Donor 2014 Recap

IHO our family

great-grandfather, Raymond Wilkof
Rita & Gerry Golub
Doree & Bernie Hafner
Jack Rappoport
Dear Fellow Congregants,
I would like to begin this note with a big
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to
each of you.
Our 2014 joint donor with
Temple Israel Sisterhood was a HUGE
SUCCESS due to you, your contributions to
donor, and your help and support for our
donor event, “A Night to Remember”. Your
support made our 2014 Donor the great
success that it was. We surpassed last year’s
contributions by a great margin. All the money raised went directly to Chadash to support our
Religious and Hebrew School. THANK YOU!!
Believe it or not, preparation for Donor began last August. After a series of meetings with Temple
Israel Sisterhood, and our representatives from Shaaray Torah, we selected a co-chair from each
institution to head this event. We then began to select committees for food, advertising, and all that
goes into an event as large as donor. I had the distinct honor to represent Shaaray Torah as your
co-chair for this event. I accepted this honor with great pride.
This event would not have been possible without the unselfish help of so many of you. At the event,
“A Night to Remember”, the time constraint made it impossible to name each of you individually, so
I am thanking all of you now who contributed in various ways to support this event. If I omit anyone, I
apologize, in advance for this error.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Darrell Vanest for everything he did for this event. He truly
gave 150% as he always does. Thank you, Darrell. Also, thank you Brian Zelker for your help at the
event. Patti Green, thank you for your unmeasurable help with recording the reservations and donor
contributions. Also a very special thank you to my husband Jim who endured all the daily questions
about this event and supported me 100%.
Thank you Linda Alperin for the beautiful centerpieces you designed. Also, thank you, Cindy Bouer
for heading the food committee. I could not have had a better person for this job. Cindy made
several trips to Cleveland to obtain many of the unique appetizers we had. I would like to thank and
acknowledge our “behind the scenes” person, Linda Sklar who was invaluable with her input and
help. Thank you JJ Reavan for donating your time as bartender. Also, I would like to thank Bobbi
Atman, Christy Altman, Gail Goldman, Carol Rose, Ellen Shankle, Laura Solomon, and Hyla Vander
who made special food dishes, donated food, or monetarily contributed to our event. Thank you to
our greeters, Kandy Green and Lila Levine. To my co-chair, Joan Ortman, I offer a special note of

thanks. She is an awesome person and leader. Thank you Bonnie Manello for all of your help and
advice. Also, thank you Karen Phillippi who was so thorough and helpful in advertising this event. I
personally want to thank each of you that I have listed above.
Thank you to all who attended “A Night to Remember”. We had one of the best and largest
turnouts for Donor that we have had in years. Thank you for your support. Thank you Hazzan and
Dianne Braun and our Shlichim, Tohar & Ofri Kait for attending our event.
The entertainment provided by Kevin DiSimone and his wife, Hilary James provided a musical trip
down memory lane. (Many of you sang along and tapped your fingers to the rhythm of their songs
which was fun to watch.) Kevin and Hilary were awesome!!!!
The joint donor of 2014 was truly a Huge Success. We exceeded our donor from last year, both
monetarily and in attendance. You all need to pat yourselves on the back and applaud your efforts,
support, and generosity. Each of you who supported donor played a part in this success.
It takes a great team with great team work to make events like this possible and successful. I am
proud to have lead Shaaray Torah’s team in this successful 2014 Donor.
With sincere thanks, Mary Donna Rubin

January 2015 Shlichim Programs
Monday, January 12, 2015 – 7:00 p.m.
Monday, January 26, 2015 - 7:00 p.m.
“Community Life in Israel:
The Kibbutz & the Moshav”
Movie: “Children of the Sun”
We will share our experiences growing up on a
kibbutz and a moshav. In keeping with the Israeli
tradition of sharing food in celebration, we ask you to
bring a food item to share with each other during the
program.
In the 1920s and 1930s, tens of thousands of
children were born on an Israeli kibbutz and raised
as part of a social experiment to create a new and
improved human. The film traces these “Children
of the Sun” from their birth through their growth as
members of the Zionist elite, and to the crisis that
weakened the kibbutz movement. There will be a
Skype talk from the Kibbutz.
Hanukkah Raffle Thank You!
We would like to thank all those who purchased tickets for the Hanukkah Raffle. Also, a special thank you to
everyone who donated their time, in one way or another, to make this raffle a success: Rabbi Adland, Rick
Altman, Hazzan Braun, Pat Downes, Steve Genshaft, Patti Green, Perry Lieberman, Lee Karelitz, Bonnie
Manello, Marty Ortman, David Sklar, Laura Solomon, Darrell Vanest and Brian Zelker.
The winner of the first night for $1,000 was Rob Stradley of Maconachy-Stradley Insurance Company. Rob
donated a significant amount of his winnings back to the Synagogue In Loving Memory of His Beloved Wife,
Nanci Stradley who passed away on December 15th. May her memory be for a blessing. Winners of the 4th
night, Amy Lakritz & Mark Weiner, also donated their winnings back to the Synagogue. We sincerely
appreciate your generosity.

CHADASH NEWS
by Nancy Shimer
Upcoming Events
January will be a very busy month for the
Chadash community. Here is just a sampling of
activities and events that we’ve planned for the
school.
Chadash Classes Resume
Please note that following our winter break,
Hebrew classes will resume on Wednesday,
January 7, and Sunday religious school and
Hebrew classes will resume on Sunday,
January 11.
Hebrew Name Project
In early January we are distributing a
questionnaire that will help Chadash families
research the Hebrew names of family members,
including grandparents, aunts and uncles. In
addition, parents and students who do not yet
have Hebrew names will be encouraged to
choose names for themselves, and will be
working with their respective clergy members to
“formalize” their new names. Our goal is to
have each family establish and maintain a
permanent record of the Hebrew names of all
family members.
Shlichim Work with Chadash
On Sunday, January 25, the community
shlichim will be working with all of the religious
school students on an art project in connection
with the holiday of Tu BiShvat. Tohar and Ofri
will help our students create tree-themed art
Shaaray Torah Synagogue
works that will be sent to a school in our sister
community in the western Galilee.
We’re
hoping that the Israeli students will share their
art with us as well!
Chadash Community
Tu BiShvat Seder
The entire community is invited to a Chadash
community Tu BiShvat seder at the Beit Ha’Am
building on Wednesday, February 4, at 4:30pm
(Hebrew students can arrive at the usual time of
4:15pm and help set up the seder). Please join
the students and teachers, as well as Hazzan
Braun, Rabbi Adland, and shlichim Tohar and
Ofri for a fun and meaningful seder “meal”
featuring fruits and nuts associated with Israel,
as we celebrate the birthday of the trees and
the early signs of spring. There is no fee for this
program, but reservations are required so that
we can be sure to have plenty of treats on hand
for everyone! You can RSVP to Nancy at
[email protected] or by phone at (330) 4452853. Please note that this is not a full meal, so
you will want to make plans to have dinner
afterwards.
Martin Luther King Weekend
Please note that there will be no religious
school or Hebrew classes on Sunday, January
18 and no Hebrew classes on Monday, January
19 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

The Beit Ha’am Electronic Yahrzeit Memorial Board
The New Electronic Yahrzeit Memorial Board, which
is located just inside and to the left of the Main
Entrance of the Beit Ha’am building, replaced the old
Bronze Wall Boards that were in place in the
hallways of Shaaray Torah. Each of the old yahrzeit
wall boards contained 100 – 125 individual bronze
plaques with the name and date-of-death of the
deceased. The old system used light bulbs, which
were on either side of the deceased member’s
plaque, and were turned on the week before the
yahrzeit date of the deceased. The plaques were
purchased by family members of the deceased, as a
way to mark the yahrzeit date, and also as a tax
deductible donation to the synagogue.
The Electronic Yahrzeit Memorial Board uses a
modern technologically advanced software program, which will automatically display the name and date-ofdeath of the deceased on the large monitor at the appropriate yahrzeit date. All of the information on the
plaques that were affixed to the old bronze yahrzeit wall boards at Shaaray Torah, before the building was
remodeled, were entered into the new electronic yahrzeit database, and are displayed at the appropriate
yahrzeit date each year. It will display the Yahrzeit for two weeks: 1 week before the yahrzeit to 1 week after.
A new innovation is the board’s search function, by which individuals are able to search for friends’ and
relatives’ yahrzeit dates using the interactive touch screen. Deaths of Shaaray Torah members and deaths of
relatives of Shaaray Torah members, and their subsequent yahrzeit dates, which occurred after 2010, are not
displayed on the new electronic memorial board, unless a prior paid reservation was made with the
synagogue.
The Electronic Yahrzeit Memorial Board is shared by Shaaray Torah and Temple Israel, and will display the
names of all purchased yahrzeits of both congregations. The names are displayed on the screen, in
alphabetical order, using a scrolling system. For questions and pricing information regarding having your
loved ones remembered with their name and yahrzeit date displayed, or to pre-purchase a spot on the
Electronic Yahrzeit Memorial Board, call (330.492.0310), or email ([email protected]), Patti in the
Shaaray Torah office.
