All that we have and all that we are comes
from the Lord. “We are truly His
handiwork,” says St. Paul in the second

life of good deeds which God prepared for
us in advance.”
Living Stewardship:
We are grateful this week for all stewards
in our parish who remain steadfast in their
Lenten promises through increased prayer,

FROM THE PASTOR
PASTOR’S DESK:
We are about half way through the Season of Lent now, so I guess it is a good time to ask
how everyone is doing. I know from personal experience that frequently the spirit with which we
begin our Lenten journey often fades with time. We run out of steam or get involved with other
things and our Lenten practices seem to fall to the wayside. It certainly has happened to me from
time to time and maybe you are a victim of a drooping Lenten spirit as well. (With all the snow
we’ve been having it certainly would be no surprise!) Well, I am here to tell you that all is not lost!
It is never too late to begin again, to pick ourselves up and start all over again.
Let’s just review the three important things that should be a part of pour Lenten regime. First
of course is Prayer. Jesus tells us to that we should pray to the Father for all our needs, that God
listens to us all the time and will respond to us. Prayed must be a two way conversation with the
Lord. We might begin by tell God what is in our hearts, but we then must end with some moments
of real silent listening as God responds and speaks to our hearts. This type of prayer should be
done in a quiet place. It can be bras brief as ten minutes or as long as you like, always leaving time
for a quick “Thank You” to God at the end.
The second part of the Lenten journey is Fasting – making some sacrifice to open our hearts
to the good things that the Lord has for us. This form of sacrifice, like our Lenten prayer, is two
sided. We “give up” something to make space for something better, something that reflects the
presence of God in our hearts. It is neither to be a part of a diet nor something to make ourselves
suffer. Life brings us suffering enough without out asking for it. If our Fasting makes us grumpy or
unhappy, we are doing it wrong!
Finally, there is Almsgiving or Charity – sharing our resources with others. There are many,
many ways to do this. One might make a weekly sacrifice for the poor box or the outreach. These
ministries certainly help those in our own parish who are in need. Just look how often the Outreach
Program is in need of food for the food bank! The St. Vincent de Paul Society of the parish is also
seeking food donations this week for the Easter baskets for the poor and the #Easter dinner they
provide each year. Still more far reaching is the Catholic Ministries Appeal of the diocese which
seeks to reach out to people with all kinds of needs through the myriad on ministries supported by
the diocese – ministries that no one parish could ever hope to respond to alone. I will tell you more
about this in the coming weeks. Just remember for now that Almsgiving is meant to help both the
giver and the receiver, so it should represent a gift from your need and not from your surplus.
So there you have it – Lent in a nutshell. If you are progressing well, keep up the good work! If
you have fallen by the wayside, now would be a wonderful time to begin anew. In either case,
these three simple (?) actions will help us to arrive together at Easter full of Joy!
Fr. Joe

ADULT SPIRITUAL FORMATION
The Gift of Tears
“It will do us good, all of us,…during
Lent to ask for the gift of tears, so as
to render our prayer and our journey
of conversion ever more authentic
and free from hypocrisy. It will do us
good to ask ourselves this question: Do
I weep?…Is there weeping in our prayers?”
Padre Gonzalo.

FUTURE OF OUR NATION
RIGHT TO LIFE
Even if abortion were made easy or painless for everyone, it wouldn't change the
bottom-line problem that abortion kills children. And it destroys God's plan for that child in
this world. It wounds families and the future of our nation. Prayer paves the way. Action
possesses the land. We must have pro-life action to win the war against the culture of death.
