Below is information regarding two opportunities you may want to share with your members. These opportunities are a great way for your members to gain hands-on learning experiences in the areas of agriculture production as well as financial literacy. Please share the following information with members of your club interested in loans for youth to purchase livestock project animals or start other agricultural enterprises. Farm Service Agency (FSA) makes operating loans to individual rural youths to finance income-producing, agriculture-related projects of modest size in connection with their participation in 4-H clubs, Future Farmers of America, and similar organizations. Each project must be part of an organized and supervised program of work. The project must be planned and operated with the help of the organization advisor, produce sufficient income to repay the loan, and provide the youth with practical business and educational experience in agriculture-related skills. For more information, visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov/FSA/webapp?area=home&subject=fmlp&topic=ryl Michigan Rural Rehabilitation Corporation http://www.mrrccollegeloans.com/ Program/Project Title: 4-H/FFA Special Projects Loan Target Group: 4-H and FFA members Loans are available at low interest rates for 4-H and FFA members to help them purchase animals to raise for show at the county or state fairs. Repayment terms are very lenient and no payment is expected until the animal has been sold at the fair auction. Loans are also made for multi-year breeder projects and small crop projects. Special repayment terms are negotiated with each borrower providing for payments over a period for up to four years. The programs provide young people an opportunity to experience a "hands on" loan process and promotes the importance of learning to repay an indebtedness on a timely basis. County-Wide 4-H Dog Practices MARK YOUR CALENDARS! March 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13 At this point, the plan is to have the meetings be from 7:00 - 8:30 pm on Wednesday evenings at the fairgrounds Main Pavilion. I hope to line up some professional handlers and some other speakers to help give our youth and the leaders some "mini workshops" during some of these meetings so stay tuned! These meetings will provide valuable training and insight to 4-H’ers. If you can’t attend, you may miss some critical tidbits that could mean the difference in your class placements. These should be considered an important resource. Additional resources available through the 4-H office are the 4-H Showmanship manual, The 4-H Agility Manual and the 4-H Dog Obedience Manual. However DO NOT limit your knowledge base to these 4-H resources. As in any other project, there are many valuable resources to use. 4-H is about real life experiences. The 4-H Dog Project follows the AKC guidelines and rules. Be familiar with them! Know common lingo used in the "real, professional world of dogs". DO NOT rely strictly on the 4-H manuals as your preparation! If you have been in other 4-H projects, I doubt the 4-H manual was your only source of information. That just wouldn't make sense now would it? Another opportunity for learning and practice is the "Fun Match" put on every year at MSU Thanksgiving weekend (usually Friday evening) Showmanship is always offered and would be a good experience for new and returning project members! For those that do not have an official "dog leader" , you are welcome to practice with any group willing to work with you. My 4-H meetings will be on Wednesday evenings from 7 - 8:30 pm (any day there is school) in Eaton Rapids. We will be starting those meetings in the next few weeks. You can jump in anytime BUT we will no longer accept new participants to our meetings after March 1 as it would not be fair to hold back those who have been practicing and learning all year. We want to stop by and observe/participate in the club happenings to learn more about you and feel the pulse of Ingham County 4-H. We could prepare something or simply come by to "hang out." Let us know when and where you'll be meeting and we’d enjoy the visit. Just a reminder that the annual summary financial report was due October 15. As usual, this will need to be completed before reenrollment can take place. Our new target date to begin online enrollment is January 1, 2015. Don’t forget to have your club submit two ornaments answering Life’s Little Questions! We look forward to hearing from you about your next club meeting.
