The Sacraments: Fountains of Grace Dear Parishioners of Saint Andrew: Last week there was standing room only at most Masses. Although the crowds are significantly smaller this weekend, our parish continues to grow. At the Easter Vigil I was honored to baptized twenty new Catholics, two adult and 18 children. I congratulate all those who received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist on that sacred night. I also wish to thank the parents of the children who received the sacraments for their desire to hand on the Catholic faith to their children and for giving them a good example of living the faith. I also express my sincere gratitude to Ms. Mary Forney who as Director of Faith Formation led these catechumens in their spiritual journey to the sacraments of initiation. I also thank Mrs. Beatriz Castro, our Director of Religious Education, and the catechists (teachers) who guided the children as they learned about our faith and prepared them for the reception of the sacraments. In addition to these new Catholics, we look forward to the reception of Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist by another 9 parishioners who will receive these sacraments at the hands of Archbishop Wenski next Saturday. Archbishop Wenski will also be administering the Sacrament of Confirmation to 150 students from our school and religious education program. In my name and on behalf of all in the parish, I extend my congratulations to these adults and students who have been preparing for the reception of Confirmation. It will be an honor for us to welcome Archbishop Wenski to the parish on Saturday. The Easter season is a time of living out the mystery of new life with the Risen Christ. For forty days in Lent we reflected on the need for conversion in our lives so as to live ever more faithfully and joyfully the life of a disciple of Christ Jesus. Now during the Easter season, the Church celebrate for fifty days the gift of eternal life we received at baptism and which is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation and nurtured by the regular reception of the Holy Eucharist. These sacraments not only initiate us into the Body of Christ, they invigorate and enliven our living of the faith in fidelity to the Gospel and in communion with the Catholic Church. During this Easter season, I encourage all of us to reflect on the gift of faith we have received from the Lord and which is sustained by the sacraments. For example, do you know the date of your baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion? Why not celebrate these dates annually? Parents might make it a practice to celebrate their children’s anniversary of baptism with a special family meal, as is done to celebrate their birthdays. You might also read those sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which teach about the meaning and importance of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Finally, you might read and pray with the Scripture passages of the baptism of the Lord, the feast of Pentecost and the institution of the Holy Eucharist. On another note, I take this opportunity to renew my expression of sympathy at the death of Bishop William Friend. Bishop Friend, a native of Miami, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham in 1959 and then chosen by Pope Saint John Paul II as the Bishop of Shreveport, Louisiana in 1986. In retirement, Bishop Friend moved to Coral Springs to be close to his sister Jean Boccard and his nephews and niece. Bishop Friend died peacefully at his home on the morning of Holy Thursday, the day on which the Church commemorates the Lord’s institution of the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Holy Orders at the Last Supper. This year, that day also was the tenth anniversary of the death of Pope Saint John Paul II. A funeral Mass was offered here at St Andrew on Tuesday morning by Bishop Michael Duca of the Diocese of Shreveport. Another Funeral Mass will be offered in the Cathedral of Saint John Berchmans in Shreveport this Tuesday and Bishop Friend will be interred in the cathedral cemetery. Requiescat in pace. All the sacraments are fountains of grace for the Christian faithful and they accompany us along the journey of our lives. From baptism to our funeral Mass, we walk by faith and, like St Thomas the Apostle in the Gospel today, we acclaim Jesus Christ to be “my Lord and my God”. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family with His love! Requiescat in pace. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. Brief commentary: Happy Easter! It has been said that, “every Sunday is an echo of Easter Sunday.” It is the Christian “day of the Lord,” it is “the day the Lord has made…[in which] we rejoice and are glad,” for it was early in the morning prior to sunrise on the first day of the week that Jesus Christ vanquished the power of death and rose gloriously from the tomb. So deep and complete is the divine mercy that every act of God is an act of mercy, from Creation to the new creation of Resurrection. God is life-giving love. Divine Mercy Sunday affirms the Easter message that the underlying attitude of God toward all of his creation is merciful love. Because of this love God’s Son gave the total gift of himself from conception to death on a cross to open for all the fullness of salvation. In today’s gospel the risen Christ appears to his disciples with the gift of his risen presence, his peace and his Spirit; and he entrusts to them the mission of mercy and forgiveness by which the power of evil and death continue to be vanquished. They cannot help but to “rejoice.” They would never be the same again…and neither would the lives of so many who would “come to believe without seeing.” Today we, like Thomas, touch his wounds and ‘we are healed by them’. We too exclaim in awe and in deep gratitude, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus Christ continues to breath his breath of life, his Spirit, in us, in our Church, in our world, and empowers us for the mission of reconciliation to the people of our times. In a world so marked by mercilessness and pitilessness – as we are witnessing in the brutal persecutions of Christians and minorities across Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Libya and so many other places, and as evident in the indifference toward the poor, by violence of so many kinds, by the dehumanization of the unborn child, by prejudice, racism and sexism – Christians realize how much the world needs mercy! When Jesus commissions his disciples to forgive sins, he is also telling them to be agents of mercy in the world. Today we need to pray for victims of hatred, selfishness and indifference, but we also will ‘pray for our enemies, for those who persecute us’, as Jesus himself taught us to do and as he himself did from the cross. We have to believe that people – even the most despicable – can change, for we ourselves were once “foolish, disobedient, hateful…[until] the grace of God appeared” (Titus). Like Ezekiel we know that “God does not want the death of the sinner, but that he turns from his wicked ways…” Let us pray with passion for the protection of our persecuted sisters and brothers, that both the Lord and the nations will come to their swift assistance; and let us pray for the conversion of our oppressors and our world. Jesus Christ, crucified and gloriously risen from the dead, is the divine power to subvert and defeat all evil with mercy. +O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has opened for us the fullness of your divine mercy, grant that through the merits of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection we may receive your mercy in times of need, become instruments of mercy in this world, and reach the goal of your divine mercy, which is eternal life with you, who are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Today’s reading offers significant messages: • Divine Mercy Sunday on the second Sunday of Easter inspires us to rejoice and trust in God’s merciful love, so ultimately expressed in the saving passion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. • Jesus’ gift of the Spirit to his disciples commissions and empowers them (and all Christians) to be missionaries of God’s merciful redeeming love in the world. • Our world needs God’s mercy. Persecuted Christians need mercy in action, through the active protection of the nations. The oppressors of the world need our merciful prayers, that they will experience a profound conversion and reject their evil and turn from death to life. Jesus is the risen One who subverts evil with mercy. For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings. • How do I witness to the Gospel of Jesus through words and through deeds? • Is prayer the breath and lifeblood of my relationship with God? How can I develop a more consistent and deeper life of prayer? • How am I being a missionary of the Gospel? Jesús repitió: “Paz a vosotros. Luego dijo a Tomás: “Trae tu dedo, aquí tienes mis manos; trae tu mano y métela en mi costado; y no seas incrédulo, sino creyente.” Contestó Tomás: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” Jesús le dijo: “¿Porque me has visto has creído? Don’t you wish you could live in a world like this? You can! Jesus gave us the gift of peace and a roadmap for peace-building – the Ten Commandments. When you feel overwhelmed by the complexity and magnitude of the injustices in our world, take comfort. No single person is called to solve all the problems. “God makes three requests of his children: Do the best you can, where you are, with what you have, now.” ~African American Proverb "If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one." ~ Mother Teresa You can do the best you can, where you are, with what you have, by supporting Catholic Charities. Can you imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first community of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s children seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differences—differences among religions among races, between genders, and among economic classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours.
