Guidelines for CVAC Youth Corps Membership
Eligibility and Application
1. Any person who is a high school sophomore or junior residing in the Town of New Castle may
submit an application for membership as a Youth Member. Youth Members must be 16 to be able
to ride on Ambulance Calls but may apply prior to turning 16.
2. The application must be signed and approved by one parent or legal guardian of the applicant.
3. The application must include one reference from a person of authority such as a coach, teacher,
guidance counselor, employer, etc. who is not a relative. This application should be mailed to
“Youth Advisor, Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O.Box 453, Chappaqua, NY, 10514.”
4. The number of Youth members shall not exceed 22 at any one time, except as authorized by the
officers.
Selection
1. All prospective Youth members and a parent or legal guardian should attend an information
session to understand the roles and responsibilities of Youth Corps members as well as the level of
commitment required.
2. All applicants shall be interviewed by a group including the current Youth Corps Captains or
designees, the Youth Corps advisor, and two other adult CVAC members.
3. The applicants will be selected based on their applications, references, and interviews.
Probationary Youth Membership
All Youth members will be considered probationary Youth members until they are CPR certified,
have passed the "rig test", and attended house duty at least eight (8) times.
A Youth member shall not be entitled to ride in the ambulance in response to a call until they are
CPR certified, have passed the "rig test", and attended house duty at least eight (8) times.
Rights and responsibilities:
Youth Corps members shall be governed by all the rules and regulations that govern adult
members. In addition:
A. No youth member shall drive the ambulance.
B. No youth member will be left solely responsible for the direct care of a patient.
C. No youth member will substitute for a driver or EMT.
D. All youth members will be available for duty on a regular basis unless excused with permission
of the captain or youth officer.
E. Youth members will not ride overnight shifts unless they are accompanying their own Corps
parent on their regularly-assigned shift.
F. Youth members will not respond to a call from school during regular school hours.
Suspension or removal:
If a Youth Corps member does not consistently attend three House Duties per month and cover
three 4 hour shifts per month and does not provide a reason to the Youth Corps Captains or the
Youth Corps Advisor, the Youth Corps member may be asked to resign.
If a Youth Corps member acts in a fashion which in the judgment of the Youth Advisor and the
Officers of CVAC is not consistent with the best interests of our patients, CVAC, or the community,
the Youth Corps member may be asked to resign.
