The Mercy of God
Dear Friends,
often exhibited it in his dealings with others. Pope Francis has made
“mercy” a term synonymous with his pontificate. Probably much like
his predecessor Peter, he has experienced conversion, mercy and the
remission of his own sins. I find that inspirational, because for so many
it is hard to even admit that we actually do sin, and actually do need
conversion, and actually do need to experience the mercy of God. And
if we can do that some of us struggle with the concept of anyone – even
God – being able to forgive us. Francis tells us that God never tires of
forgiving us. He is so convinced of the mercy of God that he, just last
Sunday, announced an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, to begin on
December eighth of this year.
Happy Easter! We gather this week to celebrate
the third Sunday of Easter. As we do this, the Gospel
gives us another post-resurrection appearance of
Jesus. In fact we hear some of the final words that
Luke has Jesus say. Immediately before he takes
them to Bethany, the place of the Ascension, Jesus
tells his disciples, and Luke allows us to hear the
words today, “You are witnesses of these things.”
As I reflect on that sentence from the final chapter of Saint Luke’s
Gospel, I think of the many witnesses we need to thank for allowing us
to know the details of our salvation history. Throughout the Gospels,
we read that the disciples were far from perfect. They often let Jesus
down and more often than not didn’t really know what Jesus was
using them to do. But because they received the Holy Spirit that Jesus
promised would come, they somehow, despite their own physical and
moral weakness, mustered the strength to be witnesses. They did as
the Lord commanded them to do; they preached of the suffering, death
and resurrection of Jesus. They called people to repentance and told of
the forgiveness the Lord offers. People heard their message, and many
followed them. We hear of their great success in the Easter season’s first
readings that come from the Acts of the Apostles.
The “Bull of Indiction”, the document announcing the jubilee year
provides great spiritual reading. I read it this week. I will share with you
just one of scores of paragraphs of Pope Francis’ beautiful writing. It
gives great food for thought.
I present, therefore, this Extraordinary Jubilee Year dedicated to living out
in our daily lives the mercy which the Father constantly extends to all of us. In
this JubileeYear, let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of throwing open
the doors of his heart and repeats that he loves us and wants to share his love
with us. The Church feels the urgent need to proclaim God’s mercy. Her life is
authentic and credible only when she becomes a convincing herald of mercy. She
knows that her primary task, especially at a moment full of great hopes and signs
of contradiction, is to introduce everyone to the great mystery of God’s mercy by
contemplating the face of Christ. The Church is called above all to be a credible
witness to mercy, professing it and living it as the core of the revelation of Jesus
Christ. From the heart of the Trinity, from the depths of the mystery of God, the
great river of mercy wells up and overflows unceasingly. It is a spring that will
never run dry, no matter how many people approach it. Every time someone is
in need, he or she can approach it, because the mercy of God never ends. The
profundity of the mystery surrounding it is as inexhaustible as the richness which
springs up from it.
Today’s selection from the Acts of the Apostles portrays a confident
Peter. Just three weeks ago, in the Passion Gospels we watched as Peter
denied Jesus three times. We sensed his fear and self-protective stance.
We heard him shout, “I do not know the man!” Today he is standing firm
and courageous. He confronts the leaders of the people and calls them
to conversion. Having experienced a conversion himself, and having
received the Holy Spirit, he lost his fear and selfishness and began really
living his life for Jesus. He invited others to do the same. Once converted
himself, he challenged others, even some of Jesus’ most powerful
detractors to do the same. He tells them (and us), “Be converted and
your sins will be wiped away.” That’s a pretty nice promise.
Let’s get ready for the year of mercy! Let’s let mercy come alive
in us.
People believed that promise of the remission of sins, first spoken
by Jesus and repeated by Peter and the other disciples, and handed
down from generation to generation. Jesus invited, throughout his
earthly ministry, all people to trust in the mercy of God and to be
merciful as God himself is merciful. He spoke of it often and even more
Happy Easter!
Our Mission:
Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and
service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

THE YEAR OF THE SACRAMENTS
Pope Francis’ Vision of Healing and Communion
(JULY 2014 - JUNE 2015)
Parish Announcements
SUFFER
The Martyrology is a thick book that contains
entries for every day of the year. Each day lists
the men and women, boys and girls across two
thousand years who have given their lives in witness to their faith
in Jesus Christ. It is an impressive assembly of countless witnesses
to the faith. Most probably, we will not be called to shed our blood
in witness to our faith. We will, most definitely, have to suffer in
some way because of our faith in Jesus Christ. In the Gospels, Jesus
clearly tells his disciples that there is a cost in following him. Of
course, they will be joyful and full of hope in him, but they will also
endure the difficulties of misunderstanding, contempt, perhaps even
persecution. In short, suffering is an inevitable part of discipleship.
To support us in our suffering, he gives us his Holy Spirit in the
sacrament of Confirmation.
JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENTS
Many of the students in both our school and Religious Education program
are in the final stages of preparing to receive Sacraments in the first week
of May. First Communions will be celebrated at the 5pm Mass on Saturday,
May 2nd and the 9:45am, 11:30am & 6:30pm Masses on Sunday, May 3rd.
Confirmation will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday, May 6th. Please keep
these students in your prayers during these final weeks and consider joining
us at one or more of the Masses to share their Sacramental joy!
SUMMER ON THE SQUARE
Save the Date! Summer on the Square will be held on Saturday, June
13th. We will begin with an outdoor Mass at 4pm, and the fun will continue
throughout the evening with foods from around the world, various musical
performances on the Church steps, and games and activities for the kids!

Catholic Social Teaching Principle: Care for God’s Creation
In Genesis, we are told that God has given us seed bearing plants, livestock,
birds in the sky and green plants for food. This was the beginning; this is
how it was intended for us. Our greatest act as Christians it to care for the
earth and in return the earth will take care of us. Destroying and abusing
the environment truly goes against everything we learned in Genesis. God
gave us life, in many forms, and all forms of life are worth saving. When we
walk, instead of drive, bring our own bags to the grocery store, recycle and
conserve energy we are respecting an amazing gift that was given to us by
God. Please look within yourself and make decisions that benefit the earth,
in turn they will benefit you and your health.

Mother’s Day Collection
May 10, 2015
Eva is doing all she can to raise her grandchild alone on a limited
income. She called Catholic Charities when she couldn’t afford to
fix her plumbing. We made the home repair, and invited her to our
caregiver support group. She was one of the 398,078 seniors we
helped last year.
April 22 is Earth Day, please do not look at this day as a “hippy” movement
but as a day to respect the very basics that God has given us. In the beginning
God created the heavens, the earth and all living creatures. God blessed
them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and
subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living
creature that moves on the ground.”
Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help seniors
live in comfort. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net.

La Misericordia de Dios
Queridos Amigos,
la fuerza para ser testigos. Ellos hicieron lo que el Señor les mandó a hacer;
Invitó a
generación a generación.
