Red is the liturgical color for the day. The symbolism is captured in Zechariah 9:9 "The Coming of Zion's King – See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey". It was perceived that Jesus was declaring he was the King of Israel to the anger of the Sanhedrin. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, and the celebrating people there laid down their cloaks in front of him, waved branches of palms, and also laid down small branches of trees. The people sang part of Psalm 118: 25–26 – ... Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord… The symbolism of the donkey may refer to the Eastern tradition that it is an animal of peace, versus the horse, which is the animal of war. A king came riding upon a horse when he was bent on war and rode upon a donkey when he wanted to point out he was coming in peace. Jesus' entry to Jerusalem would thus symbolize his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a war-waging king. 2 † San Felipe Catholic Church LA CRUZ REDENTORA THE REDEMPTIVE CROSS Un alto en el camino, El siervo humilde y obediente nos habla: “El Señor me abrió el oído”, dice Isaías. Todos los días, pero en especial en Semana Santa, debemos tener los oídos abiertos, para escuchar la voz de Dios que nos habla en medio de los acontecimientos de nuestro mundo convulsionado. La Semana Santa es un alto en el camino para recordar y vivir el acontecimiento central de nuestra fe: la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús. De cada escena de la vida de Jesús, tenemos mucho que aprender para que nuestra vida cambie. Quiero que meditemos la escena del Cirineo. Stop along the way, the humble and obedient servant speaks to us, "The Lord opened my ear," says Isaiah. Every day, but especially during Holy week, we must have our ears open to listen to the voice of God who speaks to us in the midst of the events of our troubled world. Easter is a stop along the way to remember and to live the central event of our faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus. In each stage of the life of Jesus, we have much to learn so that our lives can change. I would like to meditate the scene of the Cyrene. Aceptar nuestra propia cruz nos ayuda a llegar hasta Dios. Simón Cirineo, un extranjero que fue obligado a cargar con la cruz de Jesús. Los soldados romanos le dicen:“Hey…tu… campesino, toma esa cruz”. Que mal día para el Cirineo! De curioso pasa a ser un actor. Sin duda el diaria: “Yo no quiero cargarla… no conozco a ese hombre..” El Cirineo es el primero de millones y millones de personas que tomaron la cruz de ahí en adelante. Él no sabía que estaba haciendo historia. La gente no se da cuenta cuando está marcando la historia. El Cirineo, cuando vio a Jesús, quizá sintió repugnancia. Pero mientras le ayudaba comenzó a sentirse inundado por algo extraño, y en sus sandalias y en su vestido le salpica sangre de Jesús. Hermanos y hermanas, hay un propósito con esa cruz y con esa sangre. En China un hombre se encontró un bebe en un basurero, estaba con quemaduras, casi muerto. Él bebe tenia puesto un pamper y dentro del pamper un dólar, eso cuesta un funeral de un bebe. Este hombre se lo llevo a su casa y la esposa se molesta: “Está enfermo, defectuoso”. El esposo le propuso solo tenerlo por unos días. Pasaron los días, los meses y él bebe se quedó en casa. Juntos fundan un orfanato para niños abandonados y enfermos. Este hombre un día encontró su cruz y su vida cambio. Quizá la cruz se te está cruzando en el camino, pienso el día que viste al joven haciendo droga y pensaste que podría ser tu hijo; el día que entraste a un hospital y viste a un enfermo abandonado por su familia; adolescentes que va por la vida sin futuro. Hay gente que se pierde a diario y nosotros no hacemos nada! Según datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, cada 24 horas se están muriendo 150 mil personas, cuantos se están yendo sin Cristo por no cargar con la cruz . Levanta tu cruz! Jesús dijo: “El que no toma su cruz y me sigue no es digno de mi”. Pidamos al Señor que nos cambie el corazón. Una persona que no le guste el cambio, se queda atrás, los cambios profundos son los del corazón. Feliz Semana Santa, hermanos! La vivamos con intensidad. Acompañemos al Señor que, durante estos días, nos dejará impresionantes lecciones de amor (en palabras y obras) y, sobre todo, preparémonos con alegría desbordante al fruto de la Pascua: su resurrección. Accepting our own cross helps us get to God. Simon Cyrene was a foreigner who was forced to carry the cross of Jesus. The Roman soldiers said to him, "Hey…you farmer, take up the cross", bad day for the Cyrene. For being curious he becomes an actor. Certainly he must’ve said, "I don't want to carry it, I don't know that man." The Cyrene is the first of millions and millions of people who took the cross from there onwards. He had no idea that he was making history. People don't realize when history is in the making. The Cyrene was disgusted when he saw Jesus, but as he was helping him, he began to feel rather strange, and in his sandals and on his dress he had splashes of the blood of Jesus. Brothers and sisters, there is a purpose on that bloody cross. In China a man found a baby in a trash bin, burned and almost dead. The baby had a diaper and within the diaper was a dollar --the costs for a funeral of a baby. The man took the baby to his house and the wife annoyed said, "It’s sick and defective." The husband proposed to her to only have him for a few days. Days and months passed by and the baby stayed at home. Together they founded an orphanage for abandoned and sick children. This man one day found his cross and his life changed. Perhaps your cross is along the way. Maybe one day you saw a young man doing drugs and thought it could be your son, the day that you came into a hospital and saw a sick man abandoned by his family, adolescents who go through life without a future. There are people who are lost on a daily basis and we do not do anything! According to the World Health Organization, every 24 hours there is 150 thousand people dying, many are leaving without Christ because they refused to carry their cross. Raise your cross Jesus said, "Who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” Let us ask the Lord to change our hearts. A person who does not like change, stays behind, profound changes are those of the heart. Happy Easter my brothers! We should live with intensity.
