The 2nd Collection THIS WEEKEND will be for Catholic Relief Services. Your donation will feed hungry families, provide health care and clean water in remote villages, help farmers grow better crops, protect orphans and vulnerable children, and allow immediate response to emergencies. FAITH. ACTION. RESULTS Fourth Sunday of Lent We might think of candles and light more during the Advent season than during Lent, due to Advent wreaths, candles in widows, and the light of a star. But the real focus on light, as seen in this week's Gospel, is during Lent, when we prepare for Easter and Jesus' triumphant rising from the dead. It is in this game-changing event that the light of Christ destroys the power of darkness. If you have never been to an Easter Vigil, why not plan on attending this year? The theme of light is so prevalent, with processional candles everywhere and the new Paschal candle being lit for the first time. The candle is then plunged into the baptismal font before it is used for sacraments, breaking into the darkness of our sin. Through these waters, men and women will be washed clean and the darkness they were born into will exist no more. Their blindness of original sin will be healed and they will not only be able to see, they will be new creations in Christ. This Lent, before it is all over, spend time in prayer and use a candle to focus. Reflect on your life and determine what areas you need the light of Christ to shine. Then when Easter comes, know that the One who is the light is shining brighter than ever so that that you may be in darkness no more. We are now accepting donations to purchase Altar Flowers for the Easter Season. Please have your donation for your Easter Altar Flowers in memory of a loved one at the parish center by Sunday, March 22nd. Thank you. THE RED CROSS NEEDS DONORS WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18TH IN THE CHURCH HALL. 1:30 PM-6:30 PM Save a Life! Make a Difference! Give Blood! St. Michael’s Church Newark, New York Dear Parish Family, Well, I tried really hard to bring back some heat with me from my trip. It wasn’t 85 degrees this week, but it was in the 40’s! Your welcome! Today we have the enrollment of names, for those children who will begin preparation for First Holy Communion. Please keep these children and their parents in your prayers, as they prepare to receive Jesus for the first time in the Most Holy Eucharist. I would like to congratulate the following high school seniors, from St. Michael Church, who are this years recipients of the diocesan Hands of Christ Award: Keith Bremer, Gabrielle DeMitry, Aleksandra Dewa, Anthony Diamond, Grant Howard, Ryan Kreuser, Martha Rinella, Joseph Ruffalo, and Samuel Wersinger. Congratulations to all! I understand that the Living Stations are an important tradition here at St. Michael Church. In my previous position at St. Joseph the Worker, the younger children would present the Stations of the Cross by reading for each one. I am a bit nervous about putting together this year’s living stations, because it is something I have never done before, but the staff is very reassuring that everything will be fine and the kids will be a big help to me. I ask for your prayers as I continue my ministry here at St. Michael. It takes time placing names with faces, but I am getting there. God’s blessings and peace to you all in the upcoming week.
