ＴＯＭＯＤＡＣＨＩ ２０１５春号 県立尾鷲高校外国語指導助手（ＡＬＴ）のビリー・バレンタインさんは尾鷲市に着任し て２年近くになる。尾鷲の印象や英語教育などについてインタビューした。先輩であり、 同僚でもある北村恵子先生と平井麻由和先生にも同席していただいた。 Ms. Billie Valentine came to Owase city one year and a half year ago. She has been teaching English at Owase prefectural senior high school. Billie graduated University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and she majored in English. Q:How has your experience in Owase city been? 尾鷲でどんな経験をしましたか。 Very good. Everyone is very friendly and kind. Owase is small but it’s easy to live here. I came from a very small town where the population is about 1 12000 in the Wisconsin state. Wisconsin is famous for it’s cheese, and there are a lot of farms that makes it. とてもいいです。みんな、親切で優しい。尾鷲は小さな町だけど住みやすいです。私のウ イスコンシン州の故郷も人口１万２千人の小さな町です。主要な産物はチーズで多くの農 場があります。 Q:Do you have difficulty in teaching Japanese students? 生徒を指導する上で難しいことはありますか。 Sometimes, but most of the students are good. I teach oral Englsh. Some students are keen, but some students are not. I think all subjects have that. I speak English all the time in the class. Japanese teachers are great at “team teaching”. They try very hard to talk with me, so it’s easy to communicate. I am very lucky to be in this situation. 時々ありますが、会話中心の英語指導でほかの科目同様、生徒の一部は熱心で一部はそ うでもありません。日本人の同僚はとても熱心にサポートしてくれ、積極的に私とコミュ ニケーションを図ろうとしてくれます。 Q:How do you spend your time when you’re not teaching at school? 勤務以外の生活はどうしていますか。 I love to go hiking and I like to go outside. It is very beautiful here, and I’m not bored yet. I have been to Gifu, Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, Shikoku, and Korea. Kyoto was very nice. There are many nice temples like Kiyomizudera, Fushimiinari, Ginkakuji, Kinkakuji and beautiful places that I imagined would exist in Japan. ハイキングや屋外での活動が好きです。ここの自然は美しく退屈はしていません。これ まで岐阜県や京都、大阪、東京、名古屋、四国、韓国にも行ってきました。特に気にいっ た京都には、清水寺や伏見稲荷、銀閣寺、金閣寺など日本を象徴する美しい観光スポット があります。 Q:What do you like in Japanese traditional culture? 日本の伝統文化は好きですか。 Yaya matsuri in Owase is very interesting and strange. I enjoyed the fire festival held at Kushimoto in Wakayama prefecture. Japanese people are very polite, especially in Owase. When I was walking down the road, I got oranges from the people that I’ve never met. People stopped and talked to me, asking me things like“Where are you from?”. 尾鷲のヤーヤ祭りは変わっていて興味深い。串本町の火祭りもおもしろかった。尾鷲の 人は特に優しく、道を歩いていたら見知らぬ人がミカンをくれて、どこから来たのと話し かけてくれたりします。 2 Q:We had a big earthquake four years ago in the Tohoku area. There are many natural disaster in Japan. It must be difficult point to live in Japan for foreigners. ４年前には東日本大震災があり、日本は自然災害に多い国であり、外国人にとって住み にくいのでは。 When I came here it was a little scary. They think Mie prefecture will have a big earthquake in the future, but I’m not so nervous. I have a good understanding of natural disasters in Japan, and I have an emergency bag. We have to have it as an ALT, so I know what to do if there is an earthquake 来日当初は不安でした。三重県でも将来、大きな地震が発生すると言われていますが、 それほど心配はしていません。ＡＬＴは緊急用非常袋を持つことが必要で、どう対応すべ きかを知っています。 Q:What do you want to be in the future? 将来はどんな仕事をしたいですか。 I haven’t decided yet. I think that children are becoming more influenced by Japanese culture in the United States. Japanese anime and music becoming more popular every year and more people are learning about Japan. Especially with my generation cultural exchange is a good thing. I’m not sure about political exchange though. まだ決めていません。日本文化は米国の子どもたちに大きな影響を与えています。アニ メや音楽などは年々人気が上がり、日本語学習者も増えています。私の世代は特に文化交 流が盛んだと思います。政治的交流については分かりません。 Q:The English ability of Japanese students is low compared to some other countries. What do you think are some good ways to study English? Especially for Japanese people. 日本人の英語力は他の外国と比較しても低いとされています。英語上達の方法はありま すか。 I think it’s good idea if colleges put an emphasis on speaking or have a speaking test, not just focus on writing, reading and grammar. I know that they are trying to make changes. Many of my students know some English words and grammar but they can’t speak much. I think they study to pass tests. 大学が読み書きや文法よりもっと話すことや会話のテストに重点を置けば変わるのでは ないかと思います。私の生徒の多くは文法や単語は知っているが、あまり英語で話そうと はしていません。生徒はテストのために勉強していると思います。 - Q:Do you have any suggestion for improving English education in Japan? 3 英語教育について何か意見がありますか。 Many of my classes focus a lot on textbooks. It’s good but it would be more useful to learn practical things, like English that you can use while traveling or when studying abroad. I think I teach most effectively in classes where the number of students is around ten. With smaller class the students become much active and want to know more about me. The more they get to know me, the more they want to talk in English. In a big class they can hide but in a smaller class they cannot hide. They get more time to speak. I don’t care if they make mistakes. I just want them to talk. Even saying a few words is good because language is about more than just making perfect students. I think they think they need to have perfect English to talk to me but effort and gestures are more than enough to communicate. 授業の多くが教科書に重点を置いています。良い面もありますが、たとえば海外旅行な どもっと実践的な英語を学ぶべきです。10 人程度のクラスが指導しやすい。生徒たちは少 人数のクラスの方が積極的に私と会話しようとします。人数が多いクラスでは先生の注意 が生徒一人一人に向かないことがありますが、少人数のクラスではすべての生徒に対応で きます。（文法など）会話上の失敗は気にしません。私は生徒と会話がしたく、会話をする ためには単語だけでなくジェスチャーや話そうとする努力が必要です。 Q:-Do you have any advice for other new ALT? 新しいＡＬＴにアドバイスがありますか。 It’s hard to make suggestion because the environment for all ALTs is different. Talking to your teachers is the best thing to do. If they like you, the job is a lot easier. As long as you both know what you want to do, you will feel more comfortable in the class. それぞれのＡＬＴの環境が異なるので、アドバイスは難しい。同僚の先生と 話をするのが最も大切と思います。日本人の先生が私を気に入ってくれれば、 仕事は楽になります。日本人の先生と授業で何を指導すべきかを話し合い、お 互い理解していれば授業はうまく進みます。 ♫尾鷲高校でビリー先生と一緒に指導する北村恵子先生は「話せる英語力を身につけるに は学校教育に課題があります。話す、聞くは実技になるのでこれまでそういった教育はし てきませんでした。限られた授業時間の中で話す時間を増やしていくことが大切だと思い ます。ビリーはスピーチなどの指導もしてくれています」と話していた。 平井麻由和先生は「ビリーは一生懸命に指導してくれています。日本人以上に日本人ら しく、シャイで気遣いのある人です。ＥＳＳクラブの指導でも休日返上で取り組んでくれ ることもあります」と話していた♫ 4 ～紀伊長島区長島でくまの古道美術展 2015 年３月９日～ ★Kumanokodo Art Exhibition★ 紀北町の嵐屋アートの会（北村博司会長）や東京芸大准教授のオーストラリア人女性リ ンダ・デニスさんら主催の「くまの古道美術展イン紀伊長島２０１５～アート、海の街で」 が 28～30 日の３日間、紀伊長島区長島で開かれ、町内外から多くの客でにぎわった。 空間芸術の現代アートから絵画、日本画など伝統的アートまで東京芸大や女子美大生、 町内外の芸術家ら 23 人が長島の新町通り商店街約１㌔を中心に空き店舗や霊術家浜口熊嶽 別邸跡、旧嵐屋旅館跡「花袋の広場」、旧食堂を改装した魚まち歩観会のたまり場など 11 カ所で作品を展示した。 漁網を使って手の形の作品を制作したデニスさんに感想を聞いた。 Q:How was the art exhibition? It was wonderful. We had many people show up. It was more than I expected and I felt that the people in the town were very interesting and friendly. Q:You made an art piece that looks like a finger or a hand. Why did you make it? My theme is touch. I am interested in networking and connecting with people. Net is also network. I thought about how I can make my art. I thought touch is done often with hands. I want people to interact and connect with each year.. In this exhibition there are many people working together. This hand is network power. It is a new expression for me. The fishing net is new material for me. I would like to bring this net into the ocean. Or maybe under water have woman diver, amasan dive with this net. This is a small step. Q:-What do you think we need more of in order to attract more people to Kihoku town? I think trying to continue the exhibition is a good idea. Other artists will learn about this activity and maybe we need the support of the town. If thinking broadly, sports and dance is an expression of the body. Art is an expression of the body and mind. Q:Someone says that it is difficult to understand art because they cannot see inside of an artists mind. That is true. Both sports and art are forms of expression. Both of them are cultural. 5 6 ～日本一周ツアーで紀北町にオーストラリア人など７人が滞在～ 2015 年４月 12 日 オーストラリア・シドニーの旅行会社「セント・ジェームズレール」が主催 する日本一周ツアー「鉄道で巡る日本～桜」に参加のオーストラリア人５人、 イギリス人２人が 11～13 日の２泊３日、紀北町に滞在した。男性３人、女性４ 人で年齢は 65～92 歳。 同社主催のツアーとしては昨年５月に続いて２回目。同社代表のジョンスト ッドネット・オーエンさんと妻の日本人女性石毛貴子さん（36）が同行した。 石毛さんが地元選出の東豊県議が主催する未来のまちづくり勉強会講師とし て昨年５月に来町したことから、昨年７月に初めて紀北町を訪れるツアーを企 画。昨年同様、東県議が紀北町と尾鷲市の行く先などを提案した。 今回は桜前線を追いながら日本滞在１カ月間の旅で、宿泊、旅費を含め１人 約１００万円。３月 27 日の東京から熊本市の熊本城、鹿児島指宿市、長崎県、 佐賀県有田町の有田焼、岡山市の後楽園、姫路市の姫路城、広島市の原爆ドー ム、鳥羽市のミキモト真珠島などを経て紀北町に 11 日午後に到着。 紀伊長島区島原志子の久保農園でイチゴ狩りを楽しみホテル季の座（同区城 ノ浜）に宿泊。12 日は同ホテルのバスで移動し、尾鷲市向井の県立熊野古道セ ンターで同センターサポートスタッフの中井大弼さん（68）と通訳案内士の資 格を持つ富室かな子さん（55）から同センター展示品などの説明を受けた。 向井のぬし熊に立ち寄り、伝統の漆塗りわっぱを購入。熊野古道馬越峠の海 山区鷲毛の登り口から史跡の夜泣き地蔵までを往復した。同区便ノ山の町営種 まき権兵衛の里庭園では尾上壽一町長も駆けつけて歓迎。同園資料館で海山芸 能道場賀楽多と海山笛の会・韻（ひびき）、海山箏（こと）の会の３団体 25 人 が太鼓や笛、箏の演奏で歓迎した。ツアー参加者は太鼓の演奏体験にも取り組 み、メンバーらと交流を 深めた。 紀伊長島区長島に移 動し、地元活性化グルー プの魚まち歩観会の植 田芳男代表ら会員６人 が長島神社や漁師町の 風情が残る長島地区を 徒歩で観光。狭い路地を 7 散策しながら民家の見学やイワシの干物を干す店先で写真撮影。昇降橋の江ノ 浦橋、霊術家浜口熊嶽像などを訪れた。 民家を改修した魚まち歩観会の拠点「魚まちのたまり場」で裏千家師範の東 玲子さんが茶道の薄茶点前を披露。東さんの通訳で地元に伝わる民話の影絵「か んからこぼし」を見た。 この日もホテル季の座で宿泊し、13 日はＪＲで名古屋から京都へ向かった。 ツアーは京都に２泊した後、仙台市からフェリーで北海道苫小牧市、登別市の 登別温泉、青森県大鰐町の大鰐温泉などを訪れ、21 日に東京から帰国する。 日本に訪れるのは初めての オーストラリア人男性ブラッ ドショー・トニーさん（92） は「人生の思い出づくりに参 加した。日本は産業が進んだ 先進国という印象が強い」と 話し、オーストラリア女性ス テファン・キャサリンさん（71） は「父が貨物船の船長していた関係で 10 歳の時に初来日して以来、日本には６ 度目。日本文化や美しい自然、礼儀正しい日本人など大好きな国です」と笑顔 で話した。夫婦で参加したイギリス人男性ブライアン・ティズダルさん（66） は「漁業従事者はイギリスでも減っており、若者が職を求めて田舎から都会へ 出ていくのは日本と同じだ」と話していた。 ほかにも参加者は「おもてなしの心がある町」 「観光地化することによってそ の魅力が失われないでほしい」 「今後も子どもたちに生きた伝統を受け継いでい ってほしい」などと感想を 話していた。 石毛さんは「まだ観光地 化が進んでいない紀北町の 魅力は地域の人との交流や 日本人の日常生活を垣間見 ることができる点。シーズ ンに関係なく手作りの旅が 提供できる面白さがありま す」と話していた。 8 町営種まき権兵衛の里（紀北町海山区便ノ山） Cherry blossoms in Tanemaki Gombe garden 町営海山グラウンド（紀北町海山区相賀） Cherry blossoms in 9Miyama Ground Rick’s Comic Tomodachi is published by Kihoku International Friendship Association (KIfA) <Editorial staff> 山 脇 弘 二 Koji Yamawaki, リチャード・フェン Richard Huynh 奥 村 美 月 Mitsuki Okumura 北 村 慎 平 Shinpei Kitamura 武 村 多 恵 Tae Takemura 事務局：紀北町企画課 Kihoku town office 0597(46)3113 10 090-4790-8968 Koji Yamawaki
