ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Fourth Sunday of Lent March 15, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 344-7622 Phone (650) 344-4830 Fax www.stmatthew-parish.org MASSES/MISAS Daily Masses/Misas Diarias: 6:30am (except Saturday), 12:05pm Saturday/Sábado: 5:00pm, 7:00pm (Español) Sunday/Domingo: 7:00am, 8:45am (Español), 10:45am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm (Chinese in the small Chapel), 5:30pm (Español) Confession/Confesiones: Monday-Friday Lunes a Viernes 5:00pm-5:30pm in the Chapel Saturday/Sábado 11:30am-12:00noon & 4:30pm-5:00pm Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, Thanks again to all who made my Installation Mass and reception such a joyful celebration of our parish life in all its diversity and richness. God has given us many blessings, which is always the inspiration for our life of worship and Christian service. In that spirit of thanksgiving and mutual care, I ask you to consider how you will support Saint Matthew’s Church and its ministries in the Annual Archdiocesan Appeal 2015. This year’s assessment for Saint Matthew Church is $122,900.00. Here are just a few things that your support of the AAA has provided in direct service to our parish over the last few years: ♦ Centralized business services in support of the parish administration, ♦ Pastoral services unavailable at the parish level that directly assist individuals in need or provide ongoing training and resources for our priests, teachers and lay ministers, ♦ Education, housing and care of those preparing for the priesthood, like our own recently ordained Father Armando Gutierrez and Father Tony Vallecillo (Continued on page 2) St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 March 15, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, ♦ (cont’d) Sacramental ministries that are not provided by parish priests, like Confirmations, Ordinations, the preparation and blessing of the Sacred Oils used for the Sacraments throughout the year. While these are only a few of the things your AAA dollars have supported, they in themselves would cost Saint Matthew’s Parish far more than $122,900.00, if we had to provide them for ourselves. Please help us do our part in covering the cost of services that are essential for a Catholic parish anywhere and for a non-profit organization here in California specifically. I realize that your generous gifts are a spiritual offering to God, but I am asking for a personal favor to me as your new pastor during these first months in my ministry here. Please join me in making a commitment to the AAA 2015, so that we can focus on the positive work we can do together, without letting this become a problem to distract us. Registered parishioners should be receiving individual letters and AAA2015 brochures in the mail this week. For those who are not registered, but enjoy all the benefits of a parishioner, please be sure to pick up a brochure in the vestibule of the Church and respond right away. It has been said that “No one is so poor that he has nothing to give, and no one is so rich that he has nothing to receive.” We need each other in order to do this, and if we all do our part, however small, we will make our AAA 2015 goal. Msgr. But, as Jesus was speaking on a deeper level, so does today’s first reading. In the first paragraph we hear that Israel had, in effect, “fallen” already through its infidelity to the covenant. Lest we get too cozy, this account reminds us that God, though just, loving, and merciful, is capable of punishing sin when that sin is unrepentant. But we are also reminded that God, rich in mercy, anoints individuals to be vessels of salvation as well (in Hebrew, King Cyrus of Persia is called “messiah”). In the Gospel reading, we hear of another Messiah being “lifted up” for our salvation in one of the best known passages from the New Testament. As Lent concludes and we enter Holy Week, we need to keep our gaze steadfast upon the cross of Christ, the Son of God who came into the world to raise us who had fallen. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. This is a beautiful celebration of the blessing of all the oils used in sacramental service throughout the year. All are invited. Fourth Sunday of Lent It has been said many times over and in a variety of ways that stewardship is based on gratitude. Gratitude for what, we may ask? For the variety of blessings each of us receives, understanding that full well that each of us is gifted in different ways and perhaps even in different measures. However, there is one gift in which we all share equally. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but might have eternal life. (John 3:16) It is difficult for us to even conceive of the magnitude of that multifaceted gift of his son Jesus to the fabulous gift of everlasting life. Stewardship calls us to appreciate all of God's gifts, but if we only focus on the gifts listed above, our gratitude should know no bounds. Pope Francis has said, "God never gives someone a gift they are not capable of receiving. We all have the ability to understand and receive God's gifts." We need to recognize God's gifts and especially during our preparations for Easter, finding ways to show and live out our gratitude.
