WEEKLY Saturday, January 24, 2015 • 4 Shevat 5775 SHABBAT BO Torah Page: 248 | Haftarah Page: 263 Haftarah: Dylan Katz RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE “…tomorrow I will bring locusts on your territory. They shall cover the surface of the land, so that no one will be able to see the land. They shall devour the surviving remnant that was left to you after the hail; and they shall eat away all your trees that grow in the field. Moreover, they shall fill your palaces and the houses of all your courtiers and of all the Egyptians—something that neither your fathers nor fathers’ fathers have seen from the day they appeared on earth to this day.’” With that he turned and left Pharaoh’s presence. And Pharaoh’s courtiers said to him, “How long shall this one be a snare to us? Let the men go to worship the LORD their God! Are you not yet aware that Egypt is lost?” So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh…” This is the first time we discover a difference between the attitude and outlook of the Pharaoh to his courtiers and servants. One should ask why this is the case now? One commentator, Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Lunschitz (17th century Poland) suggested a novel explanation – that the plague of the locusts, coupled with the past plague of hail, was bound to leave Egypt empty of any food. This would not impact the Pharaoh, but it would impact on them. So now they are moved to say and argue with the Pharaoh because it was about to hit home, not because they suddenly developed a moral conscience as to what they were doing with the Israelites. And so it is for many of us where the misfortunes of the world only move us when it touches us. Our faith, on the other hand, wants us to care for those who suffer particularly – especially – when our lot is filled with plenty and fortune.
