The
Chairman’s Report
CLC Report
This past month, two of our members received the
Presidential Award for volunteerism. Yes, that President, Barack Obama. Paulette Jacobsen, Director of
the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), made
the presentation at a special event on May 7, 2014.
Our new Snohomish County Sheriff, Ty Trenary, was
the featured speaker at this event. Please see the photos elsewhere in this newsletter.
Saturday, May 17th was Paine Field’s Annual General Aviation Day. All morning, the weather was
rather dreary, with a slight mist. The sun did poke out
later in the day. As in the past, this is the event where
we try to recruit new members to join the Bluebills.
Despite the morning gloom, a few people did come
by, and signed up. Again we emphasized that there
are no requirements for signing up (dues, assignments,
etc.). In return, we provide a list of volunteer opportunities, and ask that they record their activity and hours
volunteered, and pass it on to be included in our totals.
Bottom line, we did acquire a few signups. A special
thanks to Alan Gale, Wes Nielsen, Stan Shipley, Bill
Witzke, and all others who lent a hand.
The staff at Housing Hope is getting ready for their
annual fundraising auction in June. The organization
has purchased a small playhouse kit from one of the
local “big box” stores, and asked us to assemble it and
then deliver it to the auction site. Dave Skinner and
Stan Shipley are spearheading this effort. I hope a
couple of other Bluebills will help out on this project.
Contact Dave at 425-353-4840.
Last month, I indicated that the City of Snohomish
Garden Club has included my garden in their annual
garden tour this year. The date for this is July 13th.
Mark your calendars.
Oly-Pen reported that they sent a crew of eight to
frame a 20x20x9 foot building for W-Bar-C Ranch
on Whidbey Island. As you recall, this is a ranch
where handicapped children can experience a 'western
experience', including riding horses and dressing up in
western gear. Actually, 40 Boeing people volunteered (both retired and active employees) to perform
various tasks. Volunteer opportunities at W-Bar-C
Ranch were first brought to the Bluebills’ attention by
Merv Shetler.
Heritage had a good speaker at their last meeting. The topic was "Growing Up Boeing," a history
of Boeing test pilots and their families during the jet
age. Many at CLC were already familiar with the subject. There is a excellent book under the same name.
Sno-King reported that two of our members received
the President’s Award for 4000+ hrs of volunteer
work: Alan Gale and Wes Nielsen. This special
event was held at the Medallion Hotel, just off
Smokey Point Boulevard, and was sponsored by the
RSVP. Earlier at another event, Rose Johnson received the Washington State Governor’s Award in
Olympia. Congratulations to you all!

Sew long,
Bob was recently contacted by Wil Shellenberger,
President of the PBY - Naval Air Museum, located in
Oak Harbor, requesting volunteer assistance in performing maintenance checks and some minor repairs
to the PBY-6A Catalina owned by Mr Bud Rude, and
based in Arlington WA. This aircraft has been selected by the Seattle Seafair Airshow to be included in
this year’s show, and the maintenance and repairs are
needed in order to complete its annual FAA certification. The lead maintenance tech for the aircraft is
Craig Haws, and he can be reached by phone at 253509-2048 or via email at [email protected]. Or Wil
can be reached at 425-508-3055.
Interested members can either contact the above
people, or Bob Krull for further details.

Annual Picnic
Come one, come all, to Kasch Park on Thursday,
August 28, from noon until 5:00. The menu items will
be hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, barbeque
chicken, plus one or two chef surprises that you will
enjoy and will tickle your palate.
There will be a deviled egg contest (Can anyone
outdo Vivian?). How about a chili cookoff? Or a
clam chowder cookoff? Or both? Dust off your favorite recipes and let’s have a real contest.
On the lighter side, let’s have an Ugly Sweater contest. This relates to the garment, not the person wearing it. So, it’s time to purge the closet and come up
with a winner!
Let your wishes be known, either in person at the
general meeting, or by a phone call to me at 425-3534840. I appreciate your interest and your responses.
To allow for long-term planning, here are suggestions for our picnic, based on the first initial of your
last name:
A to H - Salads
I to P - Desserts / snacks
Q to Z - Casseroles
Seating is limited so please bring chairs (probably
more comfortable anyway).

Aviation Day, May 17, 2014
Sno-King Bluebills were at Aviation Day at Paine Field in May. Thanks to Bill Witzke for organizing our participation again this year. We had a booth manned throughout the day by Bill and Chris Witzke, Bob Krull, Wes
Nielsen, and Stan Shipley. Alan Gale, a docent at the Flying Heritage Collection (FHC), volunteered at that location all day. The flyover of WWII war birds and the FHC exhibits were awesome. We signed up a few potential
Bluebills and were visited by many kids who loved the glider kits provided by Alan Gale. If you have never been
to Aviation Day check it out next year!

Volunteer Corner - Jean Furulie
The Bluebills crew at the Everett Public School - Science Resource Center has another faithful volunteer, Jean Furulie. She has
been a member of Bluebills for approximately 18 years and started
helping at SRC last autumn.
Jean has lived and worked in the Everett area for many years, and
volunteered for many activities over that time. Some examples are:
den mother, 4-H, the library at Jackson Elementary and the Martha
Lake Guild for Seattle Children's Hospital.
Jean is pictured with some beautifully colored 'hand-crocheted'
bookmarks made by her daughter-in-law, Barbara Whetstine. The
bookmarks are sold as a fundraiser for the Children's Hospital.
By the way, Barbara is a Boeing employee, a computer programmer at the Everett plant. Hopefully, she may be become a future
Sno-King Bluebill's member.
