From The Rabbi's Desk
The images of the synagogue in Har Nof, Jerusalem where people at
prayer, and a policeman defending them, were attacked and killed in
cold blood continues to haunt me. The site of prayer shawls soaked in
blood and holy books spattered with blood was difficult to see and even
more horrifying to contemplate. The four widows of the men killed in
the attacked issued the following statement the Shabbat after their husbands were killed: “We turn to you, our brothers and sisters of the
House of Israel, throughout the world: Let us unite, all of us, to bring
God’s mercy upon us, by taking it upon ourselves to increase our love
and compassion for one another, whatever our community or faction.”
Their request, that the Shabbat be one where we love each other unconditionally, seems to be the only response following such actions. Only
love will see the Jewish people through such horror.
It is particularly sobering and inspiring to think about the request of
these widows as we begin Kislev and anticipate the start of Chanukah.
When establishing the laws of Chanukah, HIllel and Shammai, the great
rabbinic debaters argued about the ways to light candles. Hillel advocated that we begin with one candle and add an additional candle each
night. Shammai believed that we should start with eight candles and
light one less each night. As we know Hillel’s opinion is the one that is
followed. Why do we start with one and increase to eight-- because we
need to increase light in the world. Chanukah comes at the darkest time
of year and we need that light to serve as hope and inspiration.
This Chanukah we are more than ever aware of the tremendous darkness in the world, and need for light to blot out the darkness. This chanukah we must find ways to increase our love and compassion for one
another, for the people we know and for the random people we encounter on the street, at the grocery store or at work. Unconditional love is
the only way of moving past such darkness. We must continue striving
and bringing more light into the world.
May this Chanukah be full of light from the increasing candles on your
Chanukiah (Menorah). May the light that increases from night to night
also increase the amount of love and peace in the world.
L’Shalom
Rabbi Ilana Foss
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
The history of Temple Beth Emunah is filled with periods of transformation. From our move from Cottage Street
to Torrey Street, from Rabbi Werb to Rabbi Foss, from the Lipman Hebrew School to B’Yachad – our congregation continues to evolve. Each of these steps has always been towards the same goal: to enhance and ensure the
future of Jewish life in our communities.
In November, the congregation of Temple Beth Am in Randolph voted overwhelmingly--as we had previously
done--to enter into formal merger conversations to help us form a larger, more vibrant Jewish community in
Southeastern Massachusetts.
We have known from the beginning that regardless of the congregational votes that there would be an increasing
amount of work as we move ahead. This vote means that we must now focus our energy on:
Organizing teams (http://bit.ly/tbeteams) to ensure our community moves forward with our plans both thoughtfully
and aggressively. These committees will be tasked with much more than the search for our new building and the
exploration of new ideas to bolster the foundations of our community: Worship, Education, Culture and the Social Relationships which have held us together.
We must continue to embrace the concept of Additive Change – allowing new ideas and opportunities to grow
alongside our longstanding traditions.
Above all, our congregation must put itself on the forefront of Welcoming, Relational Judaism – and understand
that a successful community is based on building positive relationships.
We are committed to ensuring that the multiple pathways we all take to reach our Jewish experiences are positive
ones – that is why we have all chosen to be members of this community. Following a new path can always seem
frightening – but the opportunity before us is great. I look forward to our facing these challenges together – and to
the growing successes that we will reach.
L’shalom,
Stu Kirsch

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to give homeless children a better tomorrow.
Do you have 2 hours each week to play with young homeless children in one of our
statewide shelter-based Playspaces in Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod?
Help a homeless child learn, play, and thrive. Upcoming volunteer training:
Saturday, 12/6/14, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm, Lakeville, MA.
One in every 30 children in the U.S. is homeless each year. The stress and trauma of homelessness is emotionally and cognitively damaging to young children.
Your support helps us to continue making a positive impact on homeless children in Southeastern
MA and Cape Cod. Right now we are in great need of volunteers to play with young children living
in homeless shelters.
B’Yachad South Area Religious School.
The Torah tells us to “teach [the commandments] diligently to your children.” This message is so important that we
repeat these exact words from the Torah in our daily V’ahavta prayer. What does it mean to “teach [the commandments] diligently to your children”? And how do we begin such a big task?
There are so many ways inside and outside the synagogue walls to teach our children. Inside the synagogue, our
children learn every week in the religious school. They also learn by attending services, participating in tikkun olam
projects, being a member of the youth group and learning together with parents in family education. And sometimes
parents learn through their children too! There is something for all of us to learn at the synagogue. Outside of the
synagogue, we regularly impart values and lessons to our kids through our actions and shared values.
As we enter 2015, may we all find new ways to add Jewish education, formally or informally, to our lives. Perhaps
attend a new worship service or adult education class, practice Hebrew with your child or discuss something new
they have learned at religious school this month. Read a Jewish book together or watch a movie with a Jewish
theme. There are limitless ways to explore your own personal Judaism and your family’s Judaism.
November was filled with ways to learn as children, adults, and families. The month started with the teachers learning together at the B’Yachad faculty meeting. It is so wonderful to have a community of teachers who learn together and teach each other. On Sunday, November 2, the Shalom group (Mrs. Swartz’s new students) participated
in a family education program and created Shabbat Boxes with their parents. They were able to go home with a
complete Shabbat set including Candle Sticks, Kiddush Cup, Challah Cover, Challah Board, Shabbat Candles, and
the Shabbat Blessings. We hope they are able to use the set for years to come!
Sunday, November 9, was packed with fun and learning. The day began with an Open Parents Meeting with the
B’Yachad Committee where parents came together to discuss the school. Following the meeting, the entire school
community (parents and kids) came together for our second annual Jewish Camp Expo. Thank you to Michele Roy
for organizing the event and to CJP for the grant that allows the school to focus time on the importance of Jewish
summer camp. It was so great to hear from so many different camp representatives. Many students then stayed for
the F.U.N. lunch complete with Pizza and “smornolis” (that is a cannoli that is a s’more). Lastly, many children,
teens and adults stayed to watch the movie “Bully.” Following the movie, the group discussed the movie using a
Jewish lens. It was a great way to begin to talk about the issue of bullying and what each of us can do to stop it.
On Sunday, November 16th the volunteers who are going to be assessing the students in Hebrew (with Mitkadem)
met for the first time. They learned about the Hebrew program and what it means for a student to be able to move to
the next level. They also began volunteering in November! Thank you to all the volunteers!
The month ended with a PJ Library program focused on Hanukkah! The children ages 2-5 learned about Hanukkah
through stories, songs and crafts. Each child made a Hanukiah and a special mat to put the Hanukiah on which
includes all the blessings! What a fun morning!
December is a shorter month in the school but still filled with learning, fun and of course Latkes! On Sunday,
December 7, the teachers will be going to Limmud Boston to learn themselves! I know they will bring what they
learn into their classrooms! Our next Jr. Congregation will be on Saturday, December 13th at Temple Beth
Emunah. And on Tuesday, December 16th, we will hold our annual Hanukkah party at Temple Beth Emunah!
Look for more details to come! School will be on break until January 4th.

2ND GRADE FAMILY EDUCATION
It is that time of year again. Our Telem teens have been going to the Evelyn House, a homeless shelter, for the
past couple of months. It is heartwarming to see our teens doing crafts and entertaining the residents each
week. Sixteen families are presently housed there. The kids range in age from one month to 18 years old. We
once again need your help in giving them a happy holiday through your generous assistance. How can you
help? Simply donate an unwrapped gift or if you prefer, donate money, any amount will help and we will buy
the gift for you. Please bring your contribution to the Temple Beth Emunah office by December 12th. Our
teens will wrap and deliver your gift on December 22nd. You will have the pleasure of doing a Mitzvah and
putting a smile on a child's face! Please help us make this the best year ever!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact:
Barbara Fine: 339-364-1250 or email: [email protected]
or
Michele Roy: 508-584-6835 or email: [email protected]
Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!
EVETTE ROY
This past Sunday, Evette Jaclyn Beverly Roy was called to the torah as a Bat Mitzvah.
Schechter. She enjoys listening to music and documentaries, especially the Beatles.
Evette is a 7th grade student at Newton
For her Mitzvah project she donated her hair to “Wigs for Kids”. Although Evette loved her long hair, she felt that it was important
to donate to such a wonderful organization. “Wigs for Kids” supplies kids suffering from hair loss, wigs FREE of Charge. Special
thanks to Melissa Sims, Wendy’s daughter, for undertaking the important task of cutting the hair, which requires specific guidelines
in order to be eligible for donation. If you are interested in donating to this great organization, log on at www.wigs forkids.org .
Stephen, Simone and myself are very proud not only of her donation, but also of the impressive job she did in leading us in prayer
and Torah at her special Rosh Chodesh service.

Social Action
Temple Beth Emunah is looking for volunteers to join their Literacy team.
Members of the Literacy Team go into local Brockton Elementary schools and
work with students in their reading and writing skills.
Our Team Leader is Tina Langson. She has been working with the JCRC and members of Temple Beth Emunah to help fill the need
in our local schools. The commitment is for just one hour a week. All volunteers are trained in how to service these special students.
If you are interested in working with children and you enjoy reading please contact Tina Langson at [email protected]
It was a dark and stormy night. Wait. Stop. Wrong novel. It was a blustery, sunny day when the cooks
from Social Action went to Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal with abundant desserts. Well, it was
almost Thanksgiving. We cooked BBQ chicken, green and yellow beans, and rice pilaf. Thanks to Reva and
our own bakers, the RMcDH guests feasted on magic bar cookies, sundae cookies, pumpkin milk chocolate
chip cookies, frosted chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, and frosted sugar cookies.
These meals cannot happen without donors. When you are writing your end of year charity checks, please
consider writing a check in any amount to the Ronald McDonald Dinner Fund. A meal for 15-25 guests
costs $35-50. We are so very grateful for your support.
Brotherhood News
The Brotherhood of Temple Beth Emunah has had a busy fall. We hosted Keeper of the Flame at our Temple, honoring Rabbi
David Werb. This event was an overwhelming success, and I continue to receive compliments on the food, the service, and the
harmony in which this event was run. We held ‘The Last Voice’ which opened our synagogue to our community. This contemporary program was fun for everyone who attended. We are looking to take this event to the next level!
I am again asking all male members of Temple Beth Emunah to join our Brotherhood. Our mission is to support our congregation. We need new members to introduce new programs and ideas that will steer The Brotherhood of Temple Beth Emunah towards the future. We want to hear your voice. If you would consider joining us, please call or e-mail me directly.
Two reminders. Our Board Meeting will be held at Town Spa Pizza in Stoughton on Tuesday, December 2nd, at 8 PM. Our
meeting will begin at 8:15 PM to allow people to attend minyan at our Temple. Second, our Paid-Up Supper is scheduled for
Thursday, December 11th beginning at 7 PM. If you can attend, please e-mail me to confirm. All are welcome to attend and this is
a great opportunity for new members to be introduced.
We are also looking to the future with Temple Beth AM in Randolph. We will be posting each other’s events for the upcoming
year.
I would also like to thank all congregation members who have supported our Brotherhood and volunteered at our events. You
make us stronger, and I appreciate everyone’s time and efforts throughout the year!
