St. Rose of Lima Parish Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima In Christ, We are Bread for one another: Broken… we gather. Nourished… we reach out. ………………….....……………………………. En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno: Lo Dividimos… Nos Juntamos. Alimentados… tendemos la mano. Do We Believe? April 12, 2015 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY We have come to know St. Thomas as “doub ng Thomas,” although the other Apostles did not believe in the Resurrec on instantly and were very much like him. St. Thomas’ doubts may be our own as well. The dialogue between Jesus and St. Thomas helps us to see what Easter faith is like. St. Thomas’ first doubt was hesita on about the truth of the Resurrec on because he could not see the Risen Lord. He represents the transi on we must make from looking for a visual experience of Christ to experiencing the invisible, spiritual presence of Christ in others and in the Sacraments. Although we cannot see the Lord, He is much present with us in the Sacraments, in the life of the Church and in the community. The Easter candle symbolizes His real presence for us; that’s the reason the priest incenses it with great respect and devo on throughout the Easter Season. Christ is not the candle, but it reminds us that He is among us. Even though we cannot see Him with our eyes, we can reach Him through faith and, especially, prayer. Our Easter faith and saving contact with the Risen Lord is not visual but spiritual. St. Thomas’ second doubt had to do with Jesus’ nail marks and wounds. He doubted that these wounds could lead to Risen glory. He knew that those wounds were real. If the person appearing had them, then he would believe that Christ is truly risen. The Easter candle has five wounds represented on it. Jesus conquered death and rose to glory. Through Easter faith, we not only survive suffering and setbacks, we also come through them to new life and victory. Easter faith means that we don’t have to stay behind closed doors, fearful of what might happen in our life. St. Thomas’ third doubt was that the Risen Christ really forgave the Apostles for abandoning Him. They had le their Master and Thomas found it hard to believe that the Lord returned with forgiveness for them. Maybe we have doubts that Jesus really forgives us. This is also part of our Easter faith. Our life as individuals and as a parish are not always as ideal as that portrayed in the Acts of the Apostles: “They were one and had all in common.” The gi of Christ’s forgiveness gives us the power to seek healing and to receive a new start from Him. Jesus’ forgiveness that we receive in the Sacrament of Confession is the healing power of Easter at work in our souls. We know that everything that happens to us, even our wounds, can lead to new life. We know that we can always receive Christ’s forgiveness and begin again. It is through ra onal faith, not through visions, that we can know the same salva on, forgiveness, grace and union with Christ that the very Apostles knew. It is surrender to Christ that saves. 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1024 PHONE: 301-948-7545 FAX: 301-869-2170 EMERGENCIES (A er Hours): 301-355-8191 CANCELLATION INFORMATION: x307 WEBSITE: www.strose-parish.org EUCHARIST / EUCARISTÍA Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Monday-Friday................................... 8:30 am (English) 1er Viernes ........................................ 7:00 pm (Español) Sunday............................................... 7:15 am (English) 1er Dimanche................................... 10:00 am (Français) 2nd Sunday ........................................ 5:00 pm (Tagalog) Church / Iglesia Saturday Vigil ..................................... 5:00 pm (English) Sunday...... 8:45 am (English) & 11:15 am (English + ASL) Domingo ........................................... 1:00 pm (Español) RECONCILIATION / RECONCILIACIÓN Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Thursday........................ 7:00-9:00 pm (English/Español) Church / Iglesia Saturday ..................................... 4:00-4:30 pm (English) Domingo .................................... 2:15-3:15 pm (Español) BAPTISM PREPARATION / PREPARACIÓN PARA BAUTIZO Bap sm Classes Begin while pregnant or awai ng adop on. In this way, it also sums up the whole Easter Octave. As Pope John Paul II pointed out in his Regina Caeli address on Divine Mercy Sunday, 1995: “the whole octave of Easter is like a single day,” and the Octave Sunday is meant to be the day of “thanksgiving for the goodness God has shown to man in the whole Easter mystery.” Please come and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 10:30am this Sunday, April 12. “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” ~ Chaplet of Divine Mercy Liturgical Ministers For Special Celebra ons Liturgical Ministers of all kinds are need to help with Confirma on (Fri., Apr. 24, 7:00pm) and First Holy Communion (Sat., May 9, 10:00am). This period is known as the Great Fi y Days, during which we celebrate the Lord’s resurrec on, His appearance to the disciples a er Easter, His post-resurrec on teachings, His ascension into heaven, and the disciples’ eager an cipa on of the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The Great Fi y Days of Easter are also the me when our neophytes (those bap zed at the Easter Vigil) and those who have reaffirmed their bap smal vows reflect on the meaning of their bap sm. Through the lec onary texts they explore the “mysteries” of their faith. The early church called this period “mystagogia.” We, along with the neophytes and newly received, unpack the mysteries of our faith. We enter the Great Fi y Days, uncovering anew the mysteries of faith expressed in sacrament, word, and life lived for others.
