Now we encourage you to do your part by participating wherever you can… by attending the show, entering some quilts, taking classes, making a “mini” for the auction, taking a ‘chance’ on our Basket Walk Raffle, and/or attending our quilt award ceremony, lecture, and trunk show given by renowned teacher Edyta Sitar. Our guilds have each been asked to contribute quilts that have been given a farewell gift to their past outgoing presidents. The President’s name, Quilt Guild, years(s) of term, and any interesting comments about each quilt will be displayed. Take some time to look at this special exhibit, and see how different presidents have been rewarded for all their time and talents during their presidency! And who knows, some day you may be receiving a special quilt like those in this exhibit! 2 BQE-tique At every BQE show, booth space is set aside especially for selling our guild members’ handmade, quilt-related items or other sewing-related accessories. The only rule is that your items cannot compete with those that our Merchant Mall vendors are selling. You may sell quilted items such as book covers, placemats, table runners, kitchen accessories, quilt tops, unfinished projects (UFOs), apparel, jewelry, sewing accessories, portable light carriers, and even antique fabrics and quilts. Our goal is to offer you a venue to sell your items while not encroaching on what our vendors have brought to sell. If you want more information about the arrangements and fees for selling your quilt-related items on a consignment basis at our BQE-tique booth, please send an email to: [email protected] or send a business-size, self-addressed, stamped envelope by mail to: Elaine Power, 4360 NW 2nd Ct., Coconut Creek, FL 33066 Elaine Rowe, QUIP President from 2009 to 2013, with her farewell quilt. Our Quilt Judge Cindy Erickson began sewing in Jr. High Home Economics, making her own clothes and crafts. She officially became a quilter when she was introduced to the rotary cutter and half-square triangle in 1985. As an interior decorator for eight years in Arizona and Utah, she began making and selling appliquéd wall hangings, clothing and crafts as a home business and found her interests expanding to include teaching quilting and making commission pieces. Today, she makes samples for companies like P&B, Springs, RJR, and Quiltmaker magazine. Cindy is very involved in several local quilt guilds and has held the office of president for the Omaha Quilters Guild, a member of the Nebraska State Quilt Guild, and the Cottonwood Quilt Guild, The Appliqué Society, NQA and AQS. Cindy became a National Quilting Association Certified Quilt Judge in 1998 and has judged local and national shows around the country. She currently teaches quilting and specialty clothing classes at Bernina Sewing Center in Omaha. She specializes in teaching rotary and sewing machine skills in all aspects of quiltmaking to all skill levels and teaches several wearable art classes. Professional Quilter Magazine nominated her for National Teacher of the Year in 2009. She has co-authored books and a line of Block of the Month patterns with Jo Morton. One pattern was featured on the cover of the Keepsake Quilting catalog, Spring 2001. She has been published in Quiltmaker, Fons and Porter magazines and Leisure Arts publications. Cindy’s quilts have been shown in AQS, Houston, PIQS and NQA. Today Cindy balances being a busy quilter with enjoying her two grandsons and going fishing as often as possible! A spool can be defined as a cylinder or reel on which a quantity of thread, yarn or wire is wound for use in a particular machine or device. The definition and design for your quilt can be anything, and we hope you’ll make one to enter! There are no fabric requirements but there are a few rules: Challenge Quilt Rules: 1. Size can be any combination of a length and width with the perimeter totaling NO MORE than 144”; your quilt can be any size you want smaller than 144” total, as long as the 4 sides do not add up to more than 144” total. 2. Orientation can be either portrait or landscape. 3. Entry must be a standard quilt with three layers and quilted creative finishing allowed. On the back, there should be a 4” sleeve and a label. 4. The BQE Challenge is open to any member of the five Broward County Guilds: Coral Springs, East Sunrise, Quilting in the Pines, Southern Stars and West Broward. 5. There is no entry fee. 6. Only one entry per person. Use the regular BQE entry form on page 9 for your challenge quilt. Information for your challenge quilt entry delivery to the show will be the same as for all BQE quilts. Quilts will be judged on theme interpretation, construction and overall appearance. Cash prizes will be awarded. Your Challenge Quilt entry is eligible for the Viewer’s Choice Award. MARCH 12 – 14, 2015 3 Miniature Quilt Auctions Here is a wonderful opportunity to help make money for your guild…make a miniature quilt! It’s a chance for you to do something a bit different on a small scale from your usual work. Do your best work to bring in the highest prices for your guild. A small portion of the proceeds go to BQE. There will be two ways for selling your mini-quilts: A Live Auction on Friday, March 13th starting just after 6 PM, and an Online Auction will be available on our website that will be ongoing for a few weeks. Your guild will determine which auction your mini-quilt will be placed into for sale. All mini-quilts must be submitted to your guild by early February for classification and be handed in by your BQE representative at Quilt Collection on Thursday, February 12, 2015. Miniature Quilt Guidelines • Size: Maximum size is 96” perimeter total. No minimum size. • Techniques: May be pieced, appliquéd, or a combination of the two. May be embellished with beads, threads, buttons, etc. May be hand- or machinequilted, but not tied. • Acceptable: Whole cloth designs, crazy patch miniatures, landscapes, and pictorials, but not single block quilts (for example, no potholders). • Appearance: Quilts must be clean and free of pencil marks, stains, pet hairs, and other odors. Quilts must be bound on all edges. • Additions: Attach a hanging sleeve so the new owner can hang it right away. Add a label to the back that includes your name, your guild affiliation and BQE 2015. • Form: Prepare a Miniature Auction Entry Form available from your BQE guild representative or download a form from www.browardquiltexpo.com and turn it in with your quilt. Describe your quilt completely and clearly on the form so the auctioneer may describe it accurately and bring in the best price. All miniature quilts for the auction must be approved by the Mini-Quilt Auction Committee. Donated mini-quilts are eligible for the Viewers’ Choice Award. Submission Your mini may be entered in the BQE show for judging before any auction. In this case, please submit your quilt with both the regular Quilt Entry Form and the Mini-Quilt Auction Form, completely filled out. Please give your mini to your guild’s BQE representative by your guild’s February meeting to also ensure your donation is listed in the BQE show book. Remember, your guild determines before Quilt Collection on February 12 - which auction your mini-quilt will be placed into. Questions? Fortunately, for all of us, Edyta's mother recognized her passion for fabric and thus began her journey with fabric and sewing. One of Edyta’s biggest blessings is her marriage to husband, Michael. She not only fell in love, she was introduced to a Sitar family tradition of quilting by her mother-in-law, Carol, and grandmother-in-law, Anna. Quilting has enabled Edyta to express herself about the objects or occasions of her surroundings - her designs are her avenue to release passion! “My children and my husband are my greatest motivation. This is the Cinderella dream for me. Being able to do what I love and share this love with others is the greatest feeling and reward I could imagine!" The combination of inspiration, a love for fabric, a keen eye for color, and her family teachings blended into the recipe for a talent in constructing amazing quilts, creating innovative quilting patterns for Laundry Basket Quilts, designing beautiful Traditional and Batik fabrics for MODA and stunning threads for Aurifil. She has published 5 books to date, been featured in magazines world-wide, and her quilts have been honored by receiving many awards. As the founder and owner of her company, Laundry Basket Quilts, www.laundrybasketquilts.com, Edyta is proud to carry on her family tradition that fabrics and threads have seamlessly stitched together through the generations. Her true passion and quilter’s spirit shine through her classes, workshops, and presentations. She travels all over the world sharing her experiences and connecting with quilters of all levels through the inspiring stories about the quilts she makes. Karen Kay Buckley - teaching 2 full day, 1 half day workshops Since her first quilting class in 1982, Karen sought every quilting class possible to improve her techniques. In 1986, Karen and her husband decided to open a small shop in Pennsylvania, devoted strictly to quilting and quilting instruction. She immediately began to develop a business plan and using her education background, developed classes and lesson plans. The business grew by leaps and bounds. She taught beginners through advanced classes, dozens of workshops, and gave many lectures. Karen continued to attend workshops herself, and used some of these quilters’ ideas for classes & workshops. By 1988 she began creating her own classes and patterns. After selling her quilt shop in 1989, she decided to leave teaching quilting and mastering techniques to others behind, and devoted her time to writing, teaching, and designing. After finishing a book on beginners quilting in 1990, Karen wrote 3 books for American Quilter’s Society. Her 4th book was released in 2000, and she has written several articles for quilting magazines. Karen has self-published many patterns and her own book in 2006. In 2008, she released a DVD, Hand and Machine Applique: The Karen Kay Buckley Way. Her most recent project has been working on a pattern/book called Japanese Garden Quilt. She has also been busy developing her own products, such as Perfect Circles, Perfect Ovals, Bigger Perfect Circles, Perfect Stems and Perfect Scissors. Karen has made over 300 quilts, and has received numerous awards, including 9 Best of Show awards, including the 2013 Best of Show at the American Quilter's Association Show in Paducah. She was voted teacher of the year by the Professional Quilter Magazine in 1997. Her work has been featured in many magazines and calendars, and she has 14 cover quilts to her credit. One quilt was chosen to be placed on display in the US Capitol in 1992, and another in 1993. She has appeared on Simply Quilts and AQS show American Quilter. She is busy teaching, judging, and designing; her website is www.karenkaybuckley.com.
