Sorbet Quilt WINTER PROJECT DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Janome Sewing Machine • 1 x Janome Plastic Bobbin • Janome Purple Tip Needles #14 • Scissors or Thread Snips • Standard Zig Zag Foot (A) • Cutting Mat • ¼ Inch Seam Foot (O) • Quilt Ruler • Walking Foot or Dual Acufeed Foot • Ironing Board & Iron • Rotary Cutter INSTRUCTIONS BLOCK CONSTRUCTION FABRICS & NOTIONS Note: Main instructions for a Queen size quilt. Lap size quilt listed in brackets. Finished quilt size: 2m x 2m (Lap size: 1.4m x 1.4m) STEP 1 Wind the bobbin with sewing thread. • 2.2m each of Fabrics A and C (Lap size: 1.1m each) • 0.8m each of Fabric B and D (Lap Size: 0.6m each) STEP 2 • 0.7m Binding Fabric (Lap size: 0.5m) Thread the machine and attach the ¼ inch seam foot. • 2.2m Quilt Wadding (Lap size: 1.6m) STEP 3 • 2.2m Wide Quilt Backing Fabric (Lap size: 1.6m) • Sewing thread for piecing and quilting • Flower head pins or quilting pins • Tape measure • Quilting safety pins Select the piecing stitch on your machine. Note: If your machine has no pre-set piecing stitch then select straight stitch. Set the stitch length to 1.8mm. Set stitch width as per instruction book or instructions with ¼ inch seam foot packaging. STEP 4 CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS Note: WOF = Width of Fabric • PINK Fabric A: Cut 9 - 5” x WOF + Cut 9 - 4” x WOF (Lap size: Cut 6 - 3½” x WOF + Cut 6 - 2½” x WOF) • ORANGE Fabric B: Cut 18 - 1½” x WOF (Lap size: Cut 12 - 1½” x WOF) • YELLOW Fabric C: Cut 9 - 5” x WOF + Cut 9 - 4” x WOF (Lap size: Cut 6 - 3½” x WOF + Cut 6 x 2½” x WOF) • GREEN Fabric D: Cut 18 - 1½” x WOF (Lap size: Cut 12 - 1½” x WOF) • ORANGE Binding: Cut 9 - 2½’’ x WOF(Lap size: Cut 6 x 2½’’ x WOF) Lay out strips in the following order: 5 inch strip fabric A (3½ inch), 1½ inch strip fabric B (1½ inch), 4 inch strip fabric C (2½ inch), 1½ inch strip fabric D (1½ inch), 4 inch strip fabric A (2½ inch), 1½ inch strip fabric B (1½ inch), 5 inch strip fabric C (3½ inch), 1½ inch strip fabric D (1½ inch). STEP 5 STEP 15 Stitch all strips in the layout above. You have now created 4 blocks. See picture – cutting lines in blue. STEP 6 Press all seams open. STEP 7 Repeat this process so that you have 9 strip sets the width of the fabric. (Lap size 6 sets x WOF). 1 STEP 8 From each strip set precisely cut 2 x 20.5 inch squares (Lap size: 3 x 14.5 inch squares). You will end up with 18 squares. (Lap size: 18 squares) 4 2 3 STEP 9 STEP 16 Take a 20.5 inch square (Lap size: 14.5 inch square). Lay right side up on a flat surface with the wide strip of PINK Fabric A on the left hand side. The stripes should be vertical. Place each block into a separate pile. Repeat this process until all squares have been cut. You should now have 36 blocks divided evenly into 4 piles. Take another 20.5 inch square (Lap size: 14.5 inch square). Lay this on top of the other square with right sides facing. The large strip of Fabric A should be at the top with the stripes horizontal. STEP 17 Iron open all blocks. Block 1 Block 2 QUILT BLOCK LAYOUT: STEP 10 Pin the 2 squares together, ensuring the sides and corners are lined up accurately. STEP 11 Stitch around all 4 sides of the square using a ¼ inch seam. STEP 12 Repeat this process until you have 9 blocks. (Lap size: 9 blocks) STEP 13 Lay a stitched square on your cutting mat so that the stripes are as pictured below. STEP 14 Place your quilting ruler on the fabric from corner to corner of the stitching diagonally. Cut along this line. Do not move the blocks once the first cut is made. Place your quilting ruler on the fabric from corner to corner in the remaining direction. Cut along this line so that you have cut a cross in the block. Block 3 Block 4 QUILT MAP: Row 1 Block 1 STEP 31 Block 3 Block 4 Block 2 Rotate 180° Rotate 180° Row 2 Block 3 Block 1 Block 1 Block 3 Block 2 Block 4 Block 3 Block 1 STEP 32 Block 4 Block 2 Select straight stitch or any stitch appropriate for quilting. Set the stitch length to 3.0mm. Rotate 180° Rotate 180° Block 1 Block 3 Rotate 180° Rotate 180° Block 2 Block 4 Rotate 180° Rotate 180° Block 4 Block 2 Rotate 90° anticlockwise Rotate 90° clockwise STEP 33 Thread the machine with the thread selected for quilting. STEP 34 Quilt through all thicknesses as desired starting at the centre and working your way out to the edges. STEP 18 Working from the above quilt map sew the blocks of row 1 together with a ¼ inch seam. STEP 19 Repeat this process with each row, working from left to right until all 6 rows are sewn. STEP 20 Press seams open. STEP 35 STEP 21 Stitch a basting stitch a ¼ inch in from the edge of the quilt top. Place rows 1 and 2 right sides together lining up seams. Pin. STEP 36 STEP 22 Remove any remaining quilting safety pins. Stitch them together with a ¼ inch seam. STEP 37 STEP 23 Continue sewing all rows together from top to bottom until the quilt top is complete. Trim the excess backing and wadding back to ¼ inch from the edge of the quilt top. STEP 38 STEP 24 Press all seams open. Attach the Walking foot or Dual Acufeed foot to your machine. Select straight stitch and increase the stitch length to 3.0mm. STEP 25 STEP 39 Press backing fabric. Attach the orange binding around the quilt edge. STEP 26 Lay backing out taught on the surface you are going to baste on. STEP 27 Lay wadding out on top of the backing. STEP 28 Place the pieced quilt top onto the wadding ensuring there is wadding and backing sticking out from every side of the quilt top. STEP 29 Smooth out the quilt to make sure that there are no bubbles and the seams are sitting straight and flat. STEP 30 Using quilting safety pins baste the quilt top roughly 6” apart or the distance recommended on your wadding packaging. CONGRATULATIONS AND ENJOY YOUR SORBET QUILT!
