SEPTEMBER 2014
WELCOME WOLVES!
Hello! My name is Cindy Kramer and I am delighted to be returning to Aberarder for my second year as your
principal. For those families who are new to the Aberarder community, I’d like to extend a warm welcome.
Here at Aberarder, there is a dedicated team of individuals who will be striving to maximize success for every
child. We encourage parents to be involved with their children’s education. There are so many ways to be
involved at Aberarder. One way is through frequent communication between the home and school. Sending a
note in the school planner requesting a phone call from the teacher is one of the most efficient ways to
communicate. Another way to be involved with your school is to volunteer in a classroom or help with the
various activities of the Accents to Aberarder group.

ABERARDER ACCENTS – OUR SCHOOL COUNCIL
The purpose of the School Council is to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education
system to parents. Our first Accentsl meeting for this school year will be held on Thursday, September 4th, 2014 at 6:30
p.m. in the library. We are hoping to encourage some new members this year. Feel free to come out and see what the
group is all about. This strong partnership between the home and school benefits all of our students.
SAFE ARRIVAL POLICY
We have a process in place to ensure the safe arrival of all students. Please call the school if your child is absent in the
morning or the afternoon (unless a note has already been sent). Our office staff will be available from 8:15 a.m. on to take
your calls. We also have a 24-hour answering machine so you may call any time, day or night. Calls home are made for
all unexplained absences. If there is no answer, calls will be made to a parent’s/ guardian’s workplace or emergency
numbers. Please help us by contacting the school before our morning or afternoon bell rings. Notes from home are
needed to excuse a child early from class.
SCARVES AND DRAWSTRINGS
Scarves and drawstrings could present a safety hazard on the playground. Scarves must be tucked into coats and
drawstrings must be tucked in, securely sewn to the coat or cut off.
SCHOOL BUSSES
For bussing and weather information, Aberarder Central School is located in Zone 1. Bussing information is available on
the website www.schoolbusinfo.com. Buses cancelled due to snow do not pick up students at the end of the day. Buses
cancelled due to fog will return to the school to take students home.
Only regular eligible riders or courtesy seat students have permission to ride the bus that they are assigned to.
Due to insurance and safety issues, permission will not be extended to students who are not listed on the bus
lists. Please do not send a note to the bus drivers or principal asking for a change to the drop off location.
TERRY FOX RUN/WALK
On Wednesday, September 24th, students will be participating in the Terry Fox Run/Walk in our yard, starting at 2:15 p.m.
More information will follow regarding this event.
STUDENT PLANNERS
Students will be using a “Student Planner” to help them organize their time and homework assignments. Students are
expected to complete homework each night. This may include assigned homework, review of subjects, reading, projects,
test preparation and/or work completion. Although the school will continue to subsidize the planners, we are asking
students to bring in $3.00 to help to cover the total cost. It is our expectation that students will take care of their planners,
take them home every night to show their parents and bring them back to school each morning.
SCHOOL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
During this month we will start practicing our emergency procedures drills for fire, tornadoes, as well as procedures for
shelter in place, and hold and secure. We will continue practicing emergency drills in October as well.
FALL PHOTOS
Please mark your calendars for our fall photo day. The photographers from LifeTouch will be here at Aberarder on Thurs.
Oct. 9th for kindergarten through grade eight students. More information will be sent home closer to the date.

PHOTOGRAPHING, AUDIOTAPING, VIDEOTAPING AND FILMING OF STUDENTS
Throughout the year routine school activities such as plays, field trips, athletic functions, class photos, etc. occur. It is at
times such as these that the public media organizations may be present at these events photographing, audiotaping,
videotaping and/or filming our students. Parents/guardians are asked to please read the attached form and sign the
permission section.
STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The Lambton Kent District School Board does not insure students. For your convenience, the Board has made
arrangements for families to voluntarily purchase student accident insurance through the Kids Plus Accident Insurance
program, underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc.
Kids Plus Accident Insurance offers protection against the unexpected costs of injury from accidents and is especially for
families who:
o do not have medical or dental plans
o have limited plans, as it may help supplement health and dental benefits, or
o have active children who enjoy sports and outdoor activities
Information pamphlets have been sent home for families to review the packages, pricing, etc. For complete plan details,
please visit www.kidsplus.ca.
IN CLOSING…..
I am looking forward to productive year focused on student engagement and learning.
Yours in Education,
Cindy Kramer - Principal
