This property where we worship was originally developed by
Valley Congregational Church. The community center
(across Easter Lane) was constructed in 1924, the classrooms
in 1948 and the sanctuary in 1949. HSoH rented space in 2002
and purchased the property in 2004. We are grateful to Valley
Congregational families who prepared this facility to serve the
Body of Christ in perpetuity.

THIS WEEK’S LESSON
Bread of Life / Pan de Vida
Exodus 16:1-16; Psalm 146; 1 Corinthians 11:17-33; John 6:25-51
Jesus was a radical being, not going along with the crowd
and not politically correct. He had a mission to save
humanity and was true to the God’s script. Today those
called ‘Christians’ are careful not to alienate friends and
family by strict adherence to Christ’s teachings.
One of the most difficult of Jesus’ teachings was that He
was the bread of life which is celebrated as Eucharist or
Communion. Christian churches differ in their beliefs:
Catholics - transubstantiation (complete change into actual body and
blood of Christ); Orthodox - divine mystery; Lutherans consubstantiation (Christ's body and blood are present); Calvinists –
Receptionism (Christ is not literally but spiritually present); and Baptists
– memorialism (remembrance of Christ's suffering and reminder of His
power to overcome sin and death).
In the Old Testament, we hear of God feeding the Jews
after their Exodus from Egypt: “I have heard the grumbling of
the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the
morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am
the Lord your God.” We fellow-grumblers continue to be fed
by God but in a more powerful way – through His Son.
David’s Psalm reemphasizes God’s provision: “He upholds
the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.”
Paul witnessed the early church corrupting their
reenactment of the Lord’s Supper: “So then, whoever eats the
bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be
guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the
bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink
without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on
themselves.” Have we improved?
John’s Gospel alone provides the most eloquent teaching
of Christ regarding His eternal presence: “Very truly I tell you,
the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.
49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which
anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that
came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live
forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of
the world.”
Jesus appears to be teaching cannibalism, but instead He
gives us a memorial service that recognizes the suffering
and death He endured to pay the price of our sins. His flesh
was punished yet He lives! Jesus asks that we remember
this often in a timeless ritual initiated at the Last Supper.

Jesús era un radical, no trataba con la multitud y no era
políticamente correcto. Él tenía una misión para salvar la
humanidad y fue fiel a lo que Dios lo envió. Hoy los
llamados ‘cristianos’ tienen cuidado de no hacer que sus
amigos o familia se enojen por el respeto estricto a las
enseñanzas de Cristo.
Uno de los más difíciles de las enseñanzas de Jesús es
que Él era el pan de vida que se celebra como Eucaristía o
Comunión. Las iglesias cristianas difieren en sus creencias:
Católicos - transubstanciación (cambio completo al cuerpo y sangre de
Cristo); ortodoxa - misterio divino; Luteranos - consustanciación
(cuerpo y sangre de Cristo están presentes); Calvinistas Recepcionismo (Cristo no es literalmente pero espiritualmente
presente); y Bautistas - memorialismo (recuerdo del sufrimiento de
Cristo y recordatorio de su poder para vencer al pecado y la muerte).
En el Antiguo Testamento, escuchamos de que Dios
alimenta a los judíos después de su éxodo de Egipto: "Han
llegado a mis oídos las murmuraciones de los israelitas. Diles
que antes de que caiga la noche comerán carne, y que mañana
por la mañana se hartarán de pan. Así sabrán que yo soy el
Señor su Dios." Nosotros compañeros de murmuradores
continuamos a ser alimentado por Dios pero de una forma
más eficaz, a través de su Hijo.
El Salmo de David refuerza la provisión de Dios: "El
Señor hace justicia a los oprimidos, da de comer a los
hambrientos."
Pablo fue testigo de la corrupción de la primera iglesia en
revivir la Cena del Señor: "Por lo tanto, cualquiera que coma
el pan o beba de la copa del Señor de manera indigna, será
culpable de pecar contra el cuerpo y la sangre del Señor. 28 Así
que cada uno debe examinarse a sí mismo antes de comer el pan
y beber de la copa. 29 Porque el que come y bebe sin discernir el
cuerpo, come y bebe su propia condena." ¿Lo hemos
mejorado?
Solamente el Evangelio de San Juan es más elocuente en
presentar la enseñanza de Cristo acerca de Su presencia
eterna: "Ciertamente les aseguro que el que cree tiene vida
eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Los antepasados de ustedes
comieron el maná en el desierto, y sin embargo murieron. 50 Pero
éste es el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él, no muere.
51
Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. Si alguno come de este
pan, vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne, que daré para
que el mundo viva."
Jesús parece enseñar canibalismo, pero en lugar de esto,
nos da un servicio conmemorativo que reconoce Su
sufrimiento y muerta que aguanto para pagar el precio de
nuestros pecados. Su carne fue castigado ¡sin embargo
vive! Jesús pide que lo recordemos a menudo en un eterno
ritual iniciado en la Última Cena.
La comunidad de Espíritu Santo de Esperanza le invita
a continuar su viaje espiritual con nosotros como Jesús
invita: “Venga.”

Christian History /
Kiyoshi Watanabe's brother gave him the Bible: "See what you can make
of it."
The Bible words fascinated Kiyoshi. Although the stories of Jesus were
difficult, he was intrigued by the verse: "Man shall not live by bread alone but
by every word that proceeds out of God's mouth." In Nanataki, Japan there
were no Christians that could explain these words to him.
When Kiyoshi completed education Nanataki , he got a job in another city
and attended school where a Lutheran minister, Yamauchi, explained it to
him.
Kiyoshi understood he must reject his family's Buddhism, but they agreed
to allow his baptism. His brother refused Christianity but paid Kiyoshi's for
theological seminary.
As a pastor, Kiyoshi married Shigaru. Their first two children died but they
clung to the Lord for support. When Shigaru died at child birth of their fifth
child, devastated Kiyoshi trusted God and uncharacteristically raised the
baby himself.
Then he met and married a kindergarten teacher named Mitsuko.
Kiyoshi pastored in Hiroshima and in 1935 went to study at Gettysburg
Seminary where he was accepted as "John."
When he returned home, Japan was preparing for war so the government
unsuccessfully tried forcing churches under one state denomination. Kiyoshi
worked as a teacher but when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor he was called by
the military to interpret in a Hong King prison camp where Japanese cruelty
horrified him. When he witnessed torture he cried and prayed to God.
Although loyal to Japan, as a Christian he had to help his enemies and was
threatened for doing so. He said "I do nothing. It is God who does it. He only
uses me."
Kiyoshi smuggled medicines to the prisoners and saved his rations to help
a family outside the prison. When he refused to beat prisoners, he was sent
to work at a prison hospital, and when he was kind to the prisoners was sent
to a work camp and was stripped of his uniform. His letters home were
constant prayers.
On August 6, 1945, a Lutheran chaplain prayed over the crew of the Enola
Gay as it left the USA carrying the atomic bomb named Little Boy which
destroyed Hiroshima. Kiyoshi lost his wife and oldest daughter by that bomb.

pero se aferraban al Señor para asistencia. Cuando Shigaru murió en parto de
su quinto hijo, Kiyoshi devastado confió en Dios y creo a su propio bebé.
Entonces conoció y se casó con una maestra de infantes llamado Mitsuko.
Kiyoshi pastoreaba en Hiroshima y en 1935 fue a estudiar a Gettysburg
