SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Queridos Feligreses y Amigos,
The fifty days after Easter is a glorious time as we
reflect on the Resurrection of Jesus. At Easter Vigil a week
ago Saturday evening more than 200 men, women and
children were received into the Church in our parish. The
scripture readings from now until Pentecost focus on the
developing community joined in faith in the Risen Jesus.
This is an important time of reflection for those received into
the Church. Those of us who received the Sacraments of
Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) long ago
can also benefit from these 50 days of reflection so as to
deepen our appreciation of the sacramental gifts we have
received.
I want to share with you two reflections from the
Creighton University On-Line Ministries website that help
us understand the significance of Eastertide.
#1 “Easter is a seven week season of joy and grace. Starting
with the Triduum in Holy Week and ending with Pentecost
Sunday, this 50 day season has been called "the radiant
center of the liturgical year." We keep celebrating so that we
might continue to enter into the meaning of the resurrection
and to deepen the way it touches our daily lives.
“After Ester Week's resurrection stories, the first reading for
the rest of this long and glorious season is from the Acts of
the Apostles. Every day we see how Jesus' followers reacted
to his death, the challenges to their witness and the
unexpected courage that comes to them. John's Gospel is
used for the entire Easter Season, the one time of year we can
enter into his poetic and layered stories on a daily basis.
“Easter only begins with Easter Sunday. These daily prayers
and meditations come together to remind us that Jesus is
with us. He is not dead, but alive. And, that makes all the
difference in the world in how much hope and courage we
have, before any struggle, any possible fear of death. In these
50 days, we are Easter People!”
toca nuestras vidas diarias.
muerte. Durante estos 50 días, somos Personas de Pascua!”
#2 “On this Second Sunday of Easter – Divine Mercy
Sunday - we recall the great events of God’s everlasting
mercy which we have celebrated over the past two weeks,
through Holy Week and this past week’s accounting of the
stories of the Resurrection. We are reminded today that the
effect of the Resurrection on the first community is seen in
the love they have for one another and the freedom they have
to care for the least among them so generously. We can pray
for that grace for our time.
“The Thomas story is powerful. Jesus invites Thomas, in the
midst of his doubts, to enter his wounds to know who he is,
for Thomas and for us. We are invited today to contemplate
those wounds, to enter them, to experience the power of
God’s everlasting mercy for us, in Jesus, and to be grateful.
Believing is seeing – seeing that we have nothing to fear
when we recognize our Lord and our God.”
nuestro Dios.”

Understanding Catholicism
Throughout the last 2,000 years the Catholic Church has
combatted scores of heresies. Some of those heresies caused
the church to define various attributes of God.
We’ll discuss those attributes and what led the church to
define them at Thursday’s Understanding Catholicism
meeting.
The weekly sessions are held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Thursdays at 4700 N. Central, Suite 106. That’s in the
shopping center across Central from the church and behind
Hula’s restaurant.
The classes are free and are open to anyone who wants to
know more about their Catholic religion, or to others who
want to know about what Catholics believe.
For additional information contact Bob or Gail Early at
266-0230.
