With the Christmas holiday and start of the New Year now past, all of us on
the Delaware 4-H staff send you our best wishes during these warm times of
family and fellowship!

Before February date books become filled with activities, we wanted to invite
you to join us in bringing current and potential leaders together for the 2015
Delaware 4-H State Leader Forum……you’ll won’t want to miss this special
day!
We are pleased and excited to be having the event on the campus of the
University of Delaware in Newark! The morning program will include a brief
welcome and continental breakfast before we get off to our sessions.
Following the first two workshops, we will be enjoying fellowship with a
special luncheon ceremony as we recognize our 2015 Salute to Excellence
award winners. The afternoon program will consist of the final workshop and
conclude with an evaluation. We plan to end our day at 3:00 p.m. so you’ll
have time to get home early and start putting all of the new ideas you learned
into action!
Attached are the registration form, workshop descriptions, and schedule for
the day. There will be coach bus transportation roundtrip from Kent and
Sussex Counties. Please be sure to select three choices for each workshop in
order of your preference and return your registration form by
January 30. Registration is available online. This is the preferred
method. You can send in your payment with the form after you have
registered online. Please note that the workshops will be filled on a “firstcome, first-served” basis, so the earlier you register the better chance you
will have of getting your first choice. The cost of the Forum is $15.00, which
helps to offset lunch. We look forward to seeing you in Newark on February 7!

Put it Up! Preserving Foods for Youth ~ Presented by Kathleen Splane, Extension Agent, University
of Delaware
Join this workshop to learn about a new series of lessons filled with hands-on activities designed for
4-Hers that guide youth in the science of safe food preservation. The colorful curriculum presented in
this session will expose young people to safe ways to eat healthy food all year long.
Kitchen Chemistry: Teaching STEM Using Common Household Items ~ Presented by Autumn
Starcher, New Castle County 4-H Leader
This workshop will include experiment demonstrations and handouts to take home so you can be more
comfortable teaching these lessons to your club. Experiments will include making slime out of borax and
glue, seeing how the pH of household chemicals can change the color of a solution made from red
cabbage and making elephant toothpaste from yeast, dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Join the
fun!
*Chaperoning: A Toolkit for Field Trip Chaperones ~ Presented by Karen Johnston, Extension
Agent, University of Delaware
Would you like to make your field trips an experience that develops life skills in your youth while having
a great experience? Then join this interactive session where you will learn new and fun ways to
maximize the field trip experience by engaging youth in developing awareness of safety and discussion
of targeted skills they will be learning on their trips. Eventually, youth will be able to lead these
discussions alongside adults using the tools you’ll receive in this training.
Learn about the Junior Duck Stamp Program ~ Presented by Dawn Webb, Kent County 4-H Leader
This Program encourages individuals in kindergarten through high school to observe, understand, and
ultimately share, what they have learned about waterfowl observation. By creating a unique art entry
for Delaware’s Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, the student’s learning progression can be assessed. Join
this fun workshop to learn more about this unique program!
*Project Books ~ Presented by Doug Crouse, Interim State Program 4-H Leader, University of
Delaware
One of the most important aspects of a youth’s experience in 4-H is their demonstration of work. Project
Books are a means of making sure 4-H youth understand and show their work. Join Doug Crouse,
Interim State Program 4-H Leader, to get a leg up on a process that can sometimes be misunderstood
but when properly done, can have a lasting impact on the career of a 4-H member and put them on a
path towards success.

This workshop is intended for new leaders in order to orientate them on the basics of Delaware 4-H!
Anytime you join something new, it can be stressful, but 4-H shouldn’t be! This workshop will ease those
“newbie” concerns and get you started off on the right track as a new Delaware 4-H Volunteer Leader!
*First Aid/CPR (1 of 2) ~ Presented by Caroline Romeo, Kent County 4-H Leader * DOUBLE
SESSION
This course is designed to help everyday people learn the skills necessary to identify emergencies
and help someone who is in need of life saving CPR. Those who complete this course will receive

Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness ~ Presented by Jill Jackson, Sussex County 4-H Agent,

Are you looking for new ways to teach your club members about Healthy Living? How about ways to
prepare the youth for the Foods & Nutrition Judging Contest? The Choose Health: Food, Fun, and
Fitness curriculum is a wonderful resource. Come learn about the curriculum and the variety of
interactive activities that can help your club members learn about nutrition while having fun.
*Diversity: Knocking Down Barriers to Promote Greater Inclusion in 4-H ~ Presented by
Rene Diaz, Extension Agent, University of Delaware and Mallory Vogl, Extension Agent, University of
Delaware
Diversity can be a daunting term. This session will explore the multi-faceted term “diversity” and debunk
some of the myths. Activities and topics will be featured to encourage a positive discussion on diversity
and develop strategies to incorporate an inclusive outlook into our Delaware 4-H program.
Horse Sense-Equine Farm Safety Training ~ Presented by Susan Garey, Extension Specialist,
University of Delaware
Have you ever worked on a farm or on an equine facility? Maybe you’ve dealt with a bad mannered
horse, or possibly know someone who as been injured while working with horses. Equine experts from
Michigan State University’s My Horse University and eXtension's Horse Quest group are offering a new
course for youth who currently handle or work with horses. During this workshop we will explore this
free training program which contains eleven short courses, which all include videos and activities while
providing important horse safety information. Students who complete each course will receive a
certificate of completion. These courses are self-paced and full of learning opportunities which are
perfect for 4-H members and equine project groups.
*Name and Emblem ~ Presented by Doug Crouse, Interim State 4-H Program Leader, University of
Delaware
Using the 4-H name and emblem is something all of us in the Delaware 4-H program do on a daily basis
be it in newsletters or event programs. While it may seem pretty straightforward, the application and
use of the name and emblem is a formal process through USDA that all new and current leaders should
be familiar. Join Doug Crouse in a discussion on the importance of the name and emblem as he outlines
situations where it can and can not be used in your club programming.

Ornament Fun! ~ Presented by Michele Ernst and Maureen Ernst, New Castle County 4-H Leaders
Tired of looking at the same ornaments on your tree year after year? Well come and learn how to jazz it
up with handmade decorations. This workshop will help you get your 4-Hers ready to enter items in the
Delaware State Fair. While in the workshop you will not only learn how to make budget friendly items
but also learn which categories to place them in come Fair time!
Targeting Life Skill Development Through 4-H Curriculum ~ Presented by Mallory Vogl, University
of Delaware 4-H Agent and Kaitlin Klair, New Castle County 4-H Program Assistant
In this workshop, you will develop an understanding of the Targeting Life Skills Model and the
Experiential Learning Model, and be able to implement these models into your 4-H program. You will be
exposed to various 4-H citizenship curricula including mentoring, bully prevention and skill building.
Engaging Youth in Mobile Animal Science Recordkeeping ~ Presented by Susan Garey, Extension
Specialist, University of Delaware
There aren’t many 4-H members that would rank recordkeeping high on their list of enjoyable project
tasks, but mobile technology opens new possibilities for 4-H recordkeeping. Imagine a mobile app that
allows youth and families to enter and analyze data on growth, finances, feed, management practices
and project activities. As part of the National 4-H Livestock App Design Team, I will share research
compiled regarding record keeping processes, development decisions, and use of the mobile
recordkeeping app. This app has relevance for all animal projects. Workshop participants can bring their
Apple device and download the free app during the workshop to explore it firsthand.
Container Gardening ~ Presented by J.W. Wistermayer, New Castle County Master Gardener Volunteer
Practical ideas and basic skills are all a part of establishing a container garden. What are the other
ingredients that make up a successful container planting? Stop by our Creative Containers A-Z
Workshop and take home a few new “old” ideas and learn skills that you can pass along for fun,
interesting and useful container projects!
Restore the Monarchs, Feed ’Em Milkweed ~ Presented by Ellen Hahn, Fred Mann, and Sande
Taylor, New Castle County Master Gardener Volunteers
Learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, its migration, and its dependence on the milkweed
plant for survival. In recent years, as milkweed has been eradicated from the landscape for various
reasons, the number of Monarchs has plummeted. Help restore milkweed so that future generations can
enjoy this beautiful butterfly and its incredible migration!
4-H Avian Bowl: Feel the Egg-citement! ~ Presented by Dr. Brigid McCrea, Assistant Professor &
State Poultry Specialist, Delaware State University
4-H Avian Bowl is a quiz bowl where avian knowledge and just plain chicken fun is the name of the
game. The rules of play will be covered as well as coaching strategies. New and old team members are
welcomed as this is a chance to pair up individuals who would otherwise not have a team. As time
allows, a short practice round will be played for "egg-cellent" bragging rights!
