Ceremony of Lehman College of the City
University of New York (CUNY) this past
Thurs., May 28th.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in
Sociology and was joined by her family
and friends.
Though Towns is widely known for spent
nearly two decades overseeing the vast
delivery, subscription, and maintenance
required to deliver tens of thousands of these
weekly bilingual newspapers throughout
two boroughs, she has also served in
management and administrative roles – and
has been a prolific and important contributor
to its pages with words and images.
In fact, the accomplished and talented
photographer intends on pursuing the visual
medium more avidly in the near future.

atimatou D. could barely stay still.
The Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter
School second grader beamed as she spoke.
“I am excited,” said Fatimatou. “We will
get to play, ride our bikes, and our scooters.”
She and her fellow classmates were
one quivering mass of anticipation as they
described what activities they’d likely pursue
the moment they could make their way across
the High Bridge’s pedestrian walkway.
This past Mon., Jun. 1st, the countdown
to the bridge’s official re-opening began at
a lively event and book reading held at the
school.

elected officials, and community leaders,
gathered for a reading of the picture book The
Lowdown on the High Bridge conducted by
its author, artist and Emmy Award-winning
actress Sonia Manzano.
“I’m Maria of Sesame Street,” she said
with a smile as she settled in to read. “I look
different in reality than on television.”
The Bronx native is an established writer
whose works include No Dogs Allowed and
The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano.
Her latest book is a collaborative effort
between Manzano and the Bronx Children’s
Museum and was conceived as a gift to the
borough’s children in honor of the story of the
167-year-old historic bridge.
The Lowdown on the High Bridge,
illustrated by Noelle S. Gibbons, will be
given during the month of June to over 3,000
students attending eight Highbridge schools
in which museum staff has spent the past two
years sharing lessons on art, local history and
the Harlem River.
The book features figures such as author
Edgar Allen Poe walking on the Bridge from
Manhattan to the Bronx.
The museum’s Executive Director Carla
Precht said it was important that local children
were reconnected to the history of their own
neighborhood.
“For generations, children living in the
Highbridge area of the Bronx were unaware
of the importance of this historic bridge,” said
Precht. “This book illuminates its magnificent
past and beauty.”

Honoring the Afro-Descendant Puerto Rican Legacy
Mayra Santos Febres, internationally-acclaimed
author and creator of Puerto Rico’s Festival de

of the diaspora, for a special evening of poetry
readings in honor of the Afro-descendant legacy
of Puerto Rican culture. The group includes

eople strive to eat healthy to
protect their wellbeing. But
did you know that in an era of
widely-available dieting advice
and multiple diet plans, some
people are taking healthy eating
to an extreme—to the point that
they are not getting properly
balanced nutrition?
This can lead to dangerous short and
long-term effects on one’s health.
Let’s clarify one of the most common
myths of healthy eating—sugar is not your
enemy.
Your body needs sugar as a source of
energy. Without sugar in the recommended
dose, your body will not function properly.
The secret is to determine how much sugar
you actually need to consume, not to entirely
eliminate it.
If you eliminate all fats and oils from your
diet, you risk harm to your skin and other
vital organs. Similarly, without the proteins
obtained from meat, your body will lack
nutrients for healthy hair and metabolism.
In a simple analogy, the human body is
like a sculpture made with “Lego” bricks. If
you remove one or more “Legos”, the entire
stack will lose its balance and fall.
Moderation is the key to avoiding
the dangers of extreme dieting. Get
informed about what amounts of food are
recommended for your height, ideal weight
and any existing health conditions such
as diabetes, and adjust food options and
portions accordingly. A registered dietitian
will be able to help you determine your
needs.
Plan your meals and make informed
choices, so that you can enjoy all foods in

Belmont is bringing Italian tradition back
to the Bronx with the Feast of Saint Anthony.
Starting Wed., Jun. 10th through Sun.,
Jun. 14th, the Feast of Saint Anthony will
feature live music, carnival games, rides, and
authentic Italian food. One of the highlights
of the feast will be the “giglio” – a custom,
hand-made wooden structure, measuring 50
feet high and weighing several tons. It takes
over 100 lifters, or paranza in Italian, to hoist
this enormous structure up on their shoulders
as they carry it through the streets while
performing various ritual maneuvers.
The “Dancing of the Giglio” will take place
at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on
the corner of East 187th Street and Belmont
Avenue on Sat., Jun. 13th at approximately 2
p.m.

Bronx River Fish Festival
Join the Bronx River Alliance on
Sat., Jun. 6th, at River Park, for its latest
environmental project, the Bronx River
Flotilla and Fish Festival. The Festival
comes at the end of the organization’s
latest work involving the community
in the inauguration of the first fish
ladder ever built in New York City. The
ladder marks the first time in centuries
that the alewife herring will be able to
migrate up the Bronx River to historic
spawning grounds.
The event will culminate with

Festival del Pescad en el Río
Bronx
Únase a la Alianza del Río Bronx el
sábado, 6 de junio en el Parque River,
para su último proyecto ambiental,
la Flotilla del Río Bronx y Festival
del Pescado. El festival llega al final
del último trabajo de la organización
envolviendo a la comunidad en la
inauguración de la primera escalera
jamás construida en la ciudad de Nueva
York. La escalera marca la primera vez
en siglos que el arenque será capaz de migrar del
Río Bronx a lugares históricos.
El evento culminará con una presentación
de baile de Davalois Fearon titulad ‘Consider
Fiesta de San Antonio
Belmont está llevando la tradición italiana de
vuelta al Bronx con la Fiesta de San Antonio.
Comenzando el miércoles, 10 de junio hasta el
domingo, 14 de junio, la Fiesta de San Antonio
presentará música en vivo, juegos de carnaval,
machinas y auténtica comida italiana.
Uno de los aspectos destacados de la fiesta lo
será el “giglio” – una estructura de madera hecha
a mano, que mide 50 pies de alto y pesa varias
toneladas. Necesita más de 100 levantadores, o
‘paranza’ en italiano, para levantar esta estructura
sobre sus hombros mientras la cargan a través
de las calles y van realizando varias maniobras
de rituales.

am a Bronx native,
daughter, sister, mother of
three beautiful Bronx babies,
photographer, writer and
motivator,” says contributor
Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican
descent, as she continues to
explore her hometown.
Here is her latest installment.
A few years ago I had the opportunity to
meet artist Guy Gonzales. We would later
discover we were neighbors, but because
with our hectic schedules, we don’t meet
up as often as we’d like.
Nonetheless, we both know we are only a
call away, and always make time to support
each other’s endeavors.
Naturally, I was excited to learn that he’d
recently received a Community Arts Grant
from the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA).
This past month, he held four “Global
Gupit Gupit Endangered Species”
workshops at the Poe Park Visitor Center.
Among those participating were P.S. 246
students who were English as a Second
Language (ELL) learners.
During the workshops, Gonzales
explained that the one-piece paper
sculpture technique he uses derives from
his own father, the late Ben A. Gonzales.
In his father’s native Philippine dialect of
Tagalog, “gupit” translates to “cut”.
The elder Gonzales created this technique
so that anyone, even those with limited art
experience, could find an outlet for their
creative expression. It is his son’s goal to
preserve and carry on his father’s technique.
Each week, students worked on representing
an endangered animal; these included sharks,
rhinoceros, tigers and elephants. They cut the
template, scored and folded the paper, and
colored it before bending it together into a
three-dimensional piece.
I joined in during the last workshop, during
which Gonzales reminded the kids which
lines to cut, which to score, which to fold.
I took a template, and began to cut
alongside a few students who were in the
midst of creating their own designs. I enjoyed
listening to the conversations, conducted
largely in Spanish, between the students as
they worked.
One excitedly shared news about the recent
arrival of puppies and his family soccer
outings. Another chimed in about his own
favorite sport- baseball- and said he could
not understand how it wasn’t everyone else’s
favorite, all while peppering his friend about
soccer.
One boy sat quietly adorning his elephant
with a Puerto Rican flag and a Dominican
flag, a decision another student questioned.
A third student noted that the artist had one
Puerto Rican parent, and a Dominican one.
This proved a satisfactory explanation, and
the conversation changed back to sports.
As they finished coloring and worked on
bending it all together, the conversation again
shifted. The group focused on why the animals
which they were creating were endangered.
“Tusks,” said one boy; “For money,” added
another.
A showcase of the group’s work is
scheduled for Sat., Jun. 6th at the Poe Park
Visitor Center, located at 2640 Grand
Concourse, between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

conocer al artista Guy Gonzales. Más tarde
descubrimos que éramos vecinos, pero debido a
nuestros horarios agitados no nos reuníamos con

tridimensional.
Me uní durante el último taller, durante el

reciente llegada de cachorros y sus salidas en

Livery cab industry announces historic policy reform

H
e drove to pick up a passenger
on a Soundview corner – and
was pierced in the chest with a
bullet.
It was the late 60’s, and being a livery cab
driver was risky business.
“It was very dangerous in those times,”
recalled Marcos de la Cruz, who immigrated
from Peru. He explained that the shooter,
a young man, was after another driver with
whom he had had an ongoing dispute, but
shot de la Cruz nonetheless.
De la Cruz survived the assault – and has
persevered in an industry he has committed
to.
“It is my passion,” said de la Cruz. “I do it
gladly, with love.”
He now heads a fleet of livery cars, and
hosts a daily radio show in which he responds
to others drivers’ questions and concerns,
particularly in reference to the industry’s rules
and regulations.
On Thurs., May 21st, de la Cruz joined
elected officials, community members,
livery base owners, and drivers to announce
a significant change in Taxi and Limousine
Commission (TLC) regulations that would
exempt drivers from having to pay “double
tickets” for infractions.

It is a common arrangement within the car
service industry for vehicle owners to both
drive their cars as cabdrivers and then lease
the same car to a fellow driver for a different
shift.
Under current TLC regulations, should
a driver commit a traffic infraction, such
as running a red light, both the owner of
the vehicle and the driver receive fines. In

addition, drivers accumulate points with every
infraction, which can lead to the revocation
of their licenses, and the subsequent loss of
income.
The “double ticket” has long been a
contentious issue for the livery cab industry,
whose work is based primarily in Northern
Manhattan and the outer boroughs. For years,
its members have charged that they have been
subjected to exorbitant ticketing and harsh

the local community schools and clubs
participated in the day’s relays, and received

Founded in 1999 by Susan Waterfall,
CityTrack offers a high-quality track and
field program to students from Harlem and
Washington Heights.
It was the latest momentous occasion in
CityTrack’s latest season, one in which the
number of participants almost doubled.

t used to be a dump.
Now, upon grounds that were once used as
a landfill, there is a multi-million dollar golf
course, developed by the Trump Organization.

course built since 1964 when Robert Moses
oversaw the opening of the Robert Trent
Jones Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn. Overlooking the Whitestone Bridge, the
18-hole golf course sits on a 222-acre field
that also features a clubhouse, a driving range,
a snack bar, and a gift store.

With New York State rent regulations
laws set to expire in days, elected officials,
community leaders and residents gathered for
an uptown housing forum at the Washington
Heights Academy this past Thurs., May 28th.
The gathering, hosted by State Senator
Adriano Espaillat, sought to brief residents on
affordable housing and rent regulation issues
– and what comes next.
The panel consisted of representatives
from different organizations who provided
an overview of current regulations, landlords’
responsibilities and tenants’ rights.
“It is important to fight,” said Rodrigo
Sánchez-Camus,
Supervising
Attorney
for the Northern Manhattan Improvement
Corporation (NMIC). “It is important to keep
informed in order to protect your rights.”
Topics covered on Thursday included
landlord’s harassment, lease renewals, and
illegal rental hikes.
The regulations are determined by
legislators in the State Assembly and Senate
and Governor Andrew Cuomo in Albany.
Approximately 2.5 million New Yorkers
live in rent-regulated housing, which includes
both “rent-controlled” and “rent-stabilized”
apartments.

building with fewer than six units, it is generally
removed from regulation. Rent-stabilized
apartments are in buildings built before 1974,
have six or more apartments, and the rent
upon moving in is below $2,500 per month.
Apartments can also become rent-stabilized
if a developer utilizes certain tax incentive
programs, including J-51 or 421-a.
According to the NYC Rent Guidelines
Board, as of 2011, rent-stabilized apartments
comprised approximately 59% of rental
apartments in the Bronx, 43% of apartments
in Brooklyn, 45% of Manhattan apartments,
42% of Queens apartments, and 15% of
Staten Island apartments.
The laws were last revisited by legislators
in 2011.
Then, landlords were allowed to deregulate
apartments when tenants’ rent and income
reach certain thresholds. Thresholds were
raised from $2,000 a month to $2,500 a
month – so that once the rent of a regulated
apartment hit $2,500, it became unregulated
– and the threshold of annual household
income rose from $200,000 from $175,000.
Also, landlords were compelled to document
more of the funding spent to improve rentstabilized apartments before looking to pass
those costs to renters.
Since the passage of those 2011 laws,
35,000 apartments have been deregulated.
And if no substantial changes in regulations
are put into effect by June’s deadline, it

“The reopening will enable the children to
enjoy a brighter future where they are able to
reclaim, and identify, with the past glory of
the High Bridge,” he said.
Completed in 1884, the High Bridge is the
oldest standing bridge in New York City. It
served as the first aqueduct to bring fresh
drinking water to the city and later as a tourist
pedestrian destination walkway.
But as bridge became obsolete over the
years, the High Bridge became a symbol of
blight.
In 2012, a $62 million renovation of the
bridge and adjacent areas began.

It is slated to re-open later this month
on Wed., Jun. 10th, and will serve mainly
as a connecting pathway for cyclists and

Espaillat cast the legislative battle
ahead as one dominated by politics and
the real estate sector’s special interests,
and predicted that the passage of stricter
rent laws would be challenged by the
Republican-dominated State Senate.
“Landlords have invested millions of
dollars in the last elections to maintain a
majority in the Senate,” charged Espaillat.
Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez
agreed.
“The resources that the real estate sector
[have] invested in politics puts us on an
uphill struggle,” said Rodríguez.

proactive and call their legislators, and to
join rallies that the Met Council is helping to
organize, including one planned in the state’s
capital on June 15th.
“We are going to escalate this fight,” she

Sisters Cultural and Community Center.
“There is no excuse not to be in Albany on June
15th. We need to strengthen our community
and the only way to do so is to mobilize.”
Espaillat concurred that it was critical to
keep the pressure on.
“We are going to keep on losing rentstabilized apartments [if we don’t act],” said
Espaillat. “Our voices have to be heard.”

to get natural fruit sugars from eating the fruit
itself instead of drinking fruit juice.
And beware of sugar substitutes. These are
meant as an aide to help you decrease your
sugar intake. They are not meant to replace
the same amount of sugar that you were taking
before. Your goal should be to eliminate your
excess added-sugar intake. Once you have
reached your goal, it is recommended that
you discontinue use of sugar substitutes all
together.
In terms of fats, eat foods rich in Omega
3 and Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated
fats, which are commonly found in olive oil,
peanut oil, walnuts, avocados, tofu and fatty
fish like tuna, sardines and salmon. Stay away
from deep fried foods, baked pastries and
other foods rich in trans and saturated fats like
high-fat cuts of meat, cheese, ice cream, and
whole-fat diary.
To keep you from overeating, use an average
size plate and divide it into four quarters. One
quarter should be filled with protein, another
with grains and the two remaining with fruits
and vegetables. You also add one cup of lowfat dairy.
Healthy eating is closely connected to
our quality of life. So make sure that your
healthy eating is combined with a healthy
lifestyle, enough sleep and exercise, and that
your eating plan is realistic, enjoyable and
sustainable in the long-term.

ricas en grasas trans y saturadas como cortes de
carne altos en grasa, queso, helado y productos
lácteos con grasa entera.
Para prevenir que comas en exceso, usa un
plato tamaño medio y divídelo en cuatro cuartos.
Un cuarto debe estar lleno con proteína, otro con
granos y los dos restantes con frutas y vegetales.
También añade una taza de un lácteo bajo en
grasa.

ix years ago, Colleen Kim
was employed as a software
engineer in San Diego, putting her
degree in aerospace engineering to
work.
She was engaged to be married and
working for one of the leading manufacturers
of mobile communications.
But the University of California graduate
wanted to keep learning. In the evenings,
she continued to take classes in a range of
subjects, including biology, a subject she
found fun for the first time in her life. She
wanted specifically to know more about
healthcare.
When a friend achieved a long-coveted
goal of a slot in pharmacy school, she became
curious and began to explore the pharmacy
profession.
“I was fascinated with tissues and cells and
wanted to understand more about the body
and the healthcare field. I decided to take my
career in a new direction and go to pharmacy
school,” says Kim.
Last week, Kim – a new mom with her
husband and seven-month-old in tow, and a
part-time position as a pharmacist awaiting her
at a major New York City hospital pharmacy
upon receiving her license – graduated from
Touro College of Pharmacy (TCOP).
She was awarded the prestigious
“Excellence in Public Health Service Award”
from the United States Public Health Service

The USPHS award was presented at a
banquet on the eve of commencement by
Liatte Krueger, Pharm.D., USPHS.
“This annual award recognizes a student
who has demonstrated a commitment to
public health through pharmacy practice,”
said Krueger, adding Kim “has displayed
commitment to public health and community
participation.”
Krueger cited a long list of Kim’s activities
including chairing the Student National
Pharmaceutical Associations’ “Remember
the Ribbon” HIV/ADS Committee; earning
recognition for Touro with its participation
in the largest number of HIV/AIDS events
among the 23 pharmacy schools in the
northeast that make up Region 1; and for
having the greatest number of students and
Walgreens pharmacies participate in HIV/
AIDS community events among all pharmacy
schools in the United States.
She also cited Kim’s work with TCOP’s
Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention
Education Program, which educates high
school students in Staten Island about the
consequences of prescription drug abuse, and
her leadership of Touro’s chapter of the

pharmacy, a beauty supply, and a clothing store.
“The on-the-ground customized support
provided by SBS client managers will help
New York City business owners avoid fines
and violations, so they can spend more time
running and growing their business, and less
time navigating government,” said TorresSpringer.
In addition to the outreach campaign,
Small Business First offers free services to
help small businesses succeed at every stage
– whether they are starting, operating or
growing. Services include business courses,
access to capital, legal assistance, employee
training and more.
Westchester Square business owners said
they were appreciative for the direct efforts.
Ekue, a Nigerian immigrant, said that in
seeking greater financial independence, she quit
her position as a store manager at Macy’s and
decided to open her own business.
Though business had been “tough,” she said
she was determined to persevere – and the
Commissioner’s visit strengthened her resolve.
“It shows that we matter,” said Ekue. “We
count.”

TLC authorities are less likely to grant a fair
hearing and dismiss fines.
“At the precinct, you can always dispute
tickets and even have them dismissed in
court,” argued de la Cruz. “With TLC, tickets
are over $100 and drivers always end up
losing.”
Industry leaders, including the Livery Base
Owners Association (LBO), have sought to
address the concerns with new leadership
within the de Blasio administration, including
TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi.
Senator Espaillat said that the previous
regulations, which penalizes twice for
the same infraction, was at odds with the
American justice system.
“Double-ticketing goes against the
fundamental concept of this nation,” said
the Senator. He added that an average 45
licenses were revoked monthly based on the
accumulation of points.
“The rules promulgated by the TLC make
no sense,” added Assemblymember Luis
Sepulveda. “We want to make sure that these
rules don’t become a piggy bank for the city.”
The elected officials, industry leaders
and advocates have engaged in roundtable
discussions for months with members of the
TLC and de Blasio administration.
On Thursday, they gathered to announce
that there was change ahead.
Under new TLC regulations, tickets issued
for running a red light will now be sent to the
car’s owner, and he or she has 30 days to send
proof of payment to the TLC. The ticket – and
the charge – will not be duplicated.
“This is a historic day,” said LBO
representative Cira Angeles, who owns

Crespo called for unity.

“We have been working together trying to
alleviate some of the issues,” noted Jeffrey
Roth, TLC’s Deputy Commissioner of Policy
and External Affairs.
Assemblymember Marcos Crespo, who
also serves as Chair of the Puerto Rican/
Latino Task Force, remarked that a united
front was crucial in securing further reform.

– and the Trump Organization was chosen in
2010 to operate the facility.
Critics have charged that the taxpayer
funds should have been used for park projects
throughout the borough that would served
more of its residents, many of whom are
unlikely to look to pay the expensive fees.
Nonetheless, Borough President Rubén
Díaz Jr. – and confessed golf aficionado –
lauded the development.
“We managed to transform what was once
a landfill, an environmental disaster, into a
world-class amenity,” said Díaz. “This new
golf course will lead to an increase in both
tourism and economic development in our
borough.”
Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver agreed
that the borough would benefit.
“This official opening of the new premier
public golf course gives us the opportunity
to showcase the Bronx on a national stage,”
he noted. “[This] will offer visitors a unique
recreational experience [and] free lessons
for children throughout the summer, and
has transformed the area into a regional
destination.”
The visit by Nicklaus was more than
ceremonial.

the Congressional Gold Medal, and Golf
Magazine’s 2014 Architect of the Year, he

golf courses Worldwide; his firm has created

The debut marked the first public course
to open in New York City in more than 50
years – and is the only tournament-quality
golf course in the city, which is exactly how
Nicklaus had envisioned it.
“If you are going to have a golf course that
has the ability to host a high-profile national
or international event, you have to have some
spice in it,” he said. “Our goal as a public golf
course is to have it play well on a daily basis.
But when asked to host an event, we believe
we have the ability to move to the back tees,
hide the pins, and create a test of golf fitting of
any tournament or championship.”
While Monique Johnson, President of
the Throggs Neck Houses Residents and
community activist, acknowledged that she
was not as enamored – yet – of the sport, she
said, like many local residents, she was game.
The proximity of the course, she opined,
might well draw Bronxites more inclined to
head out for baseball or basketball.
“It is a good opportunity to learn the art of
golf,” she observed.
More importantly, Johnson was pleased
that, in partnership with the Bronx H.I.R.E.
program, which is sponsored by State
Senator Jeff Klein and the Bronx Chamber
of Commerce, the new course would provide
employment to local youths as caddies.
“We were able to employ 15 of our youths,”
said Johnson proudly.
After the opening ceremony, Trump and
Nicklaus lined up to hit ceremonial tee shots
off the 18th tee.
Nicklaus beamed as his ball sailed through
the air.

atraer a residentes del Bronx más inclinados a

Más importante aún, Johnson se congratuló
porque, en colaboración con el
programa H.I.R.E. del Bronx, el
cual es patrocinado por el senador
estatal Jeff Klein y la Cámara de
Comercio del Bronx, el nuevo campo
proporcionará empleo a los jóvenes
de la localidad como caddies.
“Pudimos emplear a 15 de
nuestros jóvenes”, dijo Johnson
orgullo.
