The Federal Public Defender for the District of New Mexico is accepting applications for the position of
receptionist for the Las Cruces office. One position is available with a salary rage of JSP 5-7, currently
yielding $31,628 - $50,932. The Federal Public Defender operates under the authority of the Criminal
Justice Act (CJA), 18 U.S.C.§3006A, to provide defense services for indigent persons in federal criminal
cases and related matters in the federal courts.
DUTIES: The receptionist provides a variety of front-desk and clerical support services to the staff of the
federal defender organization including, but not limited to, receiving, screening and directing telephone
calls; communicating with and taking messages from Spanish-speaking clients and family members;
greeting visitors; keeping track of staff arrivals, departures, and destination; furnishing information to
clients, members of the general public, court personnel and the bar; assisting with word processing tasks
and recording of statistical data; running office equipment; receiving and routing incoming mail, faxes
and deliveries, and processes outgoing mail.
REQUIREMENTS: Minimum 2 years receptionist experience; high school graduate or equivalent;
experience with a busy multi-line phone system; computer proficiency with emphasis in Word Perfect
and other Windows based programs; Spanish bilingual REQUIRED. Candidates must possess the
ability to exercise good judgment in a mature and diplomatic manner; the ability to communicate well
orally and in writing; a general knowledge of office practices and clerical processes; and the ability to
recognize and analyze problems and recommend practical solutions. Prefer candidates with experience in
a legal environment.
This is a full-time position with federal salary and benefits. The position is subject to mandatory
Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit) participation for payment of net pay. Salary commensurate
with qualifications and experience. All resume information and certifications will be verified during the
