Norman County Fair Dates
4-H Volunteers, Youth and Supporters
The dates for the 2014 Norman County Fair have
been set. The fair will be Wednesday June 25thSaturday June 28th, 2014 (Four Days). Look
forward to hearing more about this exciting time
of the year for 4-Hers!
Due to the anticipated winter storm for the next
two days, the Norman and Clay County
Volunteer Training that was to be held Tuesday,
December 3rd at the Family Services Building in
Moorhead will be postponed until after the first of
the year. The topic is relevant for most clubs as
it is about retaining our older youth, so I hope
you will consider attending in 2014. Look for
upcoming announcements!
4-H Holiday Cookie Baking Adventure
We are also cancelling the 4-H Holiday Cookie
Baking Adventure that was scheduled
for Saturday, December 7th at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Hendrum, due to
scheduling conflicts and unforeseen
circumstances. It is too difficult to reschedule
during the busy holiday time. Please
look for opportunities for learning new things in
4-H after the first of the year.
4-H Curriculum
As you are exploring your projects for the year,
please don’t forget to check out the 4-H
Curriculum available for the projects! The
curriculum has many ideas and information
about the various project areas! There are fun,
learn-by-doing activities and information about
the project! Check out individual online project
sites at www.4-hcurriculum.org. Please check
with the Extension Office to see if we have copies
of the curriculum or one can order online at
www.4-Hmall.org. Another place to look for
project resources is at www.4-H.umn.edu. If you
have questions, please call the Extension Office
for more information.

Experience of Youth and Adults
Presented by: Rod Buchele, Kansas State
University; Molly Frendo, Michigan State
University; Mark Light, The Ohio State University;
Kari Robideau, University of Minnesota
Technology can be a great tool to support better
communication and learning with 4-H
participants. However, keeping up with the latest
trends and changes can be challenging and
overwhelming. This session will share some easy
ways that technology can help 4-H leaders be
better connected with youth participants. It will
also briefly explore ideas on integrating
technology into 4-H projects to enhance the life
skill development and 21
young people.

Message from
Dorothy
Dear 4-H Families/Volunteers:
Social and emotional skills are
an essential part of every young
person's learning and development, and
contribute to success in school, college and
careers. In fact, some research suggests that
skills like self-confidence, perseverance,
empathy, teamwork, critical thinking, initiative
and self-direction are better predictors of success
in life than standard academic measures.
We also know that families, schools and
communities are all important in helping to
strengthen social and emotional skills in
youth. Youth programs like 4-H play an
important role and are uniquely equipped to
support social and emotional learning. 4-H’s
learn-by-doing approach empowers youth to
direct their own learning and provides
opportunities to work with other youth on topics
they are passionate about. In addition, our
group process opportunities provide members
practice in engaging with others different
than themselves and thus enhance social and
emotional learning abilities.
Parents and adult volunteers can contribute to
the social and emotional learning of youth in
many ways. To learn more about what you can
do to support the social and emotional
learning of youth go to www.casel.org/socialand-emotional-learning/frequently-askedquestions.
Sincerely,
Dorothy M. Freeman
Associate Dean and State 4-H Director

Cloverbud Grade Change
New in 2013 - Minnesota 4-H has taken a look at
the Cloverbud program and made some
adaptations. Beginning this fall, Cloverbuds will
be available for youth in grades K-2. Third
graders should be enrolling as 4-H members with
specific projects. As third graders are re-enrolling
in 4-HOnline the project area must be updated
with projects (like food and nutrition,
photography, beef, etc.) instead of the Cloverbud
project. You will also find a new Cloverbud
information sheet for parents, guardians and
mentors, which outlines the program options and
characteristics as well as the rules that apply in
competitive settings. If you have questions
about Cloverbuds please contact your county
Program Coordinator.
