mathematics is rooted in logic and reason,” he explains.
And his work as Model Senator for the 56th Senate District upstate
has demonstrated the importance of constructive dialogue.
“It’s hard to make a decision,” he says. “The concept we keep coming
back to is bipartisanship. You have to maintain a level of impartiality.”
The first-hand experience in discourse will pay off.
“My goal is to be active in government. Policymaking is the key to
making sustainable change for society.”

“I’ve always been interested in how laws are created.”
A Paralegal Studies student, Kelly Almonte has used her time as a Model
Senator to become immersed in the intricacies of policy-making.
“There’s a lot of back and forth, even between party members,” says Kelly,
who is representing State Senate District 5 in Long Island. “Nothing is ever
unanimous.”
The sessions have served to reinforce her interest in the legislative process.
“I want to pursue a major in Political Science,” says the DominicanAmerican aspiring lawyer.
“Knowing how much teamwork and communication is involved shows how
important it is to be well-rounded.”

Fighting fraud

N
o such thing as TMI.
That was the message from Councilmember
Annabel Palma and other community leaders
who gathered to discuss consumer fraud –
from pyramid schemes to identity theft – at
the Parkchester Branch of the New York
Public Library this past Tues., March 10th.
“We will continue to raise awareness and
tell people how to protect themselves,” said
Councilmember Palma, who sponsored the
“Protecting Yourself” forum.
“Too much information is never enough,”
she added.
The session was attended by dozens of
local residents who sought information on
how to prevent being victimized – and some
who feared it might have already happened.
The panelists hailed from various city and
state agencies, and advocacy organizations.
Assistant New York State Attorney General
Roberto Lebron defined identity theft as the
act of using the personal information of others
in order to obtain financial gain.
Lebron provided specific personal data that
was a priority to protect – including Social
Security numbers, maiden names, birthdates,
bank accounts, and credit card numbers.
“Your Social Security number is sufficient
for someone to obtain a credit card on your
name and a mortgage loan,” said Lebron,
discouraging the habit of carrying the card in
one’s wallet.
Attendee Joselyn Lagone said she felt she
had been a victim of Herbalife, a company
that is being investigated by the U.S. Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) for complaints that
it operates as a pyramid scheme.
She asked Lebron if the Attorney General’s
office would start to investigate Herbalife
as a company rather than following up on
individual complaints.
In turn, Lebron responded, “We’ve
investigated many pyramid schemes. If you
are aware of one and you want to bring it to
our attention, please do so with confidence.”
Moreover, he indicated that he could spend
“hours” on the topic, and would be glad to
continue the discussion at additional forums.

Francisca Montana, a Consumer Fraud
Coordinator with advocacy group Make the
Road New York (MRNY), sought to assure
attendees that there are a host of resources
available to fight back against would-be
scams and frauds.
She shared with those present copies
of “fotonovelas,” known as comic strips,
developed by MRNY to educate consumers
on pyramid schemes.
The message of these “fotonovelas,” she
explained, is to use daily examples that people
can identify with and to urge neighbors to
file formal complaints with governmental
authorities.
Companies like Herbalife, she indicated,
often target Latino and immigrant
communities, preying upon those with less

housands of attendees flocked
to the Jacob Javits Convention
Center this past Sat., Mar. 14th
for the Second Annual New York
Diabetes Expo.
The event, hosted by the American
Diabetes Association of Greater New York
in partnership with Healthfirst, offered free
health screenings and education, as well as
healthy cooking demonstrations, product
displays and guest lecturers.
The expo offers information and resources
on how to prevent and manage diabetes,
which afflicts approximately 29 million
people in the United States, around 9 percent
of the population.
It is one of several high-profile local
events for the American Diabetes Association
this year, which include the Tour de Cure
cycling event in June, and the association’s
75th Anniversary Gala in November at
Hammerstein Ballroom.

center’s North Wing, collecting health-related
information and perusing displays from
vendors, who offered items ranging from

be handled through your diet,” said Ramos.
She urged visitors to use brown pastas,
rice and breads and avoid white pastas,
which are often bleached and offer reduced
nutritional value. “White pasta has been
stripped of all its nutrients and fiber,” she
said.

help in managing it,” said Hyde-Daddio, who
explained that the disease can be maintained
through a combination of diet, medication
and physical activity.
“It’s important that people learn portion
control, and how to set up their plate so that
it’s more balanced with healthy foods,” she
added.
Pi explained that getting nutritional
information to elderly individuals is an
important component in the fight against
diabetes.
“A lot of times that population has limited
access to healthy foods, because they may
be shut in and have difficulty shopping,”
said Pi.
But concern is not limited to older individuals.
Type 2 diabetes, which used to be most
prevalent among older adults, is now afflicting a
younger population, even very young children.
“Now more than ever, we are seeing Type
2 diabetes in kids,” said Hyde-Daddio. “It’s
an alarming trend, and if we can get younger
kids to adjust their diets, they’ll be much
better off.”

Abdon Villamizar Play Writing Award
for Cama para dos (Bed for two),
Yoleros was published in 2014 in the
Palabras Acentuadas Anthology.
The play will make its debut on March
19th at IAIT Theater Todo Vanguardia, with
an all-Dominican cast that includes actors
Modesto Jiménez, Mathia Vargas and Sully
Bonnelly.
“We are all ‘yoleros,’”
explained
playwright
Vasquez Escaño. “At a
particular moment in our
lives, we look for a new
beginning.”
The title “yoleros” refers
to a slang term for travelers,
often poor, who make the
journey from the Dominican Republic in
small boats called “yolas”.
The play is likely to be particularly
meaningful for immigrants, explained
director Martín Balmaceda.
“Yoleros takes us to a world where humor
and pain are always intertwined,” he said.

challenges of staging the play was its use of
video montages, a practice that he said can
prove tricky.
“I am using multimedia
elements,” said Balmaceda,
adding that he chose to
use these unique visual
elements to provide greater
dimension for audiencegoers.

March 19th through the 22nd at the IATI

On the 40th Anniversary of El Bronx
Remembered, celebrated writer Nicholasa
Mohr, one of the first Latinas to be published
by a major publishing house, makes a rare
public appearance to read a selection of
her works. El Bronx Remembered offers a
collection of stories that capture the flavor
and beat of the Bronx during the 1940’s and
1950’s.
The reading will take place at the Repertory
Theatre at Hostos Community, located at 450
Grand Concourse, on Wed., Mar. 25th at 7 p.m.

Lasting Legacies
Longwood Arts Project, the visual arts program
of the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA), presents
“Lasting Legacies: Ellsworth Ausby, Xenobia
Bailey, Honey Kassoy and Olga Kitt,” an exhibition
by elder artists, working in textile art, sculpture and
painting/graffiti.
Curated by Juanita Lanzo, these artists were
selected from the BCA’s Creating A Living Legacy
(CALL) Program and is designed to connect
elder artists with trained Legacy Specialists who
help them document and archive their artwork.

On Saturday, March 21st, BPMM will
once again offer a Pysanky Workshop
led by local artist Kim Piotrowski.
Piotrowski will teach participants the
time-honored art of intricately patterned
Ukrainian Easter eggs decorated using
beeswax and dyes that applied in layers.
Just in time for Easter, attendees can
create their own unique designs using
a wax-resist technique at this hands-on
workshop. Hot wax and permanent dyes
used; please dress accordingly. Age 14
and up. Bring a bag lunch, only light
refreshments offered. Space is limited.

“It is our money”

“T
his is everybody’s fight.”
Amanda González, a member of New
Settlement Apartments, a housing and
community services organization, gathered
with fellow parents, community leaders,
students and elected officials on what some
consider a day of misfortune – Friday the 13th
– to share some dire statistics.
“Last year, 12 percent of the kids in District
9 passed reading tests,” said González, noting
that children who couldn’t read at grade level
inevitably fell behind in other subjects as
well.
She shared personal accounts of their
families’ struggles within a system of
woefully underfunded public schools.
González’s younger son wasn’t provided
with the resources he needed as a special
education student, she said, while inadequate
test preparation led her daughter to fail the
Regents exam.
The concerned mother, and members of
advocacy groups New York Communities
for Change and the Alliance for Quality
Education, spoke out on Fri., Mar. 13th at
the Bronx School for Law, Government and
Justice.
They were joined by Assemblymember
Michael Blake and other Bronx elected
officials to announce a proposal for an

A major event that helps to galvanize
Hispanic leaders across our State is our
annual legislative conference. Our theme
this year is “Somos Now! Leading a new
generation of change, opportunity, progress
and success.”
Since its inception, The Puerto Rican/
Hispanic Task Force and the Somos El
Futuro Conference have brought together
legislators, community partners, business,
labor, student and other leaders together to
tackle issues impacting our communities and
to celebrate our culture and achievements.
Somos, through the Angelo Del Toro
Youth Leadership Institute, has also been a
driving force for educational outcomes by
empowering youth to aim high.
This conference has sought to aid them
in reaching their academic and professional
potential and enhancing their leadership
skills through generous scholarships that
support their paths to a higher education.
These efforts will be furthered through our
creation this year of a new Graduate Students
Mentorship Program, which we will launch
later this year.
At a time when our population and
economic impact continue to grow, we
cannot lose sight of the challenges that
remain.
Poverty and poor health outcomes still
plague many Hispanic communities; underrepresentation in government workforce and
corporate boards threaten to undermine our
needs; and income inequality poses a threat
to our future.
This conference serves as a platform to
collaboratively address these concerns – and
to create new partnerships and collective
efforts that will bring about solutions for the
short and long term vision of progress.
We have for long referred to this
conference as Somos el Futuro.
While that remains true, I hope we can
collectively realize that that future is now.
Hispanic leaders understand these new
challenges and the changes that are needed
to bring about a new level of success and
progress for all of our communities.

a alcanzar su potencial académico y
profesional y también a mejorar sus
habilidades de liderazgo a través de
generosas becas que apoyan sus caminos
hacia una educación superior. Estos
esfuerzos se verán favorecidos por la
creación de un nuevo programa de mentores
de estudiantes de posgrado, el cual se pondrá
en marcha a finales de este año.
En momentos en que nuestra población y
el impacto económico siguen creciendo, no
podemos perder de vista los retos pendientes.
Las consecuencias de la pobreza y la mala
salud todavía plagan a muchas comunidades
hispanas, y la representación insuficiente en
la fuerza laboral del gobierno y las juntas
corporativas amenazan con socavar nuestras
necesidades. La desigualdad de ingresos
representa una amenaza para nuestro futuro.
Esta conferencia sirve como plataforma
para abordar conjuntamente estas
preocupaciones y crear nuevas asociaciones
y esfuerzos colectivos que den lugar a
soluciones para una visión de progreso a
corto y largo plazo.
Nos hemos referido, por mucho tiempo, a
esta conferencia como Somos el Futuro.
Si bien eso sigue siendo cierto, espero que
podamos darnos cuenta colectivamente de
que el futuro es ahora.

in our borough, we turn to Nilka
Martell, who continues to explore
her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
The Bronx River Alliance will host its
annual assembly on Tues., Mar. 24th. For
over ten years, the Alliance’s member
organizations have worked to restore the
Bronx River and make it accessible for
educational and recreational opportunities.
I’ve
attended
the
assembly for several years,
and it is always an amazing
time. We celebrate the past
year’s accomplishments,
and receive updates on
existing projects and on a
new year of programming.
We fill our calendars with dates for
volunteer events and plan ahead for the free
canoe rides, of course.
It is an exciting evening of networking,
brainstorming, connecting and reconnecting.
Just last month I took a walk through
Starlight Park. I was happy to see that the
Bronx River House, the Alliance’s future
16
headquarters, is being constructed. It is
expected to open some time later this year,
and I am hoping that a tentative date will be
revealed at the Assembly.
Some special presentations to come
include Rocking the Boat’s “Sailing on the
Bronx River” and the Natural Resources
Group’s “Fish Passage.”
I am looking particularly forward to
“Water Justice” from members of THE
POINT’s Youth Development Program.
I am always excited to see youths
invigorated and empowered by their
involvement with the river. I’ve spoken with
plenty of youth from various organizations
doing Bronx River-based work, and their
confidence shows when they discuss their
experiences. Many express the sentiment
that the river, in some ways, “saved” them.
They detail how their efforts keep them off
the streets and provided direction. They
learn to cultivate an appreciation and love
for the River. Some are completing high
school; others are completing college. They
will be the first to tell you – these programs
are essential to the communities they serve.
In the warmer months, there will be canoe
rides, walking tours, bike tours, races, free
festivities, free movie nights, volunteer
opportunities, and more.
I was also happy to find out that Morris
Perk and Taylor Made Creations are among
the Assembly’s local business sponsors this
year. Morris Perk serves one of my favorite
coffees, and they will also be serving tea.
Accompanying their beverages will be
homemade shortbread baked by Jaynine
Taylor, owner of Taylor Made Creations.
She and her crew are “Baking a Difference
in the Bronx” with their variety of specialty
sweets. I recently sampled
her strawberry shortcake
do-it-yourself bar. Not only
did I indulge my sweet
tooth with a hefty portion,
I took some home for the
kids. Delicious!
The Assembly, which is free and open
to the public, runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30
p.m. at the Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos
Community College, located at 450 Grand
Concourse (at 149th Street). There is a

información.
Ese fue el mensaje de la concejal Annabel
Palma y otros líderes de la comunidad, quienes
se reunieron para discutir el fraude al consumidor,
desde esquemas piramidales hasta el robo de
identidad, en la sucursal de Parkchester de la
Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York, el pasado
martes 10 de marzo.
“Continuaremos concientizando a la gente y
explicándole cómo protegerse”, dijo la concejal
Palma, quien organizó el foro “Protegiéndose uno
mismo”.
“El exceso de información nunca es suficiente”,
añadió.
La sesión contó con la presencia de decenas
de residentes locales que buscaban información
sobre cómo evitar ser víctimas, y algunos temían
ya haberlo sido.
Los panelistas procedían de varias agencias
de la ciudad y del estado.
El robo de identidad fue definido por Roberto
Lebrón, fiscal general asistente del estado de
Nueva York, como el acto de usar la información
personal de otros con el fin de obtener ganancias
financieras.
Lebrón proporcionó datos personales
específicos que son prioritarios proteger: números
de seguridad social, apellidos de soltera, fechas
de nacimiento, cuentas bancarias y números de
tarjetas de crédito.

“These thieves have come up with ways
to steal the magnetic strip on the credit
cards,” said Monoson.
In addition, she warned against mail
fraud and recommended mailing checks
whenever possible directly at the post
office.
Fred Williams, a representative from
Con Edison, warned against door-to-door
marketers, particularly those posing as Con
Edison employees.
“We make no surprise visits,” he said.
“We will notify you prior.”
In addition, he urged consumers to
always request proper identification from
those claiming to work for the utility
company.
“All Con Edison employees are required
to carry the company’s ID,” he said.
Also present was Kenneth Ebie, Special
Counsel at the Regulatory Compliance
Division of the NYC Department of
Consumer Affairs (DCA).
“We are in the business of protecting
consumers 365 days of the year,” said Ebie.
He presented data from a recent report
issued by the DCA listing the 10 top scams.
Among those were fraudulent employment
agencies, immigration services providers,
and phone scams.
“There is a wide variety,” he said of the
latter, noting that phone scams usually
involved a request for personal information.
“You should never [provide] any
personal information over the phone under
any circumstance,” he warned.
Montana summarized the forum’s
purpose in her closing remarks.
“[People sometimes are] scared or they
think it is difficult, but we need to prevent
fraud by educating the community and
filing complaints.”

For the first time, MTA New York City
Transit will bring FASTRACK to the 23 lines
in Harlem and the Bronx for two consecutive
weeks.
Beginning Monday, March 16, from
10 p.m. to 5 a.m., for four consecutive
weeknights, and from Monday, March 23,
to early morning Friday, March 27, 2 trains
are suspended between 3 Av-149 St and
96 St. 3 service is entirely suspended.
2 train service will operate in two
sections:
· Between Wakefield-241 St and 3 Av149 St. Trains from Wakefield-241 St skip
Jackson Av.
· Between 96 St and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn
College.
Travel alternatives:
Use free shuttle buses to complete your
trip. Buses operate as follows:

to perform dozens of tasks repairing and
replacing components.

“As a member of the Sanitation Committee,
I regularly work on issues relating to the
relationship of waste management and
the beautification of our neighborhoods,”
explained King.
He unveiled the first of the more than 50
new receptacle cans last Wed., Mar. 12th at
his 2015 State of the 12th Council District
Address.
“These new and improved receptacles
show that we are committed to renewing
public spaces,” he said.
“The Department is pleased to partner
with Councilmember Andy King to provide
additional high end litter baskets that will
enhance the cleanliness of busy streets in the
12th District of the Bronx,” said Commissioner
García. I thank Councilmember King
for helping us keep New York City clean
especially by arranging for extra litter baskets

Center (MHHC) in the Bronx assembled
in the expo’s screening area to offer blood
pressure and heart rate tests.
“We’ve had a lot of people come by today,”
remarked MHHC medical assistant Jackie
Nater. “These events are important because they
give people a chance to check [on their health]
without having to go to a medical center.”
Millie López, a program coordinator
at MHHC, said the center now has seven
locations throughout the Bronx, and
frequently partners with community-based
organizations to reach more people in the
borough who desperately need
medical services.
“Lots of people in the city
don’t visit the doctor, so we
need to take every opportunity
to reach them,” stated López.
A large crowd also gathered in
front of the booth for Advanced
Cardiovascular
Diagnostics,
a
company
providing
echocardiograms,
abdominal
aorta ultrasounds and carotid
Doppler tests at the expo.
Director Perry Frankel, MD,
said he also performed tests at
last year’s event, with surprising
results.
“More than two-thirds of
the tests we did came back
abnormal,” remarked Frankel.
“And about 10 percent had an
abdominal aorta blockage of
some sort. These are conditions
that don’t always show
symptoms, so many people are
walking around unaware of it.”
Those with diabetes have twice the risk
of having a heart attack, said Frankel, who
stressed the importance of reaching vulnerable
patient populations — his company routinely
offers testing in high-need neighborhoods
such as Claremont in the Bronx.
“We like to go where people need these
services the most,” stated Frankel. “If we
change the way that medicine is practiced
in poorer neighborhoods, we can help with
prevention citywide.”

“Ha pasado mucha gente por aquí hoy”, señaló
la asistente médica Jackie Nater de MHHC.
“Estos eventos son importantes porque dan a las
personas la oportunidad de revisarse sin tener
que ir a un centro médico”.
Millie López, coordinadora de programas de
MHHC, dijo que el centro cuenta ahora con siete
lugares en todo el Bronx y que frecuentemente
se asocia con organizaciones comunitarias para
llegar a más personas en el condado, las cuales
necesitan servicios médicos desesperadamente.

Apartamentos New Settlement, una organización
de vivienda y servicios comunitarios del suroeste
del Bronx.
Ella se reunió con otros padres de familia,
líderes comunitarios y funcionarios electos en lo
que algunos consideran un día de mala suerte
-viernes 13- para compartir algunas estadísticas
terribles.
“El año pasado, 12 por ciento de los niños del
Distrito 9 pasaron las pruebas de lectura”, dijo
González, señalando que los que no podían leer
al nivel de grado inevitablemente reprobaron
también otras asignaturas.
Compartió relatos personales de las luchas
de su familia dentro de un triste sistema de
escuelas públicas con fondos insuficientes. El hijo
menor de González no contaba con los recursos
que necesitaba como estudiante de educación
especial, explicó, mientras que una inadecuada
preparación para los exámenes llevó a su hija a
fallar el examen Regents.
La madre preocupada y los miembros de los
grupos de defensa Comunidades de Nueva York
por el Cambio y la Alianza por la Educación de
Calidad, se pronunciaron el viernes 13 de marzo
en la Escuela de Derecho, Gobierno y Justicia del

otros funcionarios electos del Bronx para anunciar
la propuesta de un incremento “histórico” al

de presupuesto educativo que aumentó el

de millones de dólares, incluyendo mil millones al
financiamiento de la Campaña de Equidad Fiscal
(CFE por sus siglas en inglés).
Fundada en 1993 por el entonces concejal
de la ciudad Robert Jackson y Michael Rebell,

“Nuestros hijos no están fallando,
nosotros les estamos fallamos”,
exclamó el asambleísta Mark Gjonaj.
CFE comenzó como una coalición de padres,
educadores, abogados, miembros de la
comunidad y funcionarios electos, quienes
afirmaban que el estado de
Nueva York no financiaba
adecuadamente las escuelas
públicas, y por ende privaba a
los niños de su derecho a una
educación adecuada. CFE
presentó una demanda contra
el estado de Nueva York ese
mismo año.
Después de 13 años de
litigio, el caso se decidió en
favor de CFE.
Pero, a partir de 2015,
los defensores dicen
que el estado no ha
proporcionado todos los
fondos adeudados en virtud
de la demanda.
“Durante más de veinte años hemos luchado
por la equidad fiscal”, dijo el asambleísta Blake,
instando al gobernador Cuomo a tomar medidas
inmediatas e incluir los fondos propuestos en su
proyecto de presupuesto estatal 2015-2016.
“Es un error, es injusto. Los sueños han
permanecido demasiado tiempo siendo sueños.

para ofrecer programas de arte.
Además, los defensores dijeron que los
recursos podrían apoyar el Programa de
Renovación de Escuelas del alcalde Bill de Blasio
y la canciller Carmen Fariña, que tiene como
objetivo aumentar el rendimiento de algunas de
las escuelas de la ciudad que tienen problemas.
El asambleísta Víctor Pichardo hizo hincapié

“I am here today to do what is morally right
and legally obligated,” said Assemblymember
Mark Gjonaj, claiming that the state is treating
children of poor communities as “secondclass students.”
“We are not going to wait anymore,”
said Assemblymember José Rivera, whose
district is owed over $36 million in education
funding.
Rivera spoke out against the stigma of
schools labeled as “failing.” He argued that
the poor performance standards in many city
schools are due in part to the State’s failure to
meet its obligations under the law.
“The needs of school children are related
to a debt the State has,” said Rivera. “These
resources are necessary and we will use
them.”
Blake also condemned the use of the term
“failing” to describe struggling schools,
claiming that students, in turn, are stigmatized.
“We reject that language,” he said.
“Our children are not failing; we fail them,”
said Gjonaj. “We can’t expect them to be
tomorrow’s leaders if we don’t give them the
foundation.”
The increased funding, said the speakers,
would be used to reduce class sizes; increase
funding for Pre-Kindergarten, after-school,
ELL and ESL programs; and provide arts,

music, and athletic programming.
In addition, the advocates said resources
could support Mayor Bill de Blasio and
Chancellor Carmen Fariña’s School Renewal
Program, which aims to increase achievement
at some of the city’s struggling schools.
Assemblymember Victor Pichardo stressed
that providing adequate funding to city
schools was not only legally mandated but
also made economic sense.
“For every single dollar invested in
education we get three dollars back.”
González pledged that she would continue
to wage battle.
“It is our money,” she insisted. “Our
children need it.”

formally proposed raising
the state’s minimum wage
from its current $8.75 per
hour level to $10.50 by the
end of 2016. That would
make New York the state
with the highest statewide
minimum wage in the
nation. The Governor has
also proposed a new $11.50
minimum wage for New
York City.
“The minimum wage is very
simple,” said Cuomo on January
21st during his State of the State
address. “We believe if you work
full-time, you should be able to
pay the rent and pay for food
and not live in poverty. That’s the
basic promise of employment,
and we’re not there yet.”
Students are set to debate the
issue at this year’s Model Senate
Session.
“This is a very challenging
issue,” said Program Director
Dr. Anthony Maniscalco. “Far
from just bread-and-butter, the
question of minimum wage
requires wrangling with
not just economics,
but with questions of
fairness and social justice.
It asks students to wrestle
with the well-being of
their constituents, while
reflecting on the regional
and cultural differences.
In essence, we are
focusing on the idea of
building civic capacities.”
