Professing the Name of the Lord
In today’s Gospel we contemplate Jesus as
He goes with His disciples to the synagogue in
Capernaum. There He meets a man who is
possessed by an unclean spirit. At the words of
Jesus, the unclean spirit cries out saying: “I know
who you are, the Holy One of God.” The devil
himself recognizes Jesus as the Son of God, the
Anointed. However, Jesus commands him to be
silent and leave the man. Why does Jesus silence
him? Would it not be a good opportunity to
announce to everyone that He is the Messiah?
People would have faith in Him even His enemies.
Jesus does not identify Himself in today’s
Gospel for a simple reason: the words are coming
from someone who does not love Him. The true
profession of faith is about professing with our
mouths what is inside our hearts. It’s not just a
matter of knowing, it’s a matter of love.
Every Sunday we are invited to renew our
Catholic faith by praying the Apostles’ Creed. This
faith is such a treasure that the Church has kept
and preserved it from the first days of her
existence. We have inherited it from the Apostles
and since then it has been an instrument of
conversion for people who have even given up
their lives for such a faith.
Today we are invited to profess the name of the
Lord with confidence. He wants us to trust and
allow Him to change our lives. For this to happen,
our faith needs to be more than a statement. It has
to be a profession made with love! Let’s love Him
above all and profess His name with our mouths
and hearts.

Wednesday Evening Lenten Series
Each year, we are invited to return to the path of
Lent, which leads to a profound experience of
Christ’s Paschal Mystery. To help us discover
the direction of this Lenten journey, we will
renew our appreciation of the great gift that has
been given to us through our own initiation into
Christ’s death and resurrection. The Gospel
readings of the Transfiguration, the Women at
the Well, the Man Born Blind, and the Raising of
Lazarus will be our guides. Lent has a direction.
Where will it lead you this year? Gregory Beath,
from the Office of Formation for Discipleship, will
facilitate this Lenten reflection. It consists of four,
Wednesday evening gatherings (Feb. 25th,
March 4th, 11th and 18th) from 7:30 to 9:15 p.m.
To register, please contact Josie at the parish
office (416-439-1545).
