COLLECTION FOR BLACK & INDIAN HOME MISSIONS
NEXT WEEKEND
CANDLEMAS DAY - MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Along with candles we use in church, candles for home use
will be blessed on Monday. They will be available for the suggested donation of $3 for a box of two candles.
BLESSING OF THROATS (Feast of St. Blaise - February 3rd)
Blessing of Throats will take place this weekend
after all Masses, and also on Tues, Feb. 3. According
to legend, through St. Blaise’s prayers God miraculously cured a little boy who was choking on a fish
bone. Cures for afflictions of the throat have taken
place through the intercession of St. Blaise.
We begin a new month and realize that
Lent is only 2 1/2 weeks ahead. We will
have again this year a Wine Tasting Evening, to bring parishioners together -- to get
to know one another more and just spend
some sharing time on Valentine’s Day. Consider joining in
the fun (grape juice will also be served). Last year’s first
event was so widely appreciated. Look at the bottom of page
2 of today’s bulletin for further information.
We will again be blessed by the Family Life Committee,
which sponsors the Wine Tasting, with a time to meet for
coffee, punch and sweet treats after this Sunday’s 10:30
Mass. Highlighting the faith of our youth at this Mass, it will
be a blessing to share “refreshment time” with them after.
Next Sunday’s 10:30 Mass will highlight those dedicated
young people in our parish who devote so much energy and
talent as Scouts. Scout Sunday has gotten to be a wonderful
tradition of our parish. We thank Scout Troop #164 for making such a impact on our county. Their parents and leaders
deserve a great round of applause for all their efforts.
You see listed in the coming events most months the Vicariate Council meeting. This consists of representatives of the 7
parishes of Eastern Niagara and Orleans Counties. This past
Monday we discussed: (1) marriage preparation programs;
(2) Catholics Come Home program; (3) international priests
(coming from other nations) in our diocese; (4) plans for a
diocesan capital campaign; and parish Lenten programs. We
are thankful for parishioners who have given generously of
their time and efforts over the years to build up the bonds of
inter-parish cooperation and communication.

COFFEE HOUR AFTER 10:30 AM MASS
Parish families are invited
to a coffee hour, this Sunday, January 31st
Sponsored by Family Life Committee
In Sympathy….
In your prayers, please remember Conrad Platek, Ed Marshall,
Jack Parada and Joan Fischer (sister of Msgr. Joseph Dowdell),
who now enjoy new life with our Risen Lord.
THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD
According to the Law of Moses, a new mother was ritually
“unclean” for forty days after giving birth. She then entered the
temple with her child, bringing an offering of either a lamb and
a dove or pigeon, or two doves or pigeons, to be cleansed by
prayers.
When Jesus was presented on the 40th day after his birth, Simeon took the Child Jesus into his arms and blessed God, saying:
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according
to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you
prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light of revelation to the
Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” Simeon was then
ready to go home to God because God blessed him with the
sight of the Messiah.
The custom of blessing candles on this day began in the Middle Ages, coming from the reference of Jesus as “a light of revelation.”

REFLECTIONS FOR THIS WEEKEND
To cast out the “unclean spirits” of anger, fear and hurt, which
can “possess” us, means refocusing our attention from what is
missing in our lives to what we have--finding purpose in doing for others and meaning in being the means for God’s healing and hope.
