Thanks for being understanding when we try something new. The board met with Soldier Quilts and Charity Quilts after the last guild meeting. I am always amazed that as a quilt guild we can not get our quilts quilted. It is hard to believe that all of you send every quilt out to be quilted by someone else. I know it is a daunting thought to quilt for someone else. However, the people that these quilts are given to are just happy that someone remembers them and their needs. Please consider taking one home and working on it. Take your time with it and if you are like me you will learn more about quilting. See you on August 5 for Peg Bingham. Cyndy Cumberland Valley Quilters Association Page 3 PROGRAMS 2014 August - Following last month’s outstanding lecture and workshop by Jan Wass on Illinois Amish quilts, the guild welcomes Peg Bingham of Ohio for a lecture and half-day workshop on pieced Celtic knot quilts. Her half day workshop on the basic Celtic knot motif sold out completely at our June meeting. Workshop participants were provided with her pattern and are reminded to choose your project and have your fabric cut in advance. September - Our own Christine Copenhaver will share her quilts made from men's neckties. A published author, she has created some stunning quilts, many of which are featured in her new book which we hope will be available for purchase. In the afternoon, she will demonstrate her techniques for working with this "non-traditional" type of fabric. Fee for the demonstration will be $10. Don't miss this one! October 7- Anne Dougherty on Civil War Quilts November 11 - Techniques Round Robin CVQA OFFICERS President: Cyndy Dyer 1st Vice President: Barbara Lowe Rita Stapleton 2nd Vice President: Rose Bulach December 2 – Holiday Party 2015 FUNDRAISER Our first planning meeting brought new ideas that we can start working on right now. But we definitely welcome your input and involvement in all parts of this big event; especially if you have seen great ideas from other shows and guilds, we want to hear from you. Specific jobs are beginning to take shape and we will be looking for people to lead some teams. I believe we should participate where we find happiness and satisfaction. But I've also seen friends blossom unexpectedly trying new tasks. You know the old saying--what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! So please consider the following areas: --Quilt show: all parts. Jury/awards/ribbons; inviting "emeritus" former members for a reunion to be the jury. --New quilt hanging systems such as PVC pipes. --Making fine show quilts especially from our programs. Selling your quilts on commission. --Making small projects (guild sales). Fabric donations will be channeled to these. Please bring us your ideas and we will use some sitnsew time for mass production! --Inviting senior communities, church groups and others for scheduled tours, complete with tea and cookies --General marketing and Public relations. Contact other guilds. --Event location. We are looking to early November 2015. We want to have time to get to know new places and have them know us. --Develop and manage a booklet on the quilts. Advertisers? Sponsors? --Bake sale, food concessions Another firm rule with me is that nobody works alone! If you're new here, or just want to try new things, we will work with you at every step. Best wishes for a great summer. Wanda Wanda Palus Cumberland Valley Quilters Association Page 7 COMMITTEE NEWS CHARITY QUILT NEWS AUGUST BIRTHDAYS I can’t thank you enough for your support for the Thistle Farms Graduation Quilt project. Twenty seven blocks were signed out at the July meeting. This is an excellent start. At the August meeting, I will have the remainder of the green blocks and if those are gone, we will start the red blocks. Please return the patterns to use in the next set of blocks. If you want the pattern you may copy it or wait until the project is finished. I made 40 copies and anyone who wants one can have them. Also please, please return anything that you take with you-baggies, batting, trimmings, tie strings. We reuse everything. And another big thanks to those of you who took bundles to quilt. I don’t like to play favorites, but you know everything stops without you. So much appreciation goes to you from me, the board, and the guild. 1-Carole Shean 4-Valerie Jones 4-Mary Lou Montague 10-Jackie Kelley 14-Nancy Garrison 16-Kitty Mallois 18-Donna Hasty 19-Anne Dougherty 29-Nancy Robichaux 31-Jean Odom I would like to have feedback from the guild on the direction you would like to see the charity committee take in the future. A quilt is a treasure that follows its owners everywhere. A quilt is a present you give yourself. Any day spent quilting is a good day.
