Dvar Torah
By Perry Ciment
In 1867, noted author
Mark Twain paid a visit to the
Holy Land and recorded his
impressions in a book called
“Innocents Abroad.” His
observations about the
widespread desolation that he
found are in marked contrast
to the verdant and bustling
landscape recently created
there by Jews by the grace of
God. Twain wrote the
following: “A barren country
whose soil is rich enough that
is given over wholly to
weeds…even olive trees, once
fast friends of a worthless soil,
have almost deserted the
country. No landscape exists
that is more tiresome to the
eye than that which bounds
the approaches to Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is dreary, mournful
and lifeless. The land sits in
sackcloth and ashes.” Did
Twain wonder why the local
Arab population was unable to
till the soil successfully while
other Arab lands nearby were
feeding their own people?
Could anyone explain why was
there so little progress for
thousands of years in
developing a land that had
been occupied by powerful and

industrious conquerors: the
Crusaders, the Arabs, and The
Ottomans? A verse in this
week’s parsha may answer
these questions. In the midst of
the searing litany of terrifying
prophecies, Hashem addresses
not only the fate of the people
of Israel but the very land
itself. “I will make the land
desolate; and your enemies
who dwell on it will be
desolate.” Rashi explains that
this is actually a blessing in
disguise, implying that the land
will only be productive when
its rightful owners, the Jews,
return home. And so it is.
