Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon
Christ is risen, alleluia! He is truly risen, alleluia! I want to wish everyone a
very blessed and happy Easter octave and season. The second Sunday of Easter
marks the end of the octave (eight days) of Easter. Every day of the octave has
been one great solemnity, one great Alleluia to the Lord. In the midst of the
octave—these days of Resurrection—we have encountered death. Fr. Jim Pemberton died on Holy Saturday and
his funeral mass was celebrated on Easter Wednesday (April 8, 2015). I want to thank all of you who attended his
Vigil and /or Mass for his funeral. May he share in the joy of Christ’s victory over sin and death and may he rest
in peace. Also long-time organist Mr. Joe Sullivan died on Easter Tuesday (April 7, 2015). May he rest in peace
and enjoy the love of God in Christ Jesus.
The second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. I want to invite all to pray the
Chaplet of Divine Mercy with me on Sunday evening (April 12) at 6 pm in the church.
There is going to be some construction that you all might see over the next two months. There is an addition being done to the rectory to facilitate space needs for Fr. Hector. The parish has the money (and actually
we need to use it before next year or it begins to get taxed by the diocese). It is a two room addition that will allow Fr. Hector a good office, living room, bedroom and more-accommodating bathroom that is handicapaccessible. The reality of St. Bartholomew’s is that this is now a two-fulltime priest parish, and Fr. Hector will
be with us, God willing, for years to come. I want to make sure that he has the space that he needs for comfort
and livability. Also, this will allow the rectory to have two guest rooms as needed. There will be a seminarian
with us during the summer and one who will do his pastoral internship year with us beginning in September. It
will last until the following May. Thus, we’ll have a full house: cats, priests and seminarians…and in that order.
That’s a good thing.
Lastly, a magnanimous “thank you” to all who helped to make Holy Week, the Triduum and Easter so
meaningful and powerful. It was truly blessed.
