I am sure many of you have been watching the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. I
am very intrigued with the all-over diamond quilt designs seen in the high-flying
flags to the winners’ medals. According to the Sochi games press release: “The
Olympic patchwork quilt was developed by Bosco’s creative department and given
to the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee. Their goal was to represent a diverse
range of emotions and feelings, connecting concepts like Motherland, Family,
Culture, Time, Olympism, Peace, Nobility, Friends, Memory, Honour, Dreams,
Beauty, Freedom, Pride, Warmth, Happiness, Greatness, Reliability, Victory,
Creativity, Hospitality, Creation, Future, Russia and the Planet Earth. Every region
in the world is proud of its unique origins, and it is no different in Russia. That is
why there are so many different local traditions, songs and crafts that highlight
the individuality of their creators, each valuable in its own right. Bosco had a
wealth of choices to represent Russia’s rich diversity, but in the end they settled
on something familiar, warm and welcoming "the patchwork quilt”.
So what if "Quilting" was an Olympic sport? What would that look like? What
would you do to get into the games? If you were in the Quilter's Olympics, what
would YOU take the GOLD in? As crazy as it seems, I know a few of us could
qualify for some of these events:
 Most scandalous fabric collection in the county
 Best Display of Fat Quarter's
 The Most UFO's in our Quilt Guild
 Fastest "Un-sewing" Time with our speedy Seam Ripper
 "Staring-at-a-piece-of-fabric-debating-if-this-project-is-worthy-ofactually-cutting-it" category
 Cross Country Stash Collection Dash
 Sewing Room Obstacle Course
 Mad Dash to finish for the Quilt Show Marathon
 Etc. and please share your ideas for new events with me before the next
meeting!
Also in February, members will be sharing "FYI Sessions" during the regular
meeting. We can always learn from our quilting peers. We were all beginner
quilters at one time. I still rely on my favourite reference book by Better Homes
and Gardens “Complete Guide to QUILTING". It has more that 750 step-by-step
colour photographs and includes every basic method and technique.
I'm looking forward to seeing your PILLOW CHALLENGE Creations this month.
Until then ~ President Karen
P.S. Please bring one sheet of plain paper, paper scissors and a pen/pencil for a
short group activity ~ K.

CONGRATULATIONS MARILYN BROCKLEBANK
Marilyn Brocklebank's quilting entry "Thistle Pod", which
was machine quilted by Doreen Wilken, won third place at
the February 2014 American Quilters Society Show in
Phoenix, Arizona. The quilt was entered in the Bed Quilt
– Computer-Aided Category. This is really an awesome
achievement for these two New Millennium Quilters' Guild
Members. Marilyn had to do a lot of work to get the quilt
accepted into this prestigious juried show.
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES!

February 18, 2014 afternoon session is from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at the Knox Presbyterian Church,
Walkerton (prior to the monthly meeting)
We will be making coasters for handouts at the Quilt Show in June.
Please bring your sewing machine – neutral threads – regular sewing notions. Anyone who is unable to bring
their sewing machine but would like to participate is welcome to come. We need people to cut, press and
organize the fabrics for sewing.
Anyone who has surplus 5” squares, fat quarters, fabric scraps can bring them along. We are looking for some
material that is sewing related if possible. We also need plainer fabrics for matching. Anyone who has batting
ends that are at least 5” wide please bring these as well. Fabrics will also be provided to those of you who do
not have the above.
Thank you to the ladies who came out in January to sew for the Guild for Community Outreach and for the
making of the coasters for the Show in June. Thanks a million.
Outreach will not be having a work session on Tuesday afternoon. Marilyn will be at the meeting early
for anyone who wants a project to work at home over the next month.

March 18 - Heather Stewart Trunk Show
April 15 - Heather Bell from mydyestudio, West Lorne, Trunk Show
Heather has taken a class in the United States with Marti Michel. When you do a log cabin block with
Mariti's rulers you never have to trim the blocks when you are done. Heather had some of Mariti's rulers for
sale at our November meeting. Go to Google and type in Mariti Michel and you will find lots of websites and
YouTube shows with Marti. We also have in the library a book called ABC of Log Cabin by Mariti Michel.

TIP OF THE MONTH
http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/24480/reuse-plastic-bags-for-smooth-sewing
I have found a simple solution for taming fabrics that are difficult to sew. If my
fabric (such as batting, bulky or loose-weave fabrics, faux fur, or Velcro) doesn't
glide smoothly over the machine plate or gets stuck in the machine foot as I'm
sewing, I use a plastic grocery or other store bag to help. I prefer the bags from
Jo-Ann Fabrics because they are almost transparent. I cut the bag to make it one
layer; if I have a lot of seams to sew, I cut the bag into strips about 2 to 3 inches
wide. I place the plastic on top of or beneath the fabric and sew normally, stitching
through the plastic. The plastic helps the fabric slide smoothly as the stitches are
made, and a simple tug easily removes the plastic after the seam is complete.
