We have certainly had a mild winter compared to last year. Thank God! Our sympathy and prayers are extended to Tracy Johnson, full-day three year old preschool aide, on the sudden death of her mother, Fay Cox. May she rest in peace and may the family find comfort. The Science Fair was exemplar this year. Thanks to our science teachers, Kim Malinowski and Nicole Holzner for all of their hard work and efforts. Thanks to students, along with parent support, for projects that reflected quality and expertise. We were so proud of all of you What a treat we had from our first through eighth graders who starred in, “My Son Pinocchio.” They were great and, I’m sure some are headed for stage and screen. Thanks to the Youth Company for their professionalism and enthusiasm in working with our students. They always brag about our students. We are now working on our spring production, “You are a Good Man Charlie Brown.” Stay tuned! Trivia Night was another huge success. It is always fun to see our present and past students and families who come out to enjoy an evening of fun and challenge. Oh! How much we forget what we have learned through the years. Thanks to Robin Juran, our Music Director, for organizing the Music Fair. As always, our students made a fine showing with their projects. Our Discovery Sunday Open House was well attended and very successful. Thanks to Jennifer Beck, our creative organizer, Erin Naraky, and Krista Dustin for their help in putting it all together. It was phenomenal. Thanks to Liz Ryan for the advertisements and all the parents, past and present students, the faculty, and staff for your participation and help. We are so happy and proud of the final results. We will soon be preparing for the beginning of Lent. How true is the statement, “Time waits for no man or woman.” Enjoy all the festivities in February. Spring is lurking around the corner. Sincerely, Sister Marie Michelle, OP. Principal February 1, 2015 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 Please Support the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal Pro-Life Food Drive Next weekend, February 7th and 8th, is our monthly ProLife Food Drive. Please bring nonperishable food, cleaning supplies and paper products to the vestibule before or after Mass. We will be sending all the donations to St. Thomas of Canterbury food pantry that serves the homeless and low income residents of the Uptown neighborhood. Also, we will gratefully accept any monetary donations for the women’s Center to help them with the aid they give to women who have chosen LIFE for their babies. World Day for Consecrated Life February 2 According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t want to hear God’s voice directly any more. The experience was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, has its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. This is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22). The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing Him. Our new Archbishop Cupich has invited Religious Sisters in the Archdiocese of Chicago to a day of celebration on February 7th, in which he will celebrate Consecrated Life with us. What an honor! Please continue to pray for our Sisters and all persons who live the Consecrated Life style that we will "read the signs of the time" and act on the being conscious of and serving all of God's people and their needs, in a special way those who are poor and neglected. Also, pray for young women and men as they discern their vocation. Our world will always be in need of good priests, sisters, and brothers. —Sr. Mary Beth “Entrusted with Responsibility” Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign wher e you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. With these gifts, you are entrusted with responsibility. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $28,048.74 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Weekday Altar Servers Mon., Tues. & Wed., February 2, 3 & 4: R. Bender & R. God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future.
