In his first Apostolic Exhortation EVANGELII GAUDIUM: the Joy of the Gospel,
Pope Francis reminds us, “In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the
People of God have become missionary disciples.” (EG 120) And as missionary
disciples we “are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the
Lord;” (EG 121) especially to the poor, the marginalized, the forgotten.
Living the Joy of the Gospel mini-conference offers you an opportunity to reflect
on this call to missionary discipleship and provides opportunities to explore ways
to live this discipleship.

A. Making Our Action Rooted in Prayer
Mona Chip, St. Albert the Great Newman Parish, Campus Minister
Living the joy of the Gospel requires action but that action should be rooted
in and flow from prayer. Come experience new ways to pray that help us
encounter God in prayer, find God in ourselves and others, and listen for the
ways God is calling us to live out the Gospel in the world.
B. Solidarity: A Call to live as One Human Family
Marcos Martinez, Catholic Relief Services
How we called to live in Solidarity with our sisters and brothers around the
world? What is our role as disciples to be in connection with the
world? Being Catholic calls us to live a vision that we are all one human
family, regardless of gender, ethnicity, nation, culture, creed, or
socioeconomic status. This session invites participants to explore the vision
upheld by the Catholic Social Teaching principle of solidarity and what it
means to live out your faith in action. “To be the change you wish to see in
the world” Gandhi Come and see. “Solidarity will transform the world”
C. Keeping My Spiritual Center
Fr. Tom Smith, Holy Cross Retreat Center, Director
Catholic social justice is more than just "doing good" or "helping
others." The motivation comes from the Gospel where Jesus calls for
conversion within our own hearts and within society. Maintaining a spiritual
basis for social action keeps us centered in the Lord, and sustains us when
times are discouraging, but especially guides our vision.
D. Restorative Justice
Deacon Lou Roman; St. Genevieve Parish
A
discussion of what we Catholics can do to extend prison ministry beyond
the confines of the walls .
E. Disciples for Social Mission: Building and Strengthening An Effective
Parish Social Ministry Team
Anne Avellone, Archdiocese of Santa Fe Director, Office of Social
Justice and Respect Life,
How do we move from individuals with passion for justice to
effective social ministry in our parish? How do we get the whole
parish involved in social mission beyond just a few "social justice"
people? Explore models of parish social ministry, discover tools to
evaluate your ministry, share ideas with others to strengthen existing
structures for social concerns ministry in your parish!
