Here is John, the beloved apostle, admitting that he hadn’t yet grasped the truth that Jesus would rise from the dead. And not only John but Peter and the other apostles doubted that possibility. Even Mary Magdalene, who saw the empty tomb, supposed that someone had stolen Jesus’ body (John 20:2). Now, Jesus had told his apostles that this would happen (Matthew 16:21). They saw Him raise other people from death (Luke 7:11-17; John 11:38-44). They believed in Jesus. They trusted Him. They even confessed Him as the Son of God. But as you might imagine, the idea of a resurrection is not the easiest thing to believe! All that changed, however, when they found themselves face-to-face with the Risen Lord. Actually seeing Jesus alive convinced them. It filled them with faith and gave them the boldness they needed to build the church. So here we are celebrating Easter two thousand years later. Unlike the apostles, most of us have not seen Jesus. We have to trust in Him based on the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, the proclamation of the Church, and the teachings that we find in Scripture. But we do have one thing that the apostles didn’t have: the witness of their lives! We have the stories of how fully they devoted themselves to Jesus. We have the accounts of their sacrifices for the Church, the persecutions they endured, and even the martyrdom that many of them suffered. Would they really go through all of this just to keep a “myth” alive? Not likely! Today, as we celebrate Easter, let’s listen to the witness of the apostles. They met Jesus, and they found new boldness and courage to believe. Surely, if it happened for them, it can happen for us! Points for Reflection/Discussion 1. Easter is the feast of feasts, the greatest joy and gladness of all Christians. It has been said that Christians should be “alleluia people”! Could you be called an alleluia person? Why or why not? 2. In the first reading, we hear Peter witnessing to Christ’s passion and resurrection. Why do you believe it is difficult for many Catholics to witness to others about Jesus? In what ways do you find it difficult? 3. In the Responsorial Psalm, our response is “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” What is it about your faith in Christ that causes you to “rejoice and be glad”? 4. In the second reading from Colossians, we hear this startling proclamation, “you were raised with Christ” (Colossians 3:1). What do you think these words mean? What about the following words, “For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ. When in Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with Him in glory” (3:3-4)? How can you allow the truth of these words to impact how you live out your day, especially when faced with temptations or difficult circumstances? 5. In the Gospel we read that the disciples saw the empty tomb and believed. What have you “seen” during the Lenten season and Holy Week that has deepened your faith in Jesus? What additional steps can you take to ensure that the renewal in your life that has occurred during Lent and Holy Week can become permanent and not fade away after a few weeks? 6. The meditation ends with these words: “as we celebrate Easter, let’s listen to the witness of the apostles. They met Jesus, and they found new boldness and courage to believe. Surely, if it happened for them, it can happen for us!” As you prepare to celebrate Easter and the grace-filled Easter season, what steps can you take to allow the resurrection of Jesus to give you “new boldness and courage to believe,” and to share this good news with others. 7. Take some time now to pray and thank the Lord for his resurrection and ask him for the grace to grow in faith and trust in him. (www.wau.org) Happy Easter!! Fr. Elmer Pray for our Priests Sun. F O R M A T I O N C O R N E R Congratulations to our newly Baptized & Fully Initiated Catholics who were brought into the Church at the Easter Vigil! We celebrated 13 baptisms! 8 Adults Brandon Baird, Elisama Cuevas, James & Jerusha Finster, Megan Nowicki, Maribel Oros, Alheli Villegas & Lupita Villegas; 3 young people who have reached the age of reason - Caiden Avila, Josh Ginella & Alicia Gonzalez; and 2 children - Vivian & Reagan Finster. We also welcome the 12 others who were fully initiated through First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. Their RCIA journey now continues with the period of Mystagogy which translated from Greek means “to lead through the mysteries”. Traditionally the period of Mystagogy lasts through the Easter Season to Pentecost. It is a time to reflect on what it means to participate in the Sacramental mysteries of the Church. The newly baptized are called “neophytes” which translated means “new plant” because the faith has been newly planted in them. They still have much to learn about what it means to live as Catholic Christians and need our continued support so that the faith newly planted in them can grow deep roots!! 1ST WEDNESDAY MASS TIME! John Struzzo. This s a combined celebration for the N. County inland region of St. Mary, Resurrection, St. Stephen & St. Timothy. A Holy Hour of Adoration, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Reflection, Benediction, veneration of Divine Mercy Image and relic of Saint Faustina will begin at 3:00 pm Magnificat The Western Schism divided Christianity first between two, then three, popes. Clement Vll lived at Avignon in France, Urban Vl in Rome. Vincent was convinced the election of Urban was invalid though Catherine of Siena (April 29) was just as devoted a supporter of the Roman Pope. In the service of Cardinal de Luna, Vincent worked to persuade Spaniards to follow Clement. When Clement died, Cardinal de Luna was elected at Avignon and became Benedict Xlll. Vincent worked for him as apostolic penitentiary and Master of the Sacred Palace. But the new pope did not resign as all candidates in the conclave had sworn to do. He remained stubborn despite being deserted by the French king and nearly all of the cardinals. Vincent became disillusioned and very ill, but finally took up the work of simply going through the world preaching Christ, though he felt that any renewal in the Church depended on healing the schism. An eloquent and fiery preacher, he spent the last 20 years of his life spreading the Good News in Spain, France, Switzerland, the Low Countries and Lombardy, stressing the need of repentance and the fear of coming judgment. (He became known as the “Angel of the Judgement”) He tried, unsuccessfully, in 1408 and 1415, to persuade his former friend to resign. He finally concluded that Benedict was not the true pope. Though very ill, he mounted the pulpit before an assembly over which Benedict himself was presiding and thundered his denunciation of the man who had ordained him a priest. Benedict fled for his life, abandoned by those who had formerly supported him. Strangely, Vincent had no part in the Council of Constance, which ended the schism. Probablemente no!
