Last Sunday, January 11, 2015 was a very special
day. The opening Mass of our 125th Anniversary Year
was the second time since I came here that there was
standing room only in Church. I was deeply touched by
all of the events of the day.
I want to thank everyone who played a part in
making last Sunday special for all of our parishioners and
guests; that includes all of the ministers of the Mass, the
altar servers, the choirs, the Vietnamese and Spanish congregations, anyone who made, bought or brought something for the reception, and the benefactors who contributed financially.
I also must thank the dedicated members of The
125th Anniversary Committee who prepared for the opening over the past several months and are still working on
other events for the remainder of our Anniversary Year.
Come and join them the first Monday of every month in
the Auditorium.
I am looking forward to this coming year because
I expect us to form a Sodality, a Young Adults Group, a
Youth Group, and “That Man is You” - a men’s group!
Have a peaceful week,
Father John D. Hand

MARY, MOTHER OF CAPTIVES
Mary, Mother of Captives has a
Pen Pal Program for those who are
incarcerated. We are in need of
volunteers who would be willing to
write to someone in prison. To visit
someone in prison is a Corporal
Work of Mercy.
We receive many requests from inmates in their darkest hours. Many have lost family and friends due to
years of incarceration or because the prison is very far
from their home. The Pen Pal Program is a foolproof
system that offers complete anonymity to those on the
outside who participate. For more information, please
contact Jack or Sophie at (215) 698-2585 or e-mail
them at [email protected]. Or better yet, please
join us for the next meeting at 7 PM in the Bishop
McShea Meeting Room which is located behind the
sacristy in the Upper Church on Wednesday, January
21, 2015.

The World Meeting of Families Prayer
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church.
May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world
be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth and live in your love.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

What’s in a Name? Have
you ever wondered how
our parish got its name?
Our first pastor, Reverend
Joseph P. O Neill, was
the brother of Reverend
Francis O’Neill, the pastor of our parent church
of
St. James the Greater
(today St. Agatha St.
James) from 1874 to
1882. It was Francis who
commissioned the construction of their church at 38th and
Chestnut, but before it was completed, he died tragically at
age 39. Joseph had joined him there as assistant starting in
1877. A parish history notes that “In 1890, Father Joseph
was appointed to found the parish of St. Francis de Sales
and it is said that he named the new parish in honor of his
brother” who was named after the saint.
“Saint Francis de Sales” proved to be a singularly
fortuitous name, connecting us with our origins at St.
James, and our future in the neighborhood.
The original Saint Francis de Sales was a Bishop
and Doctor of the church -- a lawyer and a very smart guy
– famous for his ability to manage religious divisions, and
for keeping the Catholic faith alive during difficult times in
Europe in the late 1500s and early 1600s. Putting faith in
action, he lived simply, worked for peace, and championed
the poor.
When SFDS parish was formed in 1890, we are
told that neighbors were reluctant to sell land for a Catholic
church because Catholics were thought to be very insular,
sticking to their own communities, opening their own
schools, and swearing allegiance to a foreign Pope.
Perceptions changed over time. Seventy years later,
in the turbulent 1960s, a history of the Lutheran Saint John
of the Incarnation church (then at 47th and Cedar), notes
that “The area surrounding the Incarnation Parish faced
integration much better than other neighbors, due to the
foresight of the Roman Catholic Parish, St. Francis de
Sales. Determined to not allow their neighborhood’s destruction through fear and ignorance, the people of de
Sales welcomed their new neighbors and set an example of
working together to find common interests and experiences.
This spilled over to people of the Incarnation Parish as
well...”
What would St. Francis ask today?
If you can help with the 125th Anniversary or have history
to share, please contact [email protected] or
come to the next meeting on February 2 at 7:00 PM in the
