2014 Election for 2015 AHVRP President

2014 Election for 2015 AHVRP President-Elect
(Three-year commitment to become president in 2016 and immediate past president in 2017)
Name: Angela Femia, CAVS
Title: Director, Community Reinvestment
Employed by: Summa Health System
City/State: Akron, Ohio
Why I am interested in serving as President-Elect:
I am passionate about the AHVRP organization. If elected, I pledge to make
the AHVRP organization my full time volunteer commitment, my primary
service focus. During this time of transformative change in health care, I believe the role of the DVS
is more important than ever. Our members need our organization to act as an advocate on our
behalf, provide innovative ideas and education, and help preserve the future of our profession both
for us in the present and for the next generation. My leadership style respects and learns from the
past while seeking new ideas for the future. I strongly believe that we must educate our members to
be their own best advocate in their organizations. It is time for the DVS profession to find its voice
on the national level, and in this raising of our voices, find the inner message about how health care
volunteerism impacts our hospitals and communities for the better.

Title: Program Manager, Volunteer Services
Employed by: UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's
City/State: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Why I am interested in serving on the AHVRP Board of
Directors:
I am so impressed with what AHVRP has had to offer me in my role of Volunteer Services
Manager. Through the list serve, webinars, educational materials and conferences, I have been able
to gather information and ideas to make the program in my hospital stronger. I have met
electronically, and in person, incredible people who offer me perspective, support, feedback and
encouragement. It is my hope that I would be able to deliver this same contribution to AHVRP and
my peers. Volunteerism is my passion. To have the impact of volunteers realized, celebrated and
recognized drives me every day. Hospital volunteers are important members of the patients care
team and vital contributors to hospital success as members of the workforce. To the Board I would
bring my skills of organizational development, attention to detail, visionary and outside the box
thinking. I constantly absorb and analyze information that can be put into practice and action to get
things done and stretch the thinking of others. My program capitalizes on the skills of 900+
volunteers, 24/7, in over 100 different assignments. I also manage the highest volume producing
SHIIP Office in the state, proposed and consulted on the development of a new volunteer program
for the largest for-profit clinic in Iowa, and have overseen the development of a one-of-a-kind
Coalition into a fully functioning non-profit that designs and builds wheelchair ramps for those in
need using skilled volunteers. It would be an honor to serve as an AHVRP Board Member.

Title: Director, Volunteer Services
Employed by: Scottsdale Healthcare
City/State: Scottsdale, Ariz.
Why I am interested in serving on the AHVRP Board of
Directors:
With more than 20 years of experience in volunteer management, I
can honestly say that volunteers are my passion. Over the last decade I have had the pleasure of
serving as volunteer director for two major healthcare systems. Additionally, I have served as
president of the San Diego association for directors of volunteer services. In these roles I have seen
that volunteer managers and directors are uniquely positioned to assist our organizations in
navigating challenges. We represent many voices of the patient experience. As health care continues
to change at record pace, volunteer leaders must be nimble. We need to be ready to respond
strategically in support of our organizations. As we adjust to the transformation of healthcare, I
would be honored to help by supporting and advocating for AHVRP and volunteer management.

Title: Director Volunteer Service
Employed by: University Health System
City/State: San Antonio, Texas
Why I am interested in serving on the 2015 Committee on Nominations:
Volunteer Management is an industry full of incredible business potential. At times, the profession is
not taken seriously or seen as a "piece of cake." The reality is different. We manage multiple
personalities, handle operations for one or more offices, handle delicate situations with fairness, are
problem solvers, look for continuous process improvement, and implement ways to reduce risk. As
a life-long learner, I am committed to offering my knowledge and strive to identify the best
candidates for the board. Professionals need to continue to develop themselves for a better
tomorrow. I practice this motto as a doctoral student pursuing a degree in Organizational
Development. The best quality I bring to this position is the drive, determination and commitment
to quest the incredible journey of a volunteer manager.

Title: Director of Volunteer Services/Guest Services, Clinic Patient
Advocate
Employed by: Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center
City/State: Williamsburg , Va.
Why I am interested in serving on the 2015 Committee on
Nominations:
As the eldest daughter of 11 children (8 boys, 3 girls), I learned at an
early age the importance of teamwork, accountability, productivity and knowing your audience.
These are some of the most challenging times to be working in health care. Our organization has an
opportunity and an obligation to educate and empower our membership to be key leaders in striving
to improve the health of our communities. While we pride ourselves for delivering quality patientcentered care, we are challenged each day with focusing on reducing readmission rates and
increasing patient satisfaction scores. The delivery of care and settings have never been as diverse,
whether a rural clinic or urban teaching hospital, an urgent care or specialty hospital, a for-profit or
non-profit health system. It will be crucial for our Nominating Committee to strive to seek the best,
to encourage multi-skilled seasoned members, as well as identify new talent in the organization who
possess the leadership skills to appreciate diversity and help navigate AHVRP into the future. As a
former educator who furthered my studies in health care and became an RN, I learned early on the
value of networking and the value of learning from the best. I also learned the value of being
engaged in my profession and giving back. In turn I have had the opportunity as a leader to share
best practices and to mentor others. I joined AHVRP two years ago, achieved my CAVS, and was
welcomed onto the 2014 Conference Committee. I would welcome an opportunity to continue
being involved with AHVRP as a member of the Nominating Committee. I assure you I will do all I
can to help create a Board that will continue to attract the best in our profession to join AHVRP.

Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Employed by: Kadlec Regional Medical Center
City/State: Richland, Wash.
Why I am interested in serving on the 2015 Committee on
Nominations:
I have had extensive experience at the state level and am now looking to apply the skills acquired on
the national stage. I have been responsible for 500 volunteers at a mid-sized hospital for ten years
and, during that time, have seen the volunteer program evolve into an integral part of the hospital
workforce. As a designated Planetree hospital, the culture encourages volunteers to use their time
and talents for the good of everyone who enters the facility and this is something that I know I can
help others to achieve. I hold the Washington State University's certificate from their Volunteer
Management Institute and an MBA, and feel that I have the necessary training and skill set to
encourage other DVSes to grow and develop their own programs. I have spent the last two years as
President of my state association and so have attended Chapter meetings of AHVRP regularly. As
Immediate Past President I no longer attend Chapter meetings and so I am looking for a role within
AHVRP so that I can continue my association with this great organization.
